Report to Trustees

In Your Shoes 2024/2025

Prepared by: Marie Philpott Date: 6 October 2025

## Community Pressures and Rising Demand

Throughout the 2024/2025 reporting period, our community has continued to face escalating challenges driven by the rising cost of living, particularly in the areas of food and energy. These pressures have led to a 15% increase in the number of families and individuals seeking our support. In response, we have expanded our provision of food, emergency energy top-ups, clothing, school uniforms, household essentials, sanitary and personal hygiene products.

Support for families with young babies has also grown significantly. We are now supplying more baby food, nappies, cots, prams, and toys than ever before—reflecting both the depth of need and our commitment to meeting it.

Unmanageable debt has emerged as a deeply concerning issue among the families and residents we serve. Many are facing financial instability that affects not only their ability to manage arrears but also their access to basic necessities. We have been able to assist by referring individuals to trusted partners such as StepChange and CVS for specialist debt advice, while continuing to ensure they have enough food to eat and appropriate clothing for the weather.

In parallel, we have seen a marked increase in women and girls turning to us as their first point of contact for support with domestic abuse. Many arrive in crisis, and we have provided immediate emotional and practical assistance while facilitating referrals to specialist agencies. This rise underscores both the trust placed in our service and the urgent need for accessible, frontline intervention.

We also continue to support elderly residents and those affected by drug, alcohol, and gambling addictions. Our team provides compassionate, practical assistance alongside supported referrals to specialist services. This includes emotional support, guidance, and help accessing essential resources —ensuring that vulnerable individuals are not left to navigate these challenges alone.

## Community Safety and Crime Trends

Unlike previous years, it is a relief to report that violent organised gang activity on the estate has significantly decreased. This improvement is largely due to the detention of key gang leaders and members, which has disrupted local networks and reduced coordinated criminal behaviour.

While we continue to witness incidents of stabbings and physical assaults, it is encouraging to note that gun-related crime appears to have been resolved for the time being. This shift has brought a measure of reassurance to residents, though the persistence of other forms of violence reminds us that sustained vigilance and community support remain essential.

## Building Hope Through Learning

On a more positive note, we are pleased to report a significant increase in attendance across our training courses and qualification programmes. This growth reflects a renewed sense of hope among adults in our community, many of whom are seeking to rebuild their confidence, self-worth, and future prospects. These opportunities are not only equipping individuals with valuable skills but also fostering resilience and empowerment during a time of widespread uncertainty.
