Isla Rose Foundation – Yearly Update (2025)
Making a Difference Together
We’re proud to share the Isla Rose Foundation’s progress and achievements this year. Thanks to the generosity and support we’ve received, we’ve continued to make a meaningful impact on children and families affected by Non-Ketotic Hyperglycinemia (NKH).
Key Achievements in 2025
-
Funding Research – This year, we are contributing £1,000 directly to the ongoing NKH research programme at UCL London, bringing us closer to vital breakthroughs in treatment.
-
Supporting Families – We’ve supported other families by passing on equipment previously fundraised for, ensuring it continues to make a difference where it’s most needed.
-
Growing Awareness – Our story reached more people than ever before, with social media campaigns expanding our reach and helping to raise awareness of NKH worldwide.
Fundraising Success
Despite ongoing financial challenges, the response from our community has been incredible. From charity pots in local businesses to mountain climbing challenges to online campaigns, and through the powerful reach of social media, we’ve raised crucial funds to continue driving research and family support.
Social media has been a real win in 2025, allowing us to connect with thousands worldwide, share Isla’s journey, and inspire action.
This year, Isla’s story was featured by the Smile Charity. Her therapy journey and determination were so inspiring that she was nominated for the Smile Awards. While we didn’t win, the nomination alone was an incredible honour.
We’re also proud to share that Isla received the Sefton Child of Courage Award—a moment of huge pride that also helped boost awareness of our charity and its mission.
Research Progress: Hope Through Gene Therapy
Exciting strides are being made in gene therapy research for NKH. Studies using mouse models continue to show promising results, including:
-
Restoring Enzyme Activity – Introducing healthy genes to correct the metabolic fault in NKH.
-
Reducing Glycine Levels – Significant improvements in managing the toxic buildup that causes severe symptoms.
-
• Improved Neurological Outcomes – Early intervention, including potential in-utero treatment, offers the hope of preventing devastating neurological complications.

Trustees Report
Although still in pre-clinical stages, this research represents real hope for families—bringing us closer to treatment that could transform lives.
Looking Ahead: Our 5-Year Vision
The Isla Rose Foundation remains committed to:
-
Finding a Cure – Continuing to fund and support NKH research at UCL and beyond.
-
Empowering Families – Providing grants for therapy, equipment, and essential support not available through the NHS.
-
Building Sustainable Funding – Exploring new fundraising streams such as a local pop-up charity shop, equipment rental schemes, and expanding our online presence.
Our Values
Collaboration, compassion, and commitment are at the heart of everything we do. We are proud to operate as a non-profit with no expenses charged, relying on a dedicated mum, volunteer team, and a fantastic community willing to help us maximise our impact.
Financial Stewardship
Our accounts continue to be independently managed by volunteer accountants, ensuring transparency and sustainability. Our trustees meet quarterly to review progress and strategically guide the foundation.
Thank You
Every achievement this year has been made possible by our supporters, fundraisers, and community. Together, we are giving hope, raising awareness, and moving closer to a cure for NKH.

Isla Rose Foundation
For the year ended 31 January 2025
Independent Examiner's Report to the trustees of the Isla Rose Foundation
We report on the accounts of the Charity for the year ended 31 January 2025, which are set out on pages 7 and 8.
Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity's trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act) and that an independent examination is needed.
It is our responsibility to:
• examine the accounts under section 145 of the 2011 Act;
• to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act; and
• to state whether particular matters have come to our attention.
Basis of independent examiner's report
Our examination was carried out in accordance with the general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from you as trustees concerning such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts give a 'true and fair view' and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
Independent examiner's statement
In connection with our examination, no matter has come to our attention:
-
which gives us reasonable cause to believe that in any material respect the requirements to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 Act; and to prepare accounts with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the 2011 Act have not been met; or
-
to which, in our opinion, attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
