The Beacon Shed
W6 opened the Beacon Shed in May 2023 and it was the firgt dernentia-frieDdly Comm￿ltY shed in the UK, aiablSDg

welcoming envirOn￿ell(. Our aitn was to work with particip8ats to find out what they enjoy and help tbem to maintain &
onnection to things they love.

complete the renovation togetlLer. The chair was then placed at the East LAncashire Railway for the Brithiti in Blooln

WE opened the Beacon Shed during the first Rossendale Pride es'ertL beld at The Wbitsker Museum and Art Gallery,
and organised by Sptxtrnm Incl￿810￿. Thts provided an opportimity for people visiting the event to come attd get
Inforn￿tiOn about dementia and fmd out about our Servi￿.
The first year implenLenting this new model of we at the Beacon Shd has been a rich learning experience. We have
conwlted reguLarly with participants and their families, have learned about th¢ activities each of our participants enjoy
and bave be6n able to taiLor our pmgramme to meet their needs. Il'e know that family ¢Arers hai'e mel each other
through tbe B&acott Shed and that these supportive reiauonships bav¢ grown and tbrived and carers have helped e2ch
other navigate the Gballenges faced by families affe£ted by thmeati&
We have received lots of feedback about tbe Be&con Sbe& which helps us to evaluate the I￿paCt ofour work to
shape future seTr'ices.'

Carers, Group
Our Dementia Carers, Group is a peer sUp￿rt group wlll.ch brintsJ family Carers of people livillg with demrntia
together to meei others in a similar SiLuation and enables thellL to act￿S infonnation 8JLd otTer support to each other.
These faGE to faGE sessxons Tan until July 2024. and some sessions illcluded a speaker to proNide advice on issue8 such

Th¢ faK-to-faGe ￿e¢litLg5 ran alongslde the Beacon Actiiryty group. and this facilitated attendance at tbe care￿ Group,
as Carers w¢re able to bring their loved ones along to participate in social time and &ctiviti& with others.
Our 'virtual' Carers, Group continued to Jllonthlv online throughout tbe vear. Carers often r￿d it difficult to attend
fa￿t0-face meetings because of their carillg r¢8ponstbilttics, so the virtual group proved beneficial for earers attd
for c￿erS who live fillther away.

tn DeGCtnber 2Q24, we were success￿1 in obtaining a gr8ttt fronL one of our local County Counciilor3, which will
provide fLmding to run fvrther carcr wellbeing segsions itito the next financia] year.
Durillg thi5 yeax. we bave put in pla￿ welfare ￿]15 to the fanLily earers who ac£e&g our service8. This ¢nables us to
ch¢ck that they are not feeling overwhelmed with their ¢8ring role, proTride signposting to other local services aad build
a trusted relationskn"p with them. These ca]Is have Ixen vy much ¥pprecikted by earers a]Ld are now a key part of the
8UPPOrt we provide.
Dementia-Friertdly ActI￿ty Group
We raD our rnollthly dementia-friendly activity group at The Whitaker up to July 2024. This gro￿ provided a safe
space for people livitig dementia to take part iti a rJJ)ge of a¢ri&ities and to socialise. PartiGipanLg aiiended either
dependentlj., or with ttLeir c&rer8. alld Carers were able ￿ at*nd their own support group, which rdtt alongside th¢8e
sessions.

Bowland. The Earn is home to the Wood End Alpac&s. We Twk a group of our pgrticipattis alld family carers to the
farm and Elljoyed pattitits pigs. grooming a wny. IIM)king ai shw ond strokillg the wonderfd alpacas. The farn
wheelchair acC￿lbIe wkn"¢h opened the visit up to sonje of our less mobil¢ participallts. Wc kLad a wonderful
afternoon, enjoyillg the different sensory activities and learning about alpa¢a8 aDd their wool. The Msit finished with a
delicious afternoon tea. Vlsits ]ike these are so imw)rtant in enabling faEuiiies affected bv dem¢ntia to access
experienc£s together that they might otherwise not be able to, and they also help to create wxiou5 ￿E￿orieS.
Wellbeing Group
Our n¥0 wEekiy wellbeing gTOW Continued to run throughout the ye8r. These social groups bring peopl¢ together to
knit and crochet in a fiiendly environment. The ben¢fiis on personal wcllbeing from knitting alld crocheting are widely
knovm and tlLese groups GotttttiUE to attract regular and tM¥ members.
The group have undertaken S£￿traI projecL8 within the year. which knave benefited otheT8. They worked with a local
chariry Veter8n8 ia Communities to Ttuke p(VPiG8 to colltnthule to a displav commemorating D-D)y ill Fr￿ce. They
also continuwJ to knit bais for neWbOn￿ for tbe Royal Oldkn Hospitsl Wam) Baby Scheme. where every newq)om
baby ig given a hand-knitted hat. The group a]so knitted bereavemellt hearts to give to famili￿ 8t both Rossettdale and
Pcndleside Hospice4 which both ac¢eptpatients froryk Rosselldale.

Beacon at Home
Following our pilot delivering the Beacon at Hom¢ sm'ice, kitidlv futsded by tbe NHS Lancasbire and South Cumbria
Integraicd Care Boarl we evaluaied the Beacon at Home service. This serviee aims to build a tn￿ling Telationship
through pro￿￿ding a series of one-twne se￿10n5, delivered in the parti¢ipallt$ home. These sessio1￿ are stNctured and
¢ailor¢d to each itidividual's interests and oi'er time, and aim ty build r0PPOrt iticrease wellbeing. Activiues are
tailored to Each in(lividual's preferen￿8 and needs.
Our evaluation sh(Trwed tlLat participants alld their carer8 iynefitted from this service and that trusting relationships wer¢
ade, so that family carers felt cornfortable and safe in leaving their loved one with our Beacon team member,
Parti¢ipants were able to receive care from a dedicated member. which assisted with CQD5iStenGy and helped
partiiipants to feel cornfortable. Feedback included..

We dtlivertd the tbird Rossendale Dementia lJrfornMtion event in September 2024, thoosing to rull this in Ba¢up-
ditTerent part of the BorouEIL This has become all aonua] event which brings deraentia serrice5 and community
groups together in otke place to enable fanll]ies to access the inforniation they need more easily. The event was again
w¢ll-supportEd by a wide rdDge of statutory and n0n.sla￿￿ry seTrices and Coromullity orgallisations. The eveni was
supported by an extended visit b> the Worshipful Mayor of Rossendale. and there was rnusicai entertain￿Etst which was
sponsored through a Local M¢mber Gr￿1 from Counry Coullcillor Samarn Bames.
Visitors expressed that it w&s great to have all ibe services under one roo£ as li was often dit5cult to access.
Stallholders also valued the opporh￿Ity to n¢twork and l¢am alx)ut the range of services ayaijable to people IivinE with
de￿EntIa attd their familie8.
Volunteering
We have retatned our voluuteers atLd iThcreased the number of Volunt￿ the year. We celebrated Volunteer's
Week to express our Eiatitude for the time and skills they give freely ￿ the ¢hority. We are extrellLcly grate￿1 to all our
voluot¢ers for their consEstent work for our beneficiaries.
Fulldralslng Grant
(lur main aim for grant funding and fundraising this year was to enable us to continue to provide and develop our
s¢rvices for fa￿llieS atTected by dementla across Rossendale and East Lall¢&thire. We were forttmate to have rec¢ived
subslalltial donations d￿Illg 2023 from Mr John and Mrs Yi'oDne Malley, to gtAff the Beacon Shed for two yew. Our
f(Ku$ during the year bcen to look for*ard to raising grant fundtng to he]p witb stAffmg the Beacon Shed aud our
servifjes, aud at the end of the fiDallGial year, we *ere awaiiing a decision on a grant fro￿ the National Lottery
Reaching Lommullities Progra￿￿e, to support this alld to c(ea(e three demcntia infonDation hubs.

area at the rear ofThe Ivbitaker, and to impr(Trve the security of the gate5 to the area. Wod( was completed to in8ts11 ail

We were succe&9fid ill Obtaillll￿ a grallt from the ASDA Foundatii)n to help to create the Beacon Garden which borders
the Beacon Shed. This will provide an atea ￿'bI£￿ will not onty be lov¢ly to look at, but will include sensory plants and
a s¢ating area for our beneficiaries to enjoy. It will also wn¢ribut¢ to improving this area of ÉlLe grounds of The
IlThitaker Muy6Lllll alld An Gallery. Ai the end of the year. w¢ a]so rtteiNed the llew8 that we had secured a further
Sraut the Tesco Stronger Gampaign io proNide fimher fvnding to create the Beacon G￿d¢ll. One of our
