Thanks to a kind donation from Mr Jolm Malley and Mrs Yvonne Malley in tlic prcviou5 financial year, we were able to engagc a contractor to ruli the Slied for No days a week, aloiigiside volunteers. The 'Head Slieddie, pioject will enable this st3ffJng for thc first two yeais operation of the Beacon Shed. and our Head Sh¢ddie joined us in April 2023 to OSSlSt in fjllisliing tlie fit-out and planning activiti¢s for the Beacon Slied. The opcning day of the Beacon Shed was a joythl cclcbration, witl) the Mayor of Rosseiidale in attendance, togctlicr with oiir local cominuiiity radio station Rossendal¢ Radio,. representatives froin our hosts at The Whitaker,. Rossendale Leisure Trust. Ros5endale Borough Council., Rosscndalc NHS Social Prescribing Team. ajid representalives frlim the many charity ai)d coinmiinity partners we work with. C¢iitral to our celebrations was the ribbon cutting by one of our bcn¢fi¢iaries and a Carei, who officially opened this unique facility. The Bcacoll Shed is tl)e first dementia-friendly community shed in the UK, which enables people living wilh dementia to work alot]gside people witl)oul these challenges, pursuing tlieir intere5t5 a safe and ivclcotning environment. We work with participants to find out what they enjoy and help tlieni to maintain a connection to things they love. Throiighout tlie year, participants have been able lo experience activities which mean something 10 Ihem. without feeling jiidged or excluded, and io feel support¢d and valued. They liave worked alongsidc our volullieers to create a widc range of items. Activities have included woodwork, paintlllg, gaTdenÈngF. making and r¢storing items: music and singing,. and a wide variety of craft projects. Carer5' Group Our Dementia Carers, Group continued to run twice monthly, with both face-to-fac¢ meetings and virtual online Eneetings. This peer support group brings family CaTer5 of people living with dementia together to meet others in a sitnilar sittiation and enables them to acc¢5s infomiation and support each otl)er. The prograinnie of speakers this year cov¢rcd topics iiicluding financial considerations. coping strategies to avoid str¢ss' navigatin¥ the benefits system. supporting our own wellbein¥", and Tnaking dccisions. Carcrs also came up with h¢lpfiil tips, whicli have been shared tIOugh our newsletter. We rec¢ivcd iiominaiions from all ov¢r Rossendale and distributed twenty wellbeiiig boxes to Carers, which were very much appreciated. We received funding from the Community Foundation for LRncashire Red Rosc Rcsponding Fiind which has enablcd lls to start to tun some wellbeing sessions specifically for Carers. These will continue during thc iiext fiiiancial year. Dementia-Friendly Activltv Group We Colltinucd to run OUT inonihly dementia-friendly activity group at The Whiiaker throughout the year. The group provid¢s a safe 5Pclce for people living with dementia to tak¢ part in a range of activiiies and th¢y can attend with a Carer or independently. Activiti¢s this year have included celebrating the coronation of our new King; games,. crafting,. decorating Easter biscuits,. a beetle drive and afternoon lea; painting: music ld singing: watching a play,. and g¢nil¢ exerc15e to music. Activiti¢s have provided our beneficiaries wilh meaningful activity and opportunities to build new so¢ial connections. Funding fro the NHS Laneashire and South Cumbria Integrated Care Board enabl¢d us to pilot a new d¢mcntia-friei)dly activity group in a different part of Rosseiidale to iinpiove access for more beiieficiaries. These SC5sions were well received. particularly as people living with dementia and tlieir Carers werc able to attend iogeiher. W¢ provided a range of activities. which the beneficiaries hclped to cl)oose. Including making wind cliimes. pomanders and hedgehogs,. plantIng 5eeds,' decorating plant pots and watching a play. Feedback from beneficiaries included 'Thank you, it'5 been lovely to gei out of the housc and do somcthillg diffeTent and nieet and talk to new people.. We were fortunate to be invited to Norihwood Farm in Higham by Sandra from the Forest of Bowland. for our first Beacon trip. Oiir beneficiaries and volunteers were treated to a wonderful afternoon fill¢d with sensory aciiviiies, such as stroking sheep and donkeys and crafting with raw sheep's wool. We saw calves and tried the milking simulator and tile lambing sitnulator. We had a wonderful time. and thc visit really benefiited evcryone's wellbeing. It was an afteiiiooii filled with fun, laughter. fresh air, tea, cake, and great company, which h¢lped to create some wonderful meniories. Wellbeing Group Our re¥?iilar wellbeing group'Knits at Fitz, continued to ruli throughout the year. This w¢ckly social group brings people io¥eiher 10 knii and crochet in a friendly group, which positively benefits their mental h¢altli and wellbeing. The group Iiave undertaken several projects within the y¢ar, including yarn bombing in a local park to celebrate the King's coroi)ation and working with Rossendale Civic Pride to design and produce crocheted flower panels for their entry inio Britain in Blotsin. The b¥roup also knitted teddy bears for fost¢r childrcn atid continued 10 siipport knitted hats for newboms - kniited hats were inade and sent io rhe Royal Oldham Hospital for use by fainilies with premawre neivborns. A sccoiid wellbeing crafting group was formed in year and this has met at ihe Beacon Slicd. a coffee shop and in the cominiinity roorn al a local superniarkel. The bcn¢fi¢iaries comt together socially to craft aiid enjoy each oiher's company, with the impact being increased social conn¢ctions and a greater feeling of wellbeing. Beaeon at Home The family CareTS we support told us that tIi¢y stnigglc to gct time to themseliwes and ivould like niore support al horne that was not'care.. Tiianks 10 funding from th¢ NHS Laiicashire and Souih Cunibria Integrated Care Board, we began to pilot a home-based servicc - B¢acon at Homc. Tliis scrvice aiins io build a tNsting relationship tlirougl) providing a series of one-to-onc sessions, delivered in th¢ participaiit's home. These sessions are structured and tailored io each individual's pref¢ren¢es and needs. Thc service bebFan in the final quartcr of the year and will be evaluated early into tli¢ new Iinancial year. Our bcneficiaiies repeat¢dly told us tliat when famili¢5 suspect a lovcd tsiie Ès living with dementia, or are newly diagnosed, thcy often find it difficult to ¢asily obtain infomation alld find out about staNtory and communtiy services to help them. The event was designed to be a 'One Slop Shop, where people living witli deinentia and thcir Carers and families Could acce5S the inforniation thcy needcd in one place. We invited a range of stiltutory servi¢cs, community groups aiid s¢rvice providers io hav¢ information stalls ai tlie event. and this ¢nabled families to com¢ to oi)e place to obtain th¢ infortnation they needed. Local businesses generously coiitribuied prizes for a free rafflc for visltors to the event. We also atTanged wellbeing activitie5, such as halid niassagc, a Tai Chi taster session, crafting and singing so thai families could attend iogether atyi tak¢ part in these activities tog¢thcr. Fecdback froin visitors was positivc, with several ¢otnmeniing that they had found oui about new activities, or were now it] touch with organisaliot]s who could help them. Volunteering We havc increased our numb¢r of volunteer5 during the year and haye partnered wilh Thc WhitakeT to access their volunteer Tegistration and rcivards system. A5 a vtslunteer-lead charity, our volunieers ar¢ key to the successful dcvclopment and sustainability of our cliarity. We ale extreinely grateful to all oui volunteers for their consistent work for our beneficiarics. Furtdraising and Grant5 Our tnain aim foT grant funding and fvndraising this year was to support the work at thc B¢acon Shed, niaintain our ¢X15ting setviees, and Cnhance these iii line with the wishes of our benefjciaries. Sotne of the grants received haire been mentioned above, but w¢ were a150 foilunaie io Teccivc fuiiding from The Ducliy of Lancaster to create a patio area at the side of the Beacon Shed, garden furnirure and plants. seeds. and compost for gardening activities. Our wellbeiiig groups also received a donation to support materials for their yarnbombing io celebrate the King's Coronation. We were deliglitcd to Iiave been chosen as one of thc Mayor of Rossendale's nominatcd chaiities for the 2023-24 Mayoral year and have taken part in several of the Mayols fundraising events lo support all th¢ noininated charitics. A donation to support two further contractors for two years to help in the running of ¢xistiii¥ serYi¢es and the development of services to siipport dementia Carers was received froin Mr Jolin and Mrs Yvonne Malley. The 'Mallcy Cotnmuiiity Project, has ¢Jiablcd work to 5tait within year and will progress tliroughout the next financial year. Following a theft from our storage shed, we received scvcral kind donations of gardening too15 and money from supporters, local community groups and a local church. Thesc wer¢ v¢ry gratefully received and enabled us to replace everything thai was stolell. Our Hcad Sheddie, Mr Phil Speddy, Iindeitook a walking challcng¢ around the front of The Whitaker Mu5euin and Art Gallery io rais¢ funds for an ali conditioning unit for the Shed. Another siipporter. Mr Elliott Crooke5 undertook a walk from his honic in Cumbria to the Slied to raise funds for our cliariry. Tliis involved wild cainpiiig, blisters, and a nasty lior5efly bi. but liis challenge was completed successfully. Wc v¢ry tnuch appreciat¢d these ndraiS]llg challenges and tlie funds Ilicy raised. We have built and installed planters at tl)e front of the museum to protect their rorecourt at]d look foVard to contlllUlllbF thi5 productive working relationship. Families of people livEng with dementia have told us that they strugglc to access information easily and in one place. We ivill delivei the fourth Rossendale Dementia Information Event, in response to the necds of our beneficiaries, and aim to reach additional people and families who are encountering the cliallenges dementia brings, through utilising a 'pop up, model. We plan to continue 10 contribute aciively to the Rosselldal¢ Connected movem¢nt alld will also work with VCFS groups and 5tatiitory services to increase collaboration betwe¢ll those proTriding dem¢ntia services. Our volunteers are al the heart of our organisati0i1, and w¢ will aim to recruit morc voluntecrs to help deliver our services alld support C)ur beiieficiaries.
