## **Report of Trustees for the year ended 31 March 2026**

Respeito Ltd is a registered charity, a company limited by guarantee working towards preventing and reducing domestic abuse in the Portuguese-speaking community in the UK, (though not excluding non-residents). Respeito’s work is guided by the principles of Equality, Human Rights and Social Integration.

Our vision is to empower and support Portuguese-speaking families and individuals in the UK to build safer and happier lives. Our mission is to reduce and prevent domestic abuse in the Portuguese-speaking community in the UK.

Respeito is dedicated to reducing domestic abuse and supporting vulnerable families in the Portuguese speaking community in the UK. We raise awareness of the negative impact of domestic abuse and we provide training, support and information to empower people to become agents of change within their households and communities. Our service users are Portuguese speakers from Portugal, including mainland and islands, from Brazil, and the African Portuguese-speaking countries. In Greater London, we provide empathetic, one-to-one person-centred, holistic packages of support. Our service is confidential, including interpreting and translation and provision of information in Portuguese, free of charge for all Respeito’s beneficiaries.

Trustees, who are also directors of the company, oversee the charity's work. They meet four times a year to consider and agree strategic plans and review activities. The day-to-day activities of the Charity are carried out by two executive directors, working part-time.

## **Review of Activities**

## **1. Client Support Service**

During the year, Respeito continued to provide culturally and linguistically appropriate one-to-one support to Portuguese-speaking survivors of domestic abuse across London. Support included advocacy, safeguarding, housing and welfare benefits, financial and debt-related support, practical assistance, interpretation, accompaniment, emotional support and coordination with statutory and specialist services.

At the beginning of the financial year, 51 cases were active and a further 47 new cases were recorded, bringing the overall number of beneficiaries supported to 98. The year continued to demonstrate immigrant survivors' needs, particularly around housing insecurity, welfare benefits, debt and financial hardship, immigration status and NRPF (No Recourse to Public Funds), language barriers and social isolation.

## **2. Counselling Services**

Trauma-informed counselling in Portuguese continued as an important part of Respeito’s holistic recovery support. During the year, 25 counselling referrals were accepted and 184 counselling sessions were delivered, with each full programme consisting of eight 50-minute sessions. Counselling provided survivors with culturally and linguistically appropriate therapeutic support to improve emotional wellbeing, resilience and recovery from domestic abuse.

## **3. LCF MOPAC VAWG Grassroots Fund - Round 2**

The MOPAC VAWG Grassroots Fund - Round 2 continued to strengthen Respeito’s capacity to provide specialist Portuguese-language support to survivors across London. During 2025, 32 new survivors entered the service, bringing the total supported since the programme began to 79 survivors, significantly exceeding the original two-year target of 56.

The funding supported frontline casework, counselling, clinical supervision and management capacity, while strengthening coordination with specialist services and partners. Reported outcomes included improvements in survivors’ wellbeing, resilience, economic independence, safety and ability to cope with everyday life and make informed decisions.

## **4. Walcot Foundation – Safe Lambeth Households**

Through the Walcot Foundation-funded A Safe Domestic Environment for Portuguese-speaking Families in Lambeth project, Respeito continued to provide specialist welfare and financial resilience support to Portuguese-speaking Lambeth residents. During the reporting period, 32 clients were supported, including 15 new cases, with support covering welfare benefits, housing, Council Tax, debt, employment, financial hardship and practical advocacy.

Community outreach remained an important part of the project, reaching 127 participants during 2025, exceeding the annual target of 80. The project also distributed a further 150 copies of the Safe Lambeth Households Portuguese-language leaflet, complemented by growing use of Respeito’s online Community Guide and Directory.

## **5. Lloyds Bank Foundation – Organisational Development**

Alongside grant unrestricted funding, Respeito benefited from strategic development support through the Lloyds Bank Foundation’s Enhanced Programme, including specialist consultancy supporting the development of our business plan, organisational development and longer-term sustainability.

Respeito was also selected to participate in the Lloyds Bank Foundation Trading & Enterprise Learning Programme 2025, delivered by the School for Social Entrepreneurs (SSE), from October 2025 to March 2026. The programme has supported Respeito to strengthen its approach to financial sustainability and explore trading and earned-income opportunities through practical learning, peer support and development of business and entrepreneurial skills. This learning is informing our approach to income diversification and reducing long-term reliance on grant funding.

## **6. Radically Reimagine Funding Project – Impact on Urban Health**

Respeito continued its active involvement in the Radically Reimagining Funding Project. Building on the foundations established in the previous year, the project progressed its work to develop a more equitable and community-led approach to funding, ensuring that black and racially minoritised grassroots organisations and communities have a stronger role in funding decisions.

During the year, the partnership broadened engagement with community investors, including the Walcot Foundation and Tudor Trust, and continued developing the model and relationships required for implementation. The project is currently mapping community partner organisations as part of the next stage of development, with implementation expected to progress during the next financial year.

Respeito’s annual UNID@S initiative highlighted the importance of men’s allyship and accountability in ending violence against women. The event brought together community members and representatives from Lambeth Council, the Metropolitan Police, Future Men and the Portuguese and Brazilian Consulates for dialogue on gender roles, prevention and positive change.

Together, these awareness/preventative activities directly engaged 187 participants during the year.

## **8. Major Organisational Developments**

March 2026 marked an important organisational transition for Respeito following the retirement of Co-Director Maria João Nogueira. Leadership responsibilities were consolidated within the existing team, with Juliana Rondon assuming overall organisational leadership and beginning a wider strategic review of Respeito’s organisational model, governance, financial sustainability, partnerships and future service direction.

Respeito also continued strengthening its position as a specialist by-and-for organisation supporting Portuguese-speaking survivors of domestic abuse and gender-based violence, with an increasing focus on partnership working, clearer referral pathways, organisational sustainability and the longterm development of its specialist recovery model.

## **1. Basis of Preparation**

## **1.1 Basis of Accounting**

These accounts have been prepared under the historical cost convention with items recognised at cost or transaction value unless otherwise stated in the relevant note(s) to these accounts.

The accounts have been prepared in accordance with Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2015) (Charities SORP) and the Companies Act 2006.

## **1.2 Going Concern**

These accounts have been prepared on the going concern basis.

## **1.3 Change in basis of accounting or to previous accounts**

There has been no change to the accounting policies (valuation rules and method of accounting) since last year and no changes have been made to accounts for previous years.

## **2. Accounting Policies**

## **Fund accounting**

**Unrestricted funds** : These are available for use at the discretion of the trustees in furtherance of the general objects of the charity.

**Designated funds** : These are unrestricted funds earmarked by the trustees for particular purposes.

**Restricted funds** : These are available for use subject to restrictions imposed by the donor or through terms of an appeal.

## **Income**

Recognition of income: Income is included in the Statement of Financial Activities (SoFA) when the charity becomes entitled to it, and virtually certain to receive, and the amount of the income can be measured with sufficient reliability.

## **Income with related expenditure**

Where income has related expenditure the income and related expenditure is reported gross in the Statement of Financial Activities (SoFA).

## **Donations and legacies**

Voluntary income received by way of grants, donations and gifts is included in the SoFA when receivable and only when the Charity has unconditional entitlement to the income.

## **Tax reclaims on donations and gifts (Gift aid** )

Income from tax reclaims is included in the SoFA at the same time as the gift/donation to which it relates.

## **Donated services and facilities**

Page **12** of **23**

These are only included in income (with an equivalent amount in expenditure) where the benefit to the Charity is reasonably quantifiable, measurable and material.

**Volunteers help** : The value of any volunteer help received is not included in the accounts.

**Investment income** : This is included in the accounts when receivable.

## **Expenditure**

## **Recognition of expenditure**

Expenditure is recognised on an accrual basis. Expenditure includes any Vat which cannot be fully recovered, and is reported as part of the expenditure to which it relates.

## **Expenditure on raising funds**

These comprise the costs associated with attracting voluntary income, fundraising, trading costs and investment management costs.

## **Expenditure on charitable activities**

These comprise the costs incurred by the Charity in the delivery of its activities and services in the furtherance of its objects, including the making of grants and governance costs.

## **Grant payable**

All grant expenditure is accounted for on an actual paid basis plus an accrual for grants that have been approved by the trustees at the end of the year but not yet paid.

## **Governance costs**

These include those costs associated with meeting the constitutional and statutory requirements of the Charity, including any audit/independent examination fees, costs linked to the strategic management of the Charity, together with a share of other administration costs.

## **Other expenditure**

These are support costs not allocated to a particular activity.

## **Taxation**

The charity is exempt from corporation tax on its charitable activities.

## **Tangible fixed assets and depreciation**

Depreciation is provided at the following annual rates in order to write off each asset over its estimated useful life:

Fixtures, fittings and equipment 25% Straight line

## **Freehold investment property**

Investment properties are measured initially at cost and subsequently at fair value at each balance sheet date and are not depreciated. All gains or losses are taken to the Statement of Financial Activities as they arise.

## **Stocks**

Page **13** of **23**

Stock is included at the lower of cost or net realisable value. Donated items of stock are recognised at fair value which is the amount the Charity would have been willing to pay for the items on the open market.

## **Trade and other debtors**

Trade and other debtors are recognised at the settlement amount due after any trade discount offered. Prepayments are valued at the amount prepaid net of any trade discounts due.

## **Cash and cash equivalents**

Cash and cash equivalents comprise cash at bank and on hand, demand deposits with banks and other short-term highly liquid investments with original maturities of three months or less and bank overdrafts. In the statement of financial position, bank overdrafts are shown within borrowings or current liabilities.

## **Trade and other creditors**

Short term creditors are measured at the transaction price. Other creditors and provisions are recognised where the Charity has a present obligation resulting from a past event that will probably result in the transfer of funds to a third party and the amount due to settle the obligation can be measured or estimated reliably. Creditors and provisions are normally recognised at their settlement amount after allowing for any trade discounts due.

## **Research and development**

Expenditure on research and development is written off in the year in which it is incurred.

## **Foreign currencies**

Monetary assets and liabilities denominated in currencies other than the functional currency of the Charity are translated at the rates of exchange prevailing at the end of the reporting period. Transactions in currencies other than the functional currency of the Charity are recorded at the rate of exchange on the date that the transaction occurred. All exchange differences are taken into account in arriving at net income/expenditure.

## **Leased assets**

Where the Charity enters into a lease which entails taking substantially all the risks and rewards of ownership of an asset, the lease is treated as a finance lease.

Leases which do not transfer substantially all the risks and rewards of ownership to the Charity are classified as operating leases.

Assets held under finance leases are initially recognised as assets of the charity at their fair value at the inception of the lease or, if lower, at the present value of the minimum lease payments. The corresponding liability to the lessor is included in the balance sheet date as a finance lease obligation. Lease payments are apportioned between finance expenses and reduction of the lease obligation so as to achieve a constant rate of interest on the remaining balance of the liability. Finance expenses are recognised immediately, unless they are directly attributable to qualifying assets, in which case they are capitalised in accordance with the charity's policy on borrowing costs. Assets held under finance leases are depreciated in the same way as owned assets. Operating lease payments are recognised as an expense on a straight-line basis over the lease term.

Page **14** of **23**

In the event that lease incentives are received to enter into operating leases, such incentives are recognised as a liability. The aggregate benefit of incentives is recognised as a reduction of rental expense on a straight-line basis.

## **Pension costs**

The charity operates a defined contribution plan for its employees. A defined contribution plan is a pension plan under which the company pays fixed contributions into a separate entity. Once the contributions have been paid the company has no further payments obligations. The contributions are recognised as expenses when they fall due. Amounts not paid are shown in accruals in the balance sheet. The assets of the plan are held separately from the company in independently administered funds.

## **Receipts of donated goods, facilities and services**

Donated goods, services and facilities are included in the SoFA when received at a value of the gift to the Charity provided the value of the gift can be measured reliably.

Donated services and facilities that are consumed immediately are recognised as income with an equivalent amount recognised as an expense under the appropriate heading in the SoFA.
