The Trust’s activities during the above period.
The main duty of the Trust is to repair and maintain the three weirs. The Trust’s very experienced Weirs’ Manager carries out this demanding work. We have the weirs professionally assessed every five years. As background all three weirs were inspected by Sanctus, a specialist environmental consultant and contractor, on Tuesday 11 August 2020 during a notably low flow conditions which allowed full access of the entire length of each weir. Their general comment was that:
“All three weirs continue to perform their original purpose well and will likely do so successfully for many years. Visual inspection however has highlighted a number of areas where attention, further consideration or maintenance may be required.”
We reported in last year’s report that a widening notch in the Mill Street Weir was repaired. This was done following the necessary environmental assessment of the appropriate materials to use. A further repair is planned for a section of the southern arm of the Horseshoe Weir. This will be a significant amount of work for which we have applied for an environmental permit from the Environment Agency. This repair will replace much reduced pointing to the stonework of the weir and so prevent any adverse effects of vegetation growth.
In our last report we noted that the Trust had employed Shropshire Archives to make an electronic copy of its minutes, reports and other documents so that there is a complete record of how the weirs came to be repaired. Since then, we have been presented with further documents which were of interest to the story of how the weirs were refurbished; these have been scanned and added to our records.
