2024 Review
In every con￿Nable important reste¢ DAF 2024 proved to be a tremendous success, vmth each and every
event being Well-￿ee1ved by our audiences, and srrbOOthty run by our volunteers. and everyone else involved.
While overall ticket sales could have been better. l am very pleased to report that the qualtty of the festival.
the caliber Of our guests, and the enthusiash"c responses from attend￿S were as g(K* as ever.
Lets look at a few Festival Highlights-
Comedian Lucy Porter was one of my highlights wrth a nwJht of fn"endty laughter and charming wrt.
Geneticist Adam Rutherford captivated the intellectualty curious with his detailed di%cussion on genetics, making
a complex subject accessible and engaging. ImpressFve coming trom an academ￿ at UCL, which is, leys
face it, the third ranked college in London. If you want to know where that comment Is ￿MIng from. you need lo
see the tnessage he vffote for me when he signed my copy of his b(x)k.
Doctor Phil Hamtnond, brought a unique blend of medicine. rustic rural Aussie recoltections. and highbrow
comedy- informative, educational. entertaining- he should be on the BBC.
Poet Hollie McNish was really an unexpected stsndout success. She sold out not once but tsVi￿. Her words
clearly resonated with the audience, and the feedback has ￿en oveTrthelmingty pOS￿"ve. She brought poetry
to life in a way that connected deeply with attendees. If onty we could get someone like her every year.
We were treated to a wonderfijl play atrrt)ut Kerrfs finest son. Tom Crean. which was 50 Well-r￿1ved we could
have sold it out tsvice over if we'd thought of it in b"me. Thi5 powerful pro(luth"on brought history to the stage.
leaving the audience in awe of Crean's incredible life story_
The Slambovian Circus of Dreams cio*Y the festival on a h￿h note. delNering what many have called "the best
gig of the year." When I say'fflanf, I heard at least people say that. and one ofthem wasny me. Anyone
who was there that night will testsfy- their ta'd-back energy and musical tslent vrds unforgettable.

On a personal note, and one I'm sure is shared with my co-chair. we were delighted with the performance
of our committee and co-volunteers. many of whom were doing tt all for the first tlme. You guys have not jusl our
thanks bul our admiration. Obviously there's no room for favourite5 bLrt rf I dKI have one. she'd be a demon
Welsh talent scout with a 100% strike rate yet again. So no pressure for next year.
Big thanks to lots of supporters who make it happen. lan,Stewie and ￿ at the town council. Jo and everyone at
Devizes Bcx)ks. Everyone connecled wtLh all the venues and s[￿SOr5, esFecialty the team at the Wharf Theatre.
Danny at Serenrty Audio. Thanks to Jackie Wiltshire for running Our Friends organisation once again. Thanks to
Colin who ran the numbers so well. shout out to Andy and Darren at Deviine and to Ida Moconnell for all our
design work.
And this year, unusually, we do have a couple of pantomime villains. The Gazette and Herald for running a front
page headline "Devizes Festival Cancelled" tsvo weeks before our fesbval started. You had to took in the small
print to see il was one of the DOCA events. Shame on you G&H.
However the villain of the year award undoubtedly g￿S to the Fun Pol￿ at WiKshire Council. They threatened
us with legal acb.on and outrageous fines rf we didnl dismande all our billboards. Talk about a buzzkilll Bul fear
no( for every villain, there's a superhero and our5 is called Mr George Batten. Tnjst me. you donl want lo cross
this guy. His keyboard has been classffied as a lethal weapon in seven slate5. Arm&1 wth nothing but wit,
sarcasm, the mighty r¢ghteous power of the law. a gcth gctsjle search and a keyboard that could level a county,
he saved the day. Hurrah for George.
So back to the serious stuff- just as last year, we dKI lose money overall, which we Plrt down to the state of the
economy. Once again. we made a conscious effort to keep ticket pri￿ as low as Fossibfe, and to have as
many events as possible priced at £10 or tower, and ifs something I belreve we need to contsnue to do next year.
One frnal note- I do hy to see eath and every one of you at our Comedy Night on November 8th. We know you
have a Choi￿ of comedy Trighls thts autumn and I'm sure Ihe other ones will be fine, bul ￿rnember DAF is the
Original and still the best
Let's l¢xsk forward to more of the same in 2025.
