Aims and Purposes
The aims and purpose ofway of the Wharves CIO (WOTW) were amended in 2023 to better
reflect the geography and scope of the charity. The aims andpurpose of Wayof the
wha￿e$ CIO is to odvance the education of the public in the maritime and industrial
heritage of Bideford, East the Waterand the Torridge Estuory.

Since designation of Bideford and the River Torridge as a Heritage Harbour in lanuary 2024.

River Torridge Heritage Group and Heritage Harbour status
Much time has been spent in 2024 developing the partnership of local heritage charities from
alongthe riverTorridge- River'forridEe HLSritagL. Group (RTHG)- The RTHG partnership
fornied in SeptL'mbL'r 2023 and between rhem these herirage organisarions represent about
2000 members/supporters and 200 active voluTJteers (stewards. engiTEeers. restorers.
painters etc). The group, led by WOTW. united around the applicatioT] and subsequent
acrivities related to recognition by Maritime Heritaxe Trust in january 2024 of heritage
harbour status for Bideford & River Torridge. The prospectus agreed by RT14G reviews
achievements in Ihe first year of heritagL' harbour status and outlining future plans that has
been presented to Torridge DC through the Harbour Board and Cultural Development Officer
and will be presented to Bidclord, Northam and Torrington Town Council&
Heritage Ilarbour status is national recognition olthe importance of maritime heritage locally
Phone Box
A planning application has been approved to move the adopted the phone box in Torrington
Streei (adopred 2021) onto the Bideford Station to be sited as agreed with the land owner
Brend Hotel Group. Co-located with Bideford Railway Ileritage Centre on the very popular
Tarka Trail walking and cycle way plans are in place to raise money io move and refurbish

Sales in 2024 were 76. value £672. The most importantsales channels continue to be through
local bookshops and promotion at tslks.

Atycar end 2024 WOTW had a balance of £3,744 in the bank. There are no outstanding
invoice5 to be paid and one invoice forbooks due from 2024 (£16}. Book sales continue to
contribute to funds. I'o achieve objectives in 202S WOTW will continue to apply for relevant
grants and tu fund raise.

At rhe 2023 AGM, held on 30 September 2024, one of the agreed agenda items was to change
the name of thc charity to Bideford & River Torridge Ileritage l.larbour. This will better reflect
the organisations aims and objectives now that Herttage Harbour £tatu£ has been reali£ed. It
is planned to action this chanxL in 2025. The aims and objects of che charity will nor change.
