Report for 2023

Our year mapped out in a time-line

1. The year began with drilling teams testing the land at Tynybryn so they could assess what was needed to ensure a firm footing for the skate park. The outcomes were not brilliant and showed the level of water in the soil and the gas that was being emitted. The site was even too wet to continue the drilling on some days.

2. We started the year with the building of our Outdoor Gym.

3. We had the support of a council parks department officer who assessed the build and questioned the quality of some areas of the softlay flooring, and had the company to come back to relay those areas of concern.

4. We applied for and were awarded funding to hold a series of training sessions for both the gym and skate boarding.

5. We organised a series of sessions both in the schools and in the community to raise awareness and interest in skateboarding.

6. We continued to meet via Zoom and made many decisions via Whatsapp for much of the year. As volunteers had become comfortable with this way of meeting and interacting.

7. The results of the drilling were better that we had thought initially but it did mean that we would need to double the level of foundation with a stabilising mesh in between the two layers.

8. We have been very happy with the level of activity at the outdoor gym, with volunteers reporting often that it is being well used.

9. The Lottery asked for more information regarding the lease, and so we went through a lengthy and expensive journey via our solicitor to get the information.

10. A sign on the outdoor gym was vandalised and replaced by the company, and we then had a safety pad ripped off. This was replaced, and fitted by a member of the council parks department.

11. The extra work that was needed because of the soil was a great concern. We were looking at an extra £20,000 on the price of the skate park. Fortunately the Lottery agreed to fund the extra costs

12. The drainage scheme application to the council was a very onerous task to complete, and when it was finally agreed (it took the best part of the year from start to approval) by the Council it meant adding an extra £44,000 to the cost of the scheme.

13. We applied for some of the extra funding needed to build the drainage scheme to Sport Wales and were lucky to be awarded £35,000.

14. The community and school skate boarding sessions were all well attended and were very successful.

15. We lost our gym training sessions that we wanted to hold due to both inclement weather and because our trainer was offered another position, with WRU.

16. We continued with our fundraising efforts, with raffles and stalls at community events.

17. We were hoping to have the skate park build by the end of the year but we now had to wait until the new year.
