|Summary of<br>the purposes<br>of the charity<br>as set out in<br>its governing<br>document|Para 1.17||To promote and protect women’s health in the UK and internationally by<br>a) Training and educating healthcare workers and health professionals in<br>how to provide optimal care during pregnancy and childbirth;<br>b) Supporting research excellence in women’s health;<br>c) Accelerating the application of research into healthcare environments.|
|Summary of<br>the main<br>activities in<br>relation to<br>those<br>purposes for<br>the public<br>benefit, in<br>particular, the<br>activities,<br>projects or<br>services<br>identified in<br>the accounts.|Para 1.17<br>and 1.19||Below is a summary of our main activities and achievements.<br>**HEALTH LITERACY PROJECT**<br>**Focus Group Event (November 2022)**<br>We held a focus group event in East<br>London with 22 recent (or expecting<br>mothers) who had limited English<br>proficiency. The session was<br>supported by three community<br>researchers, three translators, one<br>consultant, two medical students, and<br>one charity representative. This event was pivotal in understanding the<br>unique challenges faced by non-English speaking pregnant women in<br>accessing healthcare and information.|

**Visual Representation (October 2022)** A visual representation of the Health Literacy Project journey was created to illustrate our goals and milestones. This artwork has been important in communicating the project's vision to stakeholders and participants.

**Queen Mary University Showcase (December 2022)** We presented our Health Literacy Project at the Queen Mary University of London showcase event. This event allowed us to highlight our research findings and the impact of our work to a broader academic and public audience. The showcase included a poster presentation and subsequently a celebratory video was created that captured the essence of the event and our work.

**Orange Tree Trust End-of-Year Report (December 2022)** An end-of-year report was prepared for the Orange Tree Trust, summarising all activities and findings from our initial seed funding for the Health Literacy Project. This report detailed our focus group activities in East London and set the stage for future project phases.

**London Undergraduate Obstetrics and Gynaecology Conference (February 2023)** Two medical students that collaborated with us on the Health Literacy project were invited to give an oral presentation sharing insights from the Health Literacy Project at the London Undergraduate Obstetrics and Gynaecology Conference.

**Festival of Communities (June 2023)** Elly Charity participated in the Festival of Communities in East London, hosted by QMUL. This event allowed us to engage with the local community, share and gather insights related to the health literacy project. We also secured in-kind gifts from ‘Lush’, which we shared at the event and helped support our outreach efforts.

## **EDUCATIONAL COURSES**

**MRCOG Part 3 Revision Course (October 2022 & April 2023)** We conducted two virtual MRCOG Part 3 revision courses. These courses were vital in preparing health professionals for their exams and enhancing their skills.

## **Basic Surgical Skills Course (2023)**

We run 2 RCOG franchised basic surgical skills courses every year (February and September 2024) which are mandatory for trainees in obstetrics and gynaecology to progress to ST4. The course has been running for over 23 years and has consistently had excellent feedback due to the high candidate facilitator ratio and has consistently received higher feedback scores comparted to the same RCOG course.

**Laparoscopy Course (June 2023)** A specialised laparoscopy course was delivered to further train healthcare professionals in advanced surgical procedures, ensuring they stay updated with the latest techniques and practices.

## **INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITY**

**South Africa Workshop (March 2023)** Two trustees, Shakila and Joe, along with Charity Manager Ngawai, travelled to South Africa to discuss and co-creatre a global patient and public involvement framework in women’s health research. This workshop coincided with International Women’s Day and also helped connect global women’s health research teams.

**Uganda Obstetric Fistula Camp (May 2023)** Trustee Ram spent three weeks in Uganda, at an obstetric fistula camp. He not only performed surgeries but also provided training helping with capacity building for health professionals in Africa, enhancing their ability to operate and manage obstetric fistulas.

**Himalayas Health Provision (2023)**

Our Board member, Rashna, has been working tirelessly in the Himalayas to enhance healthcare and safety for women in remote areas of India. Her efforts have been pivotal in improving access to quality healthcare in these regions.

## **ADMINISTRATIVE IMPROVEMENTS AND COMMUNICATIONS**

This year, Elly Charity made strides in improving its management to better support its growing operations. We have several new part-time team members. In addition, our communications efforts have expanded, we now have social media accounts for Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, and YouTube, which we post on regularly, helping to raise awareness and engage the public in our work.

This year, we also created an animation to highlight the charity's work, further broadening our outreach and visibility.

Statement Para 1.18 confirming whether the trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit

## **Achievements and Performance**

|<br> <br> <br> <br> <br> <br> <br> <br> <br> <br> <br> <br> <br> <br> <br>|Summary of<br>the main<br>achievements<br>of the charity,<br>identifying the<br>difference the<br>charity’s work<br>has made to<br>the<br>circumstances<br>of its<br>beneficiaries<br>and any wider<br>benefits to<br>society as a<br>whole.|||Elly Charity has made steady progress this year. Here’s how our work has<br>made a difference:<br>**HEALTH LITERACY PROJECT**<br>• **Engagement:**This project reached a marginalised group, primarily<br>non-English speaking pregnant women in one of the most deprived<br>areas of the UK, who rarely have opportunities to contribute to<br>health care provision or research. Their input directly influenced a<br>future research study aimed at providing solutions to the issues they<br>raised.<br>• **Empowering Participants:**Women participating in our focus groups<br>shared their experiences and highlighted issues that were important<br>to them within maternity care. They valued having a voice in<br>shaping our follow-on research and enjoyed the experience.<br>• **Wider Community and Academic Benefits**<br>`o` **Educational Impact:**Medical students and healthcare<br>professionals involved in the project gained insights into the<br>community’s needs and priorities, improving their<br>understanding and service delivery.<br>`o` **Visibility and Awareness:**The community events and the<br>visual representation of our project have raised awareness<br>and shared our progress. These activities have also allowed<br>us to gather feedback on community priorities, engaging a<br>broader audience including academics, healthcare<br>professionals, and the wider public.<br>• **Team Development, Skills Building and Networking:**We have<br>enhanced women’s health community research capacity in East<br>London. Local community researchers gained valuable skills, such as<br>facilitating discussions and presenting publicly, which contributed to<br>theirprofessional development.|
|---|---|---|---|---|

- **Contribution to Healthier Society:** In a broader context, this project contributes to a healthier society. When mothers are healthy and have a good understanding of their health, they can better care for their children and contribute more effectively to their communities.

- **EDUCATIONAL COURSES** • **Direct Beneficiaries** : Healthcare professionals gained expanded knowledge and skills (e.g. surgical competence etc.) leading to improved patient care.

- • **Indirect Beneficiaries** : Women and the wider patient population benefit from the enhanced care delivered by these upskilled health professionals.

- • **Financial Sustainability** : The paid courses provide funds for sustaining Elly Charity's work.

- • **Knowledge Sharing:** Our courses promote knowledge exchange, enabling attendees to disseminate learning within their communities (in UK and internationally).

- **INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITY** • **Uganda Obstetric Fistula Camp:** Significantly improving healthcare outcomes for women with obstetric fistulas in Uganda. This effort not only treated individual patients but also strengthened local healthcare providers and systems through training.

- • **South Africa Workshop:** Global workshop on patient and public involvement in women’s health research created a framework to actively listen to women, ensuring global research addresses their needs and concerns.

- • **Himalayas Health Provision** : Improved healthcare and safety for women in remote areas of India, providing much-needed medical attention.

- **ADMINISTRATIVE IMPROVEMENTS AND COMMUNICATIONS** • **Enhanced Stability** : Adding part-time team members has improved our ability to manage projects and communicate our work, and reducing risks for the charity ensuring that if anything happens to key personnel, others are able to continue.

- **Increased Public Awareness** : Our boosted social media presence and the creation of an informative animation have raised awareness about the charity and its work.
