Section 3

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

The Charity’s objects, as laid out in the governing documents, are to promote social inclusion for the public benefit amongst migrants of African countries with Portuguese as an official language, also known as países africanos de língua oficial portuguesa, (palop), who are socially excluded on the grounds of their ethnic origin, relieving the needs of those people who are socially excluded and assisting them to integrate into society, in particular but not exclusively by: a) providing a local network group that encourages and enables such people to participate more effectively with the wider community; b) increasing, or co-ordinating, opportunities for such people to engage with service providers, to enable those providers to adapt services to better meet the needs of such people; and c) the provision of education and training, including English language skills, and advice and support on matters such as health, housing and employment and such other support designed to enable them to integrate and adapt to the local community. 2) to advance in life and help young people who are palop migrants by providing mentorship, employment support and other such support which develops their skills, capacities and capabilities to enable them to participate in society as mature and responsible individuals.

Section 4

ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE

IMPACT ON THE COMMUNITY

WHAT THE CHARITY DID DURING THE YEAR:

During the year, the charity set out to support the community with services focusing on unemployment, benefits and homelessness. As we continued to work on these areas, the charity set out to work with local partners to support the community dealing with their mental well-being through referrals to partners such as Mind and Find a balance.

WHAT OUR ACHIEVEMENTS ARE:

As a result of our direct approach to the community needs, we have successfully supported more than 6 people into employment, secured temporary housing for 14 people facing evictions and supported more than 35 people filing for benefits such as UC, housing benefit and disability allowance. Furthermore, once we came out of the lockdown earlier in 2022, we transition to a face-to-face service delivery which presented to us the opportunity to offer a more person-centric approach to our clients.

WHAT WERE THE CHALLENGES:

Coming out of the lockdown was a relief for hundreds of small charities like ours, especially because we saw the pandemic's impact on the community. The impact was almost immediate when we opened an office and began offering face-to-face service delivery. Many African Portuguese speakers were referred to us via word-of-mouth, and through other agencies we were working with. Although we were happy to see the increase in numbers, this presented a challenge due to two factors; the first factor was the fact that we did not have enough volunteers to support the increase in demand. The second factor was financial; albeit we had saved some of the funds we received from the Lottery Fund, this was not enough to cover the costs needed to run the operational side of the service.

WHAT WERE THE BENEFITS TO THE PUBLIC

The broader impact of advice – what we achieve because of solving problems and facilitating support – is just as important. 80% of the people we supported said they felt less stressed, depressed, or anxious as a result of the help they received from us.

WHAT WE PLAN TO DO WITH YOUR DONATIONS: OUR FUTURE PLANS

We plan to continue using the funds we receive to offer face-to-face service delivery. In addition to covering the continuity of our services, we will use our donations to invest in the marketing and training of volunteers and trustees.
