BARNSLEY TABLE TENNIS CLUB TRUSTEES’ REPORT Year End 31 August 2022
Club aim:
a. Club aim
Barnsley Table Tennis Cub (BTTC) aims to inspire everyone to carry a heart for table tennis, to have a desire to improve and a passion that allows them to be the best that they can be. We aim to do this in a positive community atmosphere that provides a feeling of belonging.
a.a. The objects of the CIO are: the promotion of community participation in healthy recreation by providing facilities and coaching for playing table tennis in Barnsley.
b. How we set out to achieve this objective
Barnsley Table Tennis club provides friendly, welcoming sessions and activities for all ages and backgrounds. We are able to welcome members and visitors into friendly, positive activities and sessions through a well presented facility and coaches and supervisors who care for the outstanding community that they serve. The charities facilities continue to be well maintained. Coaches and supervisors are welcoming and understanding to everyone who walks through the charities doors, understanding and listening to everyones story. The charity aims to inspire everyone to carry a heart for table tennis by representing the sport well in everything that it does.
The charity has been able to achieve its objects by launching Junior coaching sessions, where juniors are provided with a high level of coaching, in an environment which is safe and welcoming. This is something that we hope to grow and improve over the coming years.
Club running and performance
Over the course of the period, the club has continued to work closely with Hope House Church, we place our close relationship with them at the heart of what we do and remain thankful for their heart and partnership.
The charity runs on significant voluntary hours, by several trustees, committee members and general volunteers. It is thanks to the persistent hard work and dedication to promote table tennis, by these individuals, that we are able to function as we do day-to-day. The club operates on approximately 40 voluntary hours per week across all sessions, office work and activities.
Thanks to support and funding from the Moving Mental Health Forward Network, in partnership with Barnsley Council, we were able to once again run a PingIt Summer Intake throughout the summer holidays. 25 children were provided with a free bat, t-shirt, kit bag and towel, as we introduced them to the sport. Each session was fun and engaging, focusing on a different part of table tennis each week. Thanks to Ray, John, Thomas, Ben and Joe for their hard work throughout the course of the programme.
Over 50s Bat & Chat
BTTC has an active Bat & Chat session, which runs every Tuesday and Thursday. These sessions provide outstanding social opportunities for people from all areas of Barnsley. They allow members and visitors to come together from different communities and backgrounds, for conversation in a safe and positive environment. These sessions are now getting back to preCOVID attendance, we look forward to seeing these grow over the coming year.

BARNSLEY TABLE TENNIS CLUB TRUSTEES’ REPORT (continued) Year End 31 August 2022
Barnsley Table Tennis League
The Barnsley Table Tennis League is mostly played at Barnsley TTC, providing competitive sporting opportunities for players who play in teams of three. 2021/22 season was a huge success, and the new upcoming season starts in September 2022.
Junior Focus Coaching Division
Barnsley Table Tennis Club runs a junior coaching section for children aged from 5-18. This is lead by Joe Race, with significant work throughout the year from Ian Denton and John Race. The Junior Focus division continues to be a huge success, with good attendance across four sessions each week. In the 2021/22 season at the English Institute of Sport, Barnsley TTC entered four teams, taking first place in division 3 and second in division 1. We also won the under 19’s and 13’s title at the Sheffield Closed.
Providing a safe space for everyone
BTTC is committed to providing a safe, welcoming environment for all its members and visitors. From young to old, we aim to be inclusive and approachable in all sessions and activities that we run as a club. Sessions are set up to be positive and community based, where attendees are asked to swap partners and play new people.
Risk assessment
The club have assessed the major risks towards the charity, financially, and in terms of club management and running. The board of trustees is satisfied that the correct systems and practices are in place to mitigate these risks that are presented. All risk assessments remain up to date and the board of trustees remains committed to this.
Developments and Growth Plans a. Future developments
Over 50’s Bat & Chat
Our over 50’s Bat & Chat is experiencing good uptake on Tuesday mornings. These sessions are a great opportunity for people to get together and socialise over a game of table tennis, as well as taking part in good physical activity. There are plans to do further advertising for the clubs Thursday morning session which at present, isn’t as busy as the Tuesday session. The board remains committed to ensuring that these sessions run well for the people that attend them, as we understand the importance and benefits that the session provides.
BTTC PingIt Summer intake programme
Once again we were able to run a summer intake through the school summer holidays. Barnsley TTC welcomed 25 new children to the club one day a week through the holidays, where they were they received a free bat, BTTC t-shirt, sports towel and a kit bag. Included with this were six coaching sessions that focused on the basics of table tennis. The children took part in fun and engaging games and activities. The uptake on club membership at the end of the programme was disappointing this year, however we still look to doing the same thing again next year. Thanks to Joe, Ray, John, Thomas and Ben for their hard work over the summer in delivering an outstanding programme for the children who took part in it.

BARNSLEY TABLE TENNIS CLUB TRUSTEES’ REPORT (continued) Year End 31 August 2022
Financial review.
a. Going concern
With the fortunate position that the charity finds itself in, with no pressure of bills and constant expenses, moving forward into the next period, the board of trustees are confident that the charity already has sufficient funds to operate for the next year. It’s vital that we consider all financial decisions and that we make them correctly and wisely, based solely on ensuring that we are able to continue promoting table tennis within our community, in a way which allows individuals to thrive and be the best that they can be. The board is aware of the increase in the cost of living and recognises that the cost of running the club is also increasing. We are aware that costs that we currently don’t incur may be required in the future, and we are committed to keeping the impact of this to a minimum.
b. Financial review
The charity remains in a good position regarding finances. It has no pressures of bills and regular expenses however, we the trustees continue to remain cautious and any purchases/expenditure that takes place, will have the future of the charity at heart.
Structure, governance and management.
a. The charity was registered on 01 April 2020. It is governed by its constitution dated 31 March 2020. Copies of the club’s CIO constitution are available on request.
b. Method of appointment or election of trustees.
The board of trustees are responsible for the management committee of the charity. Trustees of the charity are elected by the terms of the CIO Association and the clubs constitution.
There is no maximum number of trustees for the CIO, however there must be at least three charity trustees. If the number falls below this minimum, the remaining trustee or trustees may act only to call a meeting of the charity trustees, or appoint a new trustee. No one is entitled to act as a charity trustee whether on appointment or on any re-appointment until he or she has expressly acknowledged, in whatever way the charity trustees decide, his or her acceptance of the office of charity trustee.
