2024 Annual Report

Stockport Pride 2024 Annual Report - Page 1 - Registered Charity Number 1188841

Introduction

Stockport Pride has continued its work to increase the profile of the LGBTQ+ community while promoting equality, diversity and inclusion locally. This has been done by organising and involvement in a number of activities and liaising with numerous partners.

This report refers to the period from November 2023 to October 2024.

Structure and Governance

Stockport Pride operates as a Charitable Incorporated Organisation under its constitution, as registered with the Charity Commission in England and Wales on 31st March 2020 - with the Charity Number 1188841. The Registered Address of Stockport Pride is 23 High Street, Stockport, SK1 1EG.

The Trustees who were in post during the reporting period were elected at the Stockport Pride Annual General Meeting on 19th November 2023 by the Trustees and other members of the charity. During this period, one Trustee resigned and another member was appointed to become a Trustee.

At the start of the reporting period, Stockport Pride had three Trustees - Ashley Walker, Daniel Ekwebelem and Stephen Bowyer. Ashley Walker resigned from his role of Trustee on 9th June 2024, and Aaron Holmes-Doyle was appointed in his place on 25th August 2024.

The membership of the charity is made up of individuals who have been elected at an Annual General Meeting or appointed at an intervening meeting by the Trustees and other members of the charity.

Trustees and members of Stockport Pride are elected or appointed, and the meetings are held, in accordance with the charity’s Constitution.

Activities

Aside from our large one-day festival, we have been involved in a number of other activities throughout the year.

LGBT+ History Month 2024

February sees the annual LGBT+ History Month across the UK, which is an opportunity to highlight stories from within the LGBTQ+ community.

Stockport Pride 2024 Annual Report - Page 2 - Registered Charity Number 1188841

Throughout the month, Stockport Pride delivered a campaign across the town and online called the Stockport LGBT+ History Month Trail. Central to this effort were visually engaging posters that celebrated influential figures from the LGBTQ+ community. The posters not only highlighted their accomplishments but also shared stories about their backgrounds, struggles, and legacies.

This initiative aimed to educate the public, inspire reflection, and foster pride within the local LGBTQ+ community by showcasing the diverse contributions of these trailblazers to society and culture.

Transgender Day of Visibility 2024

Falling on the last day of March, Transgender Day of Visibility is an international event celebrating and raising the trans community.

Stockport Pride ran an event of music and reflection in the town centre. The Celebrating Trans Joy evening offered a alcohol-free space to appreciate and give thanks to the trans community.

Stockport Pride 2024

The latest one-day Stockport Pride festival took place on Sunday 2nd June 2024, in Stockport Market Place.

Throughout the day there was entertainment from fourteen local and national performers, including headliners Kitty Scott-Claus from RuPaul’s Drag Race UK and Rowetta from Happy Mondays. The stage was compered by The Vegan Queens. One of the new additions to the performances on stage this year was NK Theatre Arts, who performed an extract from their upcoming production of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie.

Actor Nathaniel J Hall from It’s a Sin talked to the crowd about his experiences of living with HIV. Jay Crawford from Sparkle spoke on stage about the importance of support for the trans community at a time when there has been increasing anti-trans rhetoric in the media.

Sixty-five stallholders throughout Stockport Market Place included local community groups, charities, food and drinks vendors, makers and other organisations.

These stalls helped to connect LGBTQ+ people with local services, and helped to promote good health and wellbeing within the community.

Proud 2b Parents hosted the Family Space, for those attending with young children. The Proud Trust hosted a Youth Space, to provide teenagers with activities relevant to them. A Quiet Space was also provided for those who may have felt overwhelmed by the crowds in Stockport Market Place during the festival.

The Stockport Pride 2024 Parade marched through the town centre, starting on the Underbanks, through Merseyway, past RedRock and up to Stockport Market Place. The hundreds of people who participated in the parade helped raise the visibility of the local LGBTQ+ community. A number of those taking part in the parade carried placards designed by Lazypins especially for Stockport Pride.

Everything went smoothly thanks to the work of twenty-nine volunteers on the day and seven committee members who worked all year to organise the day.

Conferences

During the reporting period, Stockport Pride attended three conferences in-person and participated in another two online.

The UK Pride Organisers Network is a great opportunity to network with other Pride organisers and LGBTQ+ activists - sharing contacts, ideas and best practice. We sent two delegates to their conference in Liverpool in November 2023, hosted by Liverpool City Region Pride. While in October 2024, we sent a delegate to their conference in Reading, hosted by Reading Pride.

Workshops we attended at the UK Pride Organisers Network conferences included Diversifying Funding, Creative Funding Models, QTPOC Representation and Local Initiatives, Trans Inclusion in Pride, Police relationships & Working, Creating Safe Spaces and Co-Production in Communities.

We attended the first Greater Manchester LGBTQ+ Sector Engagement Half Day Conference where we found out about some of the initiatives going on locally.

While we weren’t able to attend the European Pride Organisers Network conference in Portugal or the InterPride conference in Columbia, we did participate online - such as voting for the EuroPride 2027 host and attending some talks.

Local Sport

We have been liaising with Stockport County Football Club about how they can make football games more friendly and welcoming for LGBTQ+ people.

Along with a number of other local organisations, we attended meetings with the Stockport County Community Trust to discuss potential strategies to improve inclusivity.

We also attended a few football matches, which included the unveiling of an Intersex Pride Progress Flag that remains flying at Edgeley Park.

Stockport County Football Club have participated in campaigns such as Stonewall’s Rainbow Laces, and have committed to further work to improve equality, diversity and inclusion for LGBTQ+ people at their football games.

In the reporting period we have attended two UK Pride Organisers Network conferences (in October 2023 and November 2024) and two year’s fees were paid for the hire of Stockport Market Place (relating to Stockport Pride 2023 and 2024).

Payments were received from People Like Us Stockport (Stockport LGBT+ PLUS) and Stockport LGBT+ Centre CIC (Stockport Forward LGBT+) for a joint LGBTQ+ Halloween Party that was held at the end of the previous reporting period. The two organisations also held stalls at Stockport Pride 2024, for which payment was received.

During the reporting period we received £137.36 from Stockport LGBT+ Centre CIC (Stockport Forward LGBT+) and £183.36 from People Like Us Stockport (Stockport LGBT+ PLUS). Some Stockport Pride Trustees have connections to these two organisations, which was dealt with in accordance with the charity’s Conflict of Interest Policy.

Advertising

To help promote Stockport Pride 2024 we had a full-page advert in the Stockport Post Newspapers. All other event publicity was organic on social media and through printed posters and flyers. A printed programme was produced for Stockport Pride 2024, which included information about the festival and adverts from sponsors and advertisers.

Sponsorship

We had a lot of interest in sponsorship of Stockport Pride 2024 from both old and new contacts. In a change from the previous year, the various tiers of packages we offer were restructured to simplify the processes involved in obtaining and managing relationships with sponsors. We are very grateful for the support we received from Creative Support, Sky, Totally Stockport, BASF, Stockport Homes Group, Adoption Counts, Wickes and Vernon Building Society - totalling £10,250 received during the reporting period.

Grants

We were successful in applying for grant funding from The National Lottery and SKyLight. We were also awarded an unrestricted grant from PayPal. Throughout this period we raised a total of £11,635.50 through grants.

Stallholders Fees

Sixty-five stallholders on the day of Stockport Pride 2024 included charities, community groups, makers, and food and drink sellers. The fees charged for each of the stalls raised a total of £2,324, which went towards the general event costs.

Donations and Raffle Sales

On the day of Stockport Pride 2024 we held a raffle, which included prizes that were donated by a number

of local organisations. Members of the public were invited to buy raffle tickets and donate money in cash using donation buckets and by card using handheld electronic payment terminals. One of our stallholders, New York New York, made a generous donation of £290 shortly after Stockport Pride 2024. Throughout the year, a number of donations have been received online through a link to PayPal on our website, and through the PayPal Giving Fund.

A total of £781.90 was raised by raffle ticket sales and donations combined across the reporting period.

Future Plans

The committee have had initial discussions on plans for Stockport Pride 2025, which will return to Stockport Market Place on Sunday the first of June.

We aim to continue providing a voice for the local LGBTQ+ community, and to ensure their voices are heard and represented at Stockport Pride events.

We will be continuing to look at what other events and projects we could plan to promote equality, diversity and inclusion within the LGBTQ+ community.

And a high priority when we are planning events is to ensure they are accessible to as many people as possible, and that it is run with sustainability in mind.

“It was great to see so many people attending the event and there was a very friendly atmosphere”

“As always very welcoming”

“Brilliant atmosphere. Very well organised”
