2023 Annual Report

Stockport Pride 2023 Annual Report - Page 1 - Registered Charity Number 1188841

Introduction

Over the past year Stockport Pride events have continued to work towards promoting equality, diversity and inclusion in the local LGBTQ+ community.

This report refers to the period from November 2022 to October 2023.

Activities

Aside from our large one-day festival, we have been involved in a number of other activities throughout the year.

Transgender Day of Remembrance 2022

After our first successful first event for Transgender Day of Remembrance in 2021, we returned with another one in CafeSQ in the town centre.

It was a solemn event of reflection as we lit LED candles and read the names of the transgender people who lost their lives over the past twelve months. During the event we raised £70.71 for local transgender charity Sparkle.

LGBT+ History Month 2023

February is LGBT+ History Month. During the month

we ran an LGBTQ+ history quiz in Stockport Central Library. A planned history talk was postponed, due to health reasons. Other events took place in Stockport that were arranged by other local organisations, while we produced a poster to publicise the programme of events happening in Stockport throughout the month.

Stockport Pride 2023

At the end of July we returned to Stockport Market Place with our annual Pride celebration. This year it was supplemented by the addition of activities on the Underbanks.

The festival included thirteen acts on stage and sixtythree stalls throughout Stockport Market Place.

For those attending Stockport Pride 2023 with young

children, a Family Space was available that was being facilitated by Proud 2b Parents. And a Quiet Space was provided for those who may have felt overwhelmed by the crowds in Stockport Market Place during the festival.

The Stockport Pride 2023 Parade took a new route as part of the event – walking from the Underbanks, through Merseyway, past RedRock, down Bridgefield Street, and up to Stockport Market Place. The Parade helped increase the visibility of the local LGBTQ+ community. It included a large Pride Progress Intersex flag and placards designed with thanks to Lazypins.

Everything went smoothly thanks to the work of sixteen volunteers on the day and ten committee members who worked all year to organise the day.

Rainbow Halloween Party & Volunteer Celebration

A Halloween Party has become a yearly tradition in collaboration with local LGBTQ+ groups, Stockport LGBT+ Plus and Stockport Forward LGBT+. The spooky-themed evening in CafeSQ included live music, a DJ, karaoke and competitions.

During the evening we said thank you to the volunteers from Stockport Pride 2023, including handing out certificates and thank you cards.

Conferences

As the Pride season drew to a close a number of conferences were taking place relevant to LGBTQ+ Pride organisers. These gave an opportunity to network with other event organisers and share best practice.

In October, we sent a delegate to the European Pride Organisers Association conference in Cardiff, which included workshops on accessibility at Pride and a registration system for parade participants.

In November, two delegates were sent to Liverpool for the UK Pride Organisers Network conference, which included working with the police, creating safe spaces, representation of people of colour and funding.

Advertising

To help promote our events during the year, we advertised on Facebook. This included the Halloween Party in October 2022 and LGBT+ History Month in February 2023. All other event publicity was organic on social media and through printed posters and flyers.

A printed programme was produced for Stockport Pride 2023, which included information about the festival and adverts from sponsors and advertisers. Aside from our event sponsors, we accepted two paid adverts to also be placed in the programme.

Sponsorship

We had a lot of interest in sponsorship of Stockport Pride 2023 from both old and new contacts.

We were very grateful in support received from brsk, CDL, Sky, Stagecoach, Totally Stockport, Vernon Building Society, Adoption Counts, Stockport Homes Group, TPD Wealth Management, Wickes, BASF, H-Dyn Services, HURST, The Ted Darling Crime Series, Lynx Taxis, Mosscare St Vincent’s Housing Group and Stockport Credit Union.

Grants

We were successful in applying for grant funding from Forever Manchester, SKyLight and Tesco Community Grants.

Stallholders Fees

Sixty-three stallholders on the day of Stockport Pride 2023 included charities, community groups, makers, and food and drink sellers. The fees charged for each of the stalls went towards the general event costs.

Donations and Raffle Sales

During Stockport Pride 2023 we held a raffle, which included prizes that were donated by fourteen local organisations. Members of the public were invited to buy raffle tickets and donate money in cash in

Stockport Pride 2023 Annual Report - Page 5 - Registered Charity Number 1188841

donation buckets and by card using handheld electronic payment terminals. A total of £543.22 was raised by raffle ticket sales and bucket donations combined.

Future Plans

Since the end of Stockport Pride 2023, the committee have been discussing plans for next year’s festival.

Plans for Stockport Pride 2024 include the possible inclusion of a second entertainment stage, and providing a platform for more emerging artists.

We aim to liaise with people from local LGBTQ+ community groups to ensure their voices are heard and represented at Stockport Pride events.

The Stockport Pride committee are also spending a bit of time refelecting on the aims and objectives of the organisation - and what we should be doing to best serve the local LGBTQ+ community in the borough.

Throughout the year we will continue to run a number of events, such as for LGBT+ History Month and Transgender Day of Remembrance.

We will be continuing to look at what other events and projects we could plan to promote equality, diversity and inclusion within the LGBTQ+ community.

“It was a privilege to be involved in such a fantastic event and great to see Stockport lit up with colour and celebration!”
