Stockport Pride 2022 Annual Report - Page 1 - Registered Charity Number 1188841

## **Introduction**

We have been working to promote equality, diversity and inclusion across Stockport - with a focus on the local LGBTQ+ community.

Throughout the pandemic Stockport Pride participated in two online festivals - Global Pride in 2020 and GM Digital Pride in 2021. As restrictions were reduced, we were in a position to hold in-person events again.

## **Activities**

Throughout the past year we have been involved with a number of events - some as attendees and others we organised.

## **Transgender Day of Remembrance 2021**

We planned our first Transgender Day of Remembrance Vigil for the end of November. It was a solemn occasion to remember transgender and gender non-conforming people who have lost their lives due to transphobia and violence. Set in the surroundings of Saint Peter’s Square in Stockport town centre, it included a speech by a trustee from the transgender charity Sparkle, a reading of the names of the deceased, and a lighting of electronic candles.

The vigil was an opportunity to commemorate those who have lost their lives, highlight the struggles faced today by transgender and gender non-conforming people and for the wider community to show solidarity.

## **LGBT+ History Month 2022**

Every February sees a festival of events throughout the UK celebrating the LGBTQ+ community and their history. Along with events from other local organisations, Stockport Pride delivered a panel discussion, HIV discussion, politics discussion and a history quiz.

## **Stockport Pride 2022**

July saw our largest event so far in Stockport’s Historic Market Place.

showcasing local and LGBTQ+ talent. Six community organisations got up to speak on stage to promote what they do.

Sixty-nine stalls across the marketplace included fortytwo non-profit organisations promoting their services to local LGBTQ+ people.

The parade from Red Rock through Merseyway and up to the Marketplace was attended by hundreds of people - helping increase the visibility of the LGBTQ+ community locally. We had a massive Pride Progress

Intersex flag that we carried for the first time in the parade, along with placards designed and created by Lazypins and more by pupils at Alder Community High School in Hyde.

As well as a Family Space that has been facilitated by Proud 2b Parents in Staircase House, we also had a new Quiet Space facilitated by Stockport LGBT+ PLUS Spectrum in Disability Stockport. The Family Space and Quiet Space helped make our event accessible to more people who may otherwise struggle to attend.

Also throughout the day St Johns Ambulance delivered emergency first aid training to 209 people at our event, as part of their campaign to raise awareness of first aid skills to people in Greater Manchester.

## **Stockport Pride 2022 Volunteer Party**

We held a party to show our thanks to the volunteers who helped us deliver Stockport Pride 2022. We invited those who assisted us in 2022 along to a buffet and party where they were presented with thank you cards and certificates in recognition of the work they contributed.

## **Attending the Manchester Pride 2022 Parade**

With the placards from the Stockport Pride 2022 Parade, supplied by Alder Community High School and Lazypins, we decided to walk in the Manchester Pride Parade. This was attended by a number of our trustees, non-trustee committee members, volunteers and members of the public. We walked alongside Forward Stockport LGBT+ and Stockport LGBT+ PLUS.

## Walking in the Manchester Pride Parade was

an opportunity to help raise the profile of Stockport’s LGBTQ+ community, and promote the work of the borough’s LGBTQ+ groups.

## **Halloween Party 2022**

We collaborated with Forward Stockport LGBT+ and Stockport LGBT+ PLUS to plan the event at CafeSQ. It included a costume competition, pin the eye on the monster and a themed quiz.

The Halloween Party was an opportunity for the

borough’s LGBTQ+ organisations to work together, and for the community to have a bit of fun in a safe space where they can be themselves - which they may not feel able to do so otherwise.

## **Attending Conferences**

Conferences are a great opportunity to share knowledge, discuss best practice and network with similar organisations to our own.

We sent two trustees to the Manchester Pride Conference, which took place in March in The Lowry, Salford Quays. It brought together a number different people together from a range of LGBTQ+ and other organisations in the region. Topics covered included activism, accessibility, young people and tackling racism.

The UK Pride Organisers Conference took place in Cardiff in October. We sent two trustees and one non-trustee committee member to attend. It was a chance for us to share our experiences of the latest Pride season, and look at how things can be improved for the future. Topics covered included HIV and sexual health, accessibility, and managing protests.

## **History and Archiving**

We had a meeting with Stockport Library Service and Stockport LGBT+ PLUS where we discussed and reviewed the archives currently held about the local LGBTQ+ community. It was agreed to organise another meeting later in the year and to submit more items to the local archive.

Following Stockport Pride 2022, we had a meeting with Stockport Museums where we donated a number of items from this year’s event. The donation included a number of placards, posters, programmes and photographs. These items would be used to help educate people about the local LGBTQ+ community.

We have also been asking members of the public for help in identifing a photograph discovered in a publication from the 1980s of an LGBTQ+ rights march.

## **Sponsorship**

We found a lot of interest in supporting our first largescale in-person event since the start of the pandemic.

We are extremely grateful to have received sponsorship from eleven local organisations - Music Magpie, Sky, Vernon Building Society, Stockport Homes Group, Adoption Counts, Ted Darling, Mosscare St Vincent’s Housing Group, HURST, BASF, Sector3, and Lynx Taxis.

## **Grants**

We were successful in applying for grant funding from the National Lottery Awards for All, Stockport Homes Community Fund and Arnold Clark Community Fund.

## **Stallholders Fees**

On the day of Stockport Pride 2022, there were sixty-nine stalls - including forty-two non-profit organisations and twenty-seven commercial stalls.

Their stall fees go towards the hire of Stockport’s Historic Market Place and the costs involved in the overall running of the event.

## **Advertising**

As part of Stockport Pride 2022 we produced a printed programme. It included lists of the stallholders, performers, as well as details of the parade route and event map. The programme also included a list of flags and an explanation of the different sections of the LGBTQ+ community.

Seven organisations took up advertising space in the programme, alongside adverts for our sponsors.

## **Donations and Raffle Sales**

In March we made a donation to the Ukraine appeal run by European Pride Organisers Association. The LGBTQ+ community in Ukraine faces additional challenges in staying safe due to the Russian invasion. The money goes to Kyiv Pride and Kharkiv Pride, and can be used by either organisation to support LGBTQ+ individuals anywhere in Ukraine.

Stockport Pride 2022 Annual Report - Page 6 - Registered Charity Number 1188841

On the day of Stockport Pride 2022 we held a raffle, thanks to prizes that were donated by a number of local organisations. In total £1,142.58 was raised on the day with the raffle and other bucket donations.

The proceeds of our raffle and bucket donations at Stockport Pride 2022 were distributed to three organisations that work with the LGBTQ+ community in the borough - The Proud Trust, Forward Stockport LGBT+ and Stockport LGBT+ PLUS. Each of the three organisations received £380.86.

## **Future Plans**

The Stockport Pride committee are already making plans for future activities.

We have finalised plans for our second Transgender Day of Remembrance Vigil for the end of November, which again will include a solemn reading of the names of those that we have lost and a lighting of electronic candles.

LGBT+ History Month is coming up in February, and we are preparing to deliver a number of events. The events we are aiming to hold during the month include a talk about LGBTQ+ history and a history quiz. We are also planning to start a project recording the personal experiences of local LGBTQ+ people.

Our main festival is booked in to take place on Sunday 30 July 2023. We are currently considering what ways in which our main event can be improved based on feedback from previous years and advice from the conferences we attended.

We will be continuing to look at what other events and projects we could plan to promote equality, diversity and inclusion within the LGBTQ+ community.

“Great atmosphere from the beginning and very enjoyable”

## “It was amazing day”
