## **Opening the door to a lifetime of music** ## Music Maters in Oswestry and The Borderland. Annual Report 2022-23 ## Object The object of the “Music MOB” is To advance educaton for the public beneft among children and young people up to the age of 18 living in Oswestry and the surrounding areas who are in full tme state-funded educaton or being home educated by providing funding for instrumental, singing and music theory teaching, and enabling access to musical instruments and performance opportunites with the aim of enhancing the knowledge, experience, enjoyment, understanding and performance of music . ## Introducton This year we moved into a fourth school, Weston Rhyn Primary providing tuition in guitar and woodwind. By the summer term we were teaching 95 primary school students. Our Music coordinator lead choirs in Holy Trinity and Bryn Offa and a recorder ensemble in Holy Trinity. We added brass teaching to our offer. All 8 teachers reported mostly good attendance and progress albeit at different rates and levels for different students. In November 2022, 45 children performed ,often for the first time, at our closed Beginners concert for parent and local funders. A trophy was awarded to the MusicMOB student who had worked hard and showed the most progress. There were 22 entries for the Oswestry Youth Music Festival including 2 choirs. In all 50 children took part. There was one winner who received a trophy from the Mayor and several received commendations and distinctions. Almost 40% of all Entries were from state schools this year (up from 30% the previous year) We were grateful to the support of several local and visiting musicians and groups in raising the charity’s profile and funds to continue our provision. Local musicians, Chris Symons, Sylvie Reverdy and Samantha Lewis gave a well-attended fundraising recital. The Fron Male Voice Choir invited MusicMOB’s singers to sing with them in their Christmas Carols charity concert and shared the door receipts, The Ridgeway Chorale and the Orthopaedic Male Voice Choir gave concerts and offered donations from door receipts. Violin, cello, flute, clarinet, saxophone, guitar, drums and trumpets ,Cornets Voice tuition is also provided ## Number of instruments now owned by MusicMOB. 160 ## Additonal Actvites for young people 55 children sung in two school based choirs and 20 played recorder in an ensemble 40 sung a specially arranged piece for Christmas and a shared item with the Fron Male Voice Choir 22. entries for the Oswestry Youth Music Festval involving 50 children 11 string and woodwind students attended a workshop at Whitngton Music Festval and 7 performed with professional artists at a family concert in the Festival Programme Exam Results in May 2023 3 students took and passed Grade 1 ( 2 with merit). We aim to hold a reserve for two terms of teaching costs to provide assurance to the teachers and the students that we will not need to end teaching at short notice if income falls.
