Activities
3.1 Statutory Declaration
The tnjstees can confirni that they are fijlly aware of the guidance on public benefit and have tsken
it into account when making decisiorks. The trustees consider that the provision of the orchard is
highly beneficial to the public and provides opportunities for exercise and relaxation in a safe space.
Achievements & Performance
4.1 Outputs and Outcomes for the chari￿s Beneficiaries
The orchard ha5 continued to be a valued and attractive asset and is well used by the local
community and others. People use the site of the orchard to celebrate their own events.
There ha5 been a continuation of wildflower seeding and the paths in the orchard have
been managed to distribute wear.
Pre Covid volunteer working parties were a regular part of the calendar but obviously these
came to end during Covid. In 2024we have tried to revive the approach and we had a very
successful meet up with volunteers srythin& prunin& collecting fruit and general
maintenance followed by coffee and cake. We will hold regular working parties again in
2025.
This year we have concentrated on improving the entrances to the orchard by placing
stepping stones/slab5 in muddy areas and levelling out the Broom Park entrance.
Our local sawmill kindly donated and installed two benches
In October we held two juicing days which were well attended and much enjoyed. Juice
was later distributed to members.
In December we produced our annual calendar filled with orchard photos.
4.2 How the Public have benefrtted
The orchard provided a peaceful breathing Spa￿ for leisure time which has been well-used
and much appreciated by the entire community-

The majority of the apple trees are herttage varietie5 and on the whole are Devon and
Cornwall varieties. The trees. which are labelled and cross referenced on our orchard
noticeboard. gwe.people the opportunity to recognise and learn about local varieties.
The provision of communÈty events and volunteering opportunities
The provision of opportuntties for working and learning new skills to maintain and enhance
the natural environment and protect wildlife.
4.3 Volunteers
Trustees and other volunteers have contributed significantly to the maintenance of the orchard in
many ways, including=
Scythin& raking and comp05ting hay from the rneadow.
Pruning the fruit trees.
Mowing the grass paths.
Repairing and maintainirE fences and gates.
Harvesting rtmls from the willow bed and maintaining the living willow structures.
Providing the administrative and financial support needed to maintain the orchard and the
charity-
The Trustees wish to thank all those volunteers who have continued to look after the tree5 and the
land with such care and thought for one another. Volunteers are vitsl to the existence and
functioning of the orchard and grve a lot of time and energy to managing all aspects of the Charity.
4.4 Membership
The local community comprises roughly 80 households and in 2023 49 of these were fvll members
of the orchard. The members provide the core funding for the orchard maintenance costs on an
annual basis and also offer their time and expertise in the management of the orchard and charitv.
5. Financial Review
5.1 Details of Any Funds Materially in Deficit
The Charity has no funds which are materially in deficit.
5.2 Policy on Reserves
The Charivs policy on reserves is to generate and maintain a balance which is sufficient:
al to preserve the financial viability of the Charity in the event that unforeseen and/or
unavoidable circumstance precipitates a short-term fall in its income.
bl to ensure we have a sizeable fvnd to cover unforeseen expenses arising from the maintenance
of the orchard.
cl to enable the Charity to have ￿ndS which can be used to develop new projects to enh&Tr￿ the
value of the orchard to the community.
For these purposes the Charity will endeavour to generate and maintain reserves which are at least
11)0% of Éts annual tumover.
5.3 Principal Sources of Funding and Outgoings
There are three main SoUr￿S of income for the Orchard- membership subscriptions, grants and
donations. Since we became a charity we are also able to claim gift aid where applicable which has
helped to increase income.

The change of status to a CIO in 2020 also puts the Orchard in a good position to apply for grants in
the future to increase the environmental benefits and facilities. In 202 we re￿]Ved £31xJ from
Dartington Parish Council who has also promised a further £71K) for the spring of 2025. The trustees
are truly grateful for this support and would thank all those involved in these decisions.
The main areas of expenditure are rent paid to Dartington Trust. public liabiltty insurance and
maintenance costs-fi)r example grass mowing and colletting, replating trees and maintaining
fences.

Financial Status
Though modest, The Orchard's current resources from unrestricted donations are more than
sufficient to meet its outgoings for at least next year.
All the indications are that this will ￿maIn the case ft)r the foreseeable future.
