by a resolution passed at a properly convened meeting of the charwty trustees.

given to ensuring that the Trustees have. between them, the skills and experience necessary to
manage the charity effectively and in accordance with charity law.
Activities
3.1 Statutory Declaration
The trustees can confirni that they are fully aware of the guidance on public benefit and have taken
it into account when making decisions. The trustees consider that the provision of the orchard is
highly beneficial to the public and provides opportunities for exercise and relaxation in a safe space.
Achievements & Performance
4.1 Outputs and Outcomes for the Charitys Beneficiaries
The orchard has continued to be a valued and attrartrwe asset and is well used by the local
community and others. People use the sÈte of the orchard to celebrate their own events
and we had a commemorative tree planting for a local resident who had re￿￿tlY died.
In January a successful Wassail was held.
2023 has been a year in which the orchard has seen many improvements primarily funded
from grants. We installedtwo comfortable benches made by Landworks which is a local
charity based at Dartington Hall. We also instslled a brand new shed which has been badly
needed to house the increasing amount of equipment that we need as the orchard
matures. This was partly funded by the Parish Council and the Devon Locality Fund.
Some new bird boxes were erected in March.
In January the orchard was gNen help from Orchard Link with pruning and later in March
some grafting training took pla￿.
There ha5 been a continuation of wildflov￿r seeding.
Pre Covid volunteer working parties were a regular part of the calendar but obviously these
came to end during Covid. In 2023 we have tried to revtve the approach and in September
we had a very successful meet up with volunteers scythin& pruning.collecting fruit and
general maintenance followed by coffee and cake. We will hold regular workin8 parties
again in 2024.
In October we held two juicing days which were well attended and much enjoyed. Juice
was later distributed to members.

4.2 How the Public have benefitted
The orchard provided a peaceful breathing spate for leisure time which has been well-u5ed
and much appreciated by the entire IL)mmunity.
The majorrty of the apple t￿eS are heritage varieties and on the whole are Devon and
Cornwall varieties. The trees, which are labelled and cross referenced on our orchard
noticeboard. gNe people the opportunty to recognise and learn about local varieties.
The provision of communty events and volunteering opportuntties
The provision of opportunities for working and learning new 5ki115 to maintain and enhance
the natural environment and protect wildlife.
4.3 Volunteers
Trustees and other volunteers have contributed significantly to the maintenance of the orchard in
many ways. including=
SLVthing, raking and composting hay from the meadow.
Pruning the fruit trees.
Mowing the grass paths.
Repairing and maintaining fence5 and gate5.
HaNestinB rods from the willow bed and maintaining the living willow structures.
Providing the admini5trdtive and financial support needed to maintsin the orchard and the
charity.
The Trustees wish to thank all those volunteers who have continued to look after the trees and the
land with such care and thought for one another. Volunteers are vitsl to the existence and
functioning of the orchard and give a lot of time and energy to managing all aspects of the Charity-
4.4 Membership
The local community comprises roughly 80 householdsand in 2023 51 of these were full members

cl to enable the Charity to have funds which can be used to develop new projects to enhance the
value of the orchard to the community.
For these purposes the Charity will endeavour to Eenerate and maintain rese￿eS which are at least
100% of its onnual turnover.
5.3 Principal Sources of Funding and Outgoings
There are three main SoUr￿S of income for the Orchard- membership subscriptions, grants and
donations. Since we became a charity we are also able to claim gift aid Whe￿ applitable which has
helped to increase income.
The change of Status to a CIO in 2020 also puts the Orchard in a good position to apply for grants in
the futvre to increase the environmentsl benefits and facilities. In 2023 we received £500 from
Magic Little Grants. £2(X) from Dartington Parish Council and £41KJ from the Devon Localtty Fund.
The trustees are truly grateful for this support and would thank all those inVo￿ed in these decisions.
The main areas of expenditure are rent paid to Dartingion Trust. public liability insurance and
maintenance costs- for example grass mowing and collectin& replacing trees and maintaining
fences.
5.4 Remuneration of Trustees
All Trustees act in a voluntary capacity and re￿1ve no remuneration or other material benefits from
their services to the Charity-
Out-of-pocket expenses for small rtems such as mower fuel or printing costs incurred by Trustee5 in
promoting the purposes of the Charity are reimbursed at cost.
Financial Status
Though modest, The Orchard's current resources from unrestricted donation5 are more than
sufficient to meet its outgoings for at least next year.
All the indications are that this will remain the case for the foreseeable future.
