Our inspiration

George was diagnosed with leukaemia at just 22 months old in November 2014. During his near five year battle he sadly relapsed four times and, after having all the treatments there were available, George passed away at home in August 2019 surrounded by his family.

George adored music and nature, had a huge zest for life, and an infectious smile and character. The charity was inspired by George’s experience with music therapy during intensive treatment at Bristol Children’s Hospital. Music therapy was the highlight of George’s week and gave a then four year old George a way to express his frustrations and fears of being in isolation in hospital.

Music therapy isn’t widely available in NHS hospitals, so George’s family set up the charity to bring music therapy to children in hospital, many of whom have serious or life limiting illnesses and disabilities and, like George, spend too much of their childhood in hospital.

“Where words fail, music speaks.” Hans Christian Anderson

Our Mission

Music is part of all of us – in our heartbeats and movements, our laughter, crying and singing. Music Therapy uses music to help children and their families live creatively and resourcefully in the face of illness, disability and trauma.

George’s Rockstars is on a mission to make children in hospital smile as much as George through the power of music therapy.

A message from our Founders

Another amazing year for George’s Rockstars!

This year we have worked incredibly hard to bring even more music to more children in hospital, providing over 2200 hours music therapy sessions in the five hospitals we currently serve.

We have also managed through hard work and dedication to grown our music therapy service and help even more families in hospital than in previous years. This year we have expanded our music therapy service at Southampton Children’s Hospital, our largest regional children’s hospital. We now provide music therapy in 5 departments working with children in intensive care and high dependancy thanks to support from Global’s Make Some Noise! We also have began sessions in the children’s neurological ward and children’s cardiac “Ocean” ward as well as our ongoing work in the children’s Oncology ward, Piam Brown.

We also began music therapy in our 5th hospital, the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Brighton thanks to a legacy left to Sussex Law.

We have welcomed two new music therapists into our growing team after Cathy and Brad left the team for pastures new. Natasha now covers our Brighton music therapy sessions, Sarah has taken on Hampshire hospitals working in Basingstoke and Winchester while Louise heads up all of our work in Portsmouth and Southampton hospitals and we have further plans to reach more hospitals in 2025!

Our fantastic trustees and treasurer John have continued to support our mission with huge thanks to Craig, Daniel, Dean, Mark, Maisie, Katie and Nicola for their continued passion and efforts ensuring George’s Rockstars goes from strength to strength reaching more children in hospital.

I am so incredibly proud of the impact we are having for so many children in hospital during scary and traumatic times, bringing smiles and happy memories to so many children like George and their families.

We are so excited for 2025, with more planned expansion! We really couldn’t do all of this without everyone who donates, gives up time, abseils crazy heights or hosts a gig. So from all of us at George’s Rockstars, you all Rock! Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.

Who we help

Arabella

Arabella spent a long time in hospital after being diagnosed with a form of kidney cancer.

For many children who spend a long time in hospital they can lose all sense of autonomy and control because the nurses and doctors are constantly having to treat, observe and investigate. Injections are given, bloods are taken, heart rate, blood pressure and temperature monitored.

In her music therapy sessions, Arabella took back control. She had choice and was in charge of what and when we played, she loved to conduct and lead the music that we created together. We had fun, but more importantly the music therapy was able to address her psychological and developmental needs.

“On the oncology ward I met a 12 year old boy who had just been diagnosed with leukaemia and had been in theatre that morning to have a central line fitted so that the chemotherapy could be administered. I introduced myself and explained about music therapy, he said that he was feeling really uncomfortable because of his surgery and so didn’t want to do anything. However, his younger sister was visiting and he said that she could do some music. I brought some instruments into the room and his sister and I started to play. As soon as the music started he wanted to join in and I passed him an instrument and the 3 of us played together. Mum then joined in too and so there were 4 of us playing. A few minutes later Dad walked into the room and couldn't believe what he was seeing and hearing, but he immediately picked up a drum and so the whole family were playing together. For this family who were going through a really dark, difficult and frightening time, the music therapy brought them together and enabled them to have a moment of joy and light.” Louise, Music Therapist

Doris

Doris spends lots of time in hospital due to seizures and her family were very excited to have music therapy sessions with Louise after hearing about our work through our trustee Dean.

Doris loved her music therapy with George’s Rockstars even though she was really struggling with her seizures, thank you so much for the music!

8

Toby

Toby is 2 years old and due to being born prematurely with complex medical needs has had many stays in hospital in his short life. Our Music Therapist Louise has worked with Toby both in QA, his local hospital, and at the paediatric intensive care unit in Southampton. Toby loves music and so to be able to break up his hospital stays with an interactive, creative, sensory experience has really helped both him and his mum.

“ I worked with an 8 year old boy who had recently undergone a bone marrow transplant at a London hospital, he had a week back at home but then had to be admitted to his local hospital due to having a high temperature and feeling really unwell. I had met him a few times before as he was often in and out of hospital during his cancer treatment. As soon as I went into his room he got out of bed and wanted to play. He chose all the loudest instruments and asked his mum to put on some rock music. We danced around the room and drummed and sang at top volume along to his favourite songs. At the end of the session his mum said that it was the first time he had got out of bed in the last couple of days and that she hadn’t seen him be so energetic and enjoy himself so much for a long time.” Louise, Music Therapist

Jack

When children are discharged from hospital, they often have to visit frequently for check ups and scans which involve long waits, missing friends at school and can make children and

parents feel anxious. Jack was recently able to have a great music therapy session in the playroom while waiting to see his consultant, making his time and memories of hospital much happier as you can see from that lovely smile!

9

Trev

Trev is a 17 year old with multiple and complex needs who has spent a long time in hospital this year. Despite often feeling very unwell Trev was really motivated by his music therapy sessions and he loved us singing songs together and he would want to include all the doctors and nurses in his songs. The music therapy was able to connect with and bring out the positive, enthusiastic and energetic side of Trev that so often wasn't present when he was so unwell in hospital.

Oliver

Little Oliver had been having a really tough time in hospital.

“After a tough week Oliver is starting to seem more like himself and I can feel like we can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel.

We had a wonderful time today with a visit from Natasha from George's Rockstars which was lovely3 as Oliver loves music! It couldn't have come at a better time as Oliver was having a break off his BiPaP mask so he could properly sit up, join in and he really enjoyed himself 🎶 So grateful for them coming to brighten up our time in hospital! Thank you!”

10

Thomas

Thomas had been in hospital very ill for several weeks recovering from pneumococcal meningitis, and he was slowly rebuilding his physical strength, movement and gradually regaining the sight in his left eye. The music therapist was referred to see Thomas to support interactions and encouraging floor sitting and walking, Thomas had started walking just a few days before he got sick, so he was as keen as everyone to re-access this skill.

Understandably Thomas’ parents had been through a lot, and they were delighted and relieved to see Thomas start engaging with familiar activities and movements again, expressing how music and dancing was a huge part of his life at home too when Thomas reached out to play the drum. The music therapist supported playful interactions, encouraging shaking, drumming and singing, whilst purposefully positioning instruments in different places to support reaching, balance and walking.

Grabbing the guitar, our music therapist Natasha provided some well known nursery songs to accompany and encourage Thomas’ to follow the music walking and they ended up in the corridor, walking and singing with Mum and Dad following behind too.

This session supported the whole family, utilising fun familiar activities and songs to encourage, interact, connect whilst visibly showing the great progress Thomas was making after being so sick.

11

Looking to the future

2025 is already shaping up to be an even bigger year with even more music coming to children in hospitals!

We are excited to announce plans to bring music therapy to Worthing hospital! Bluefin ward was lucky enough to experience music therapy thanks to work from Waves Music Therapy who have asked us to carry on music therapy for the children there so they can concentrate on their community lead service.

Subject to funding, we are also hoping to expand to cover Dorset’s children departments in Dorchester and Poole hospitals! With ongoing support from Teddy Rocks festival, we are looking to ramp up our fundraising in the county to support these families.

Don’s miss out on these exciting plans and more! Keep up to date with our socials or by signing up to our newsletter through out website!

Objectives and Activities

To enhance the wellbeing of children and teenagers who are seriously ill or have a life limiting illness/condition by providing therapies and activities, in particular, but not limited to, music therapy in hospitals in the United Kingdom or in a setting appropriate to their condition.

At the date of this report, the charity had a full time charity manager, part time fundraising manager and three self-employed music therapists providing sessions in hospitals in Winchester, Portsmouth, Basingstoke, Brighton and 5 wards at Southampton Children hospital, with funding secured to expand to provide music therapy sessions in 2025 at Worthing hospital.

All monies raised for George’s Rockstars are donations from fundraising activities, donations, grants or from the sale of merchandise.

The trustees confirm that they have considered the Charity Commission’s guidance on public benefit.

Financial Summary

During the financial period of the report, the charity raised £157,542 through fundraising events, financial grants and donations.

The main fundraising events were the March charity ball which raised £9402,our annual Christmas tree collection organized by a trustee which raised £3,500 in donations to the service. Our annual live music fundraiser for George’s birthday in January raised £1,317.

There were numerous sponsored events including the Spinnaker Tower abseil which raised £14,335, the Dragon Boat race for Childhood Cancer Awareness Month which saw 5 teams raise £2,011, and the Brighton Marathon raised £1,005 in October.

We also released our second charity Christmas single, (It’s Just Not) Christmas Without You written by one of our trustees, which in record downloads raised £520. The song was also played by local radio stations and made number 1 in the South Coast Music Chart!

The charity has been supported by several local organization’s fundraising efforts including a gig by professional covers band the Strand which raised £717 and an Easter live music event that raised £800. A Slice of Vinyl record shop raised £298 during the year through raffles of signed merchandise and festival tickets.

We also continued to apply for financial grants. BBC Children in Need core funding grant for our charity manager continued with a second donation of £13,886. We secured support from Global’s Make Some Noise which began funding our work for a two year period from April 2024 for music therapy in paediatric intensive care and high dependency at Southampton Children’s Hospital, granting £22,536. We received £15,000 from the Garfield Weston Foundation for project costs and the Radcliffe Trust of £5,000 for core costs. We also received small grants including Hampshire and IOW Community Foundation of £5000, Louis Ross Foundation of £2,000, Postlethwaite Foundation of £1000, the Good Exchange of £3,000, the Hendy Foundation of £2,500 and Lord Barnby’s Foundation and the Souter Charitable Trust of £3,000 each. We also received £10,000 in funding for Brighton hospital music therapy through our first legacy gift via Sussex Law.

This fundraising has enabled the charity to expand the music therapy provision at Southampton Children’s hospital from 1 to 5 children’s wards totally 3.5 days of music therapy each week in the hospital and begin in the Royal Alexandra hospital in Brighton, with further expansion planned for 2025 subject to financial review.

Moving forward next year we are looking to diversify our fundraising streams to include grants and corporate partnerships to ensure a sustainable future of the services we provide and help with future service growth to meet demand.

Financial Review

The charity holds its reserves according to policy with an additional balance from fundraising during COVID

19 when service provision and associated costs were limited.

The charities reserves policy is to hold 4 months of current service provision to safeguard our service for our beneficiaries.

14

Trustees' Responsibilities

[The Charities Act 2011 requires the trustees to prepare financial statements for each financial year which] give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the CIO and of the surplus (deficit) of the CIO for that period.

In preparing those financial statements the trustees are required to:

Select suitable accounting policies and apply them consistently.

Make judgements and estimates that are reasonable and prudent.

Prepare financial statements on the going concern basis unless it is inappropriate to

presume that the trust will continue in existence.

The trustees are responsible for keeping proper accounting records, which disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the CIO.

They are also responsible for safeguarding the assets of the CIO and hence taking reasonable steps for the prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.
