Structure, Governance and Management. The charity is governed by a constitution adopted on 27[th] November 2019. The Board of Trustees manages the activities of the charity.

## **Charitable Objectives**

The CIO’s purpose is to encourage the protection of Endangered primates by:

1. Developing conservation and research initiatives that are inclusive, fair and sustainable,

2. Raising awareness nationally and internationally about the illegal primate trade with particular reference to the Endangered Barbary macaque in its natural habitat in Morocco.

3. Communicating research findings

4. Providing capacity building and training to students and conservation practitioners in the UK and internationally with regard to primate conservation, particularly that of the Endangered Barbary macaque.

## **Acknowledgements**

We, as a charity, are aware of the importance of having volunteers and supporters who are generous with their time and financial help. Their support helps us to conduct our work and we thank them for this.

## **Activities and Achievements**

From March 2020 to April 2021, our work has been strongly impacted by the pandemic both in the UK and Morocco. Nevertheless, BMAC volunteers have continued to raise awareness regarding the illegal primate pet trade via social media and our website. We also advised the Moroccan wildlife department about the pros and cons of a reintroduction programme for confiscated Barbary macaques in Morocco. Our volunteer director was scheduled to attend two major meetings but these were postponed until 2022.

We contributed to the IUCN SSC Primate Specialist Group Section for Human-Primate Interactions - - Best Practice Guidelines for Responsible Images of Non-Human Primates https://human primate - - - interactions.org/wp content/uploads/2021/01/HPI Imagery Guidelines.pdf

The volunteer director also took part in international and national virtual conferences and webinars in 2020 discussing the illegal wildlife trade and the risks of sharing photographs of people and

primates in close proximity on social media and provided advice and support for students and others wishing to study primates.

## **Financial Review**

The financial results of the charity for the year are set out below. We received fewer donations in 2020/2021 due to our UK and European zoo donors suffering financially from the pandemic lockdowns. However, we also had far fewer expenses due to the volunteer director being unable to visit Morocco due to the pandemic. The CIO has few fixed costs and so no reserve is required to cover these in the event of closure.

## **Future Plans**

Plans for the coming year include continuing to raise awareness regarding the illegal primate trade and to publish two papers on the work we conducted whilst training our Moroccan counterparts surveying the Barbary macaques of the Rif mountains of Morocco. We hope to participate in further webinars and when able to do so, conduct training workshops, and attend conferences in person to discuss our work.
