whole.|Para 1.20|These were carried out through support for
the Ethiopian Heritage Trust (EHT) in Addis
Ababa and focussed on financial assistance
for the planting and care of 27,441
indigenous tree seedlings in the Entoto
Natural Park in July/August. At the same
time, further groundwork was undertaken in
the Entoto Natural Park to establish a
specialised tree seedling nursery. This
activity was carried out under pressured
circumstances, given the scale of the COVID
pandemic in Ethiopia, and was achieved with
the cooperation of 23 commercial and
charitable Ethiopian institutions, the
participation of 4,593 volunteers, and the
creation of 195 temporary job opportunities
Staff mentoring continued in an ongoing
programme and active participation in the
appointments of a new General Manager
and Board Members of the Ethiopian
Heritage Trust in Addis Ababa was
undertaken. UK activity focussed on raising
funds towards purchase of a vehicle and
subsidising key staff salaries at the EHT
office in Addis, but small sums also were
provided to facilitate EHT management visits
to Entoto Park and for networking visits to
other Ethiopian organisations involved in
biodiversity projects
Apart from COVID, the unclear political
situation in Ethiopia did not provide an easy
environment in which to work.|
