## Shelf FC

## Trustees' report (continued) for the year ended 30 June 2024

## **Objectives and activities**

## **The charity's objects**

To promote community participation in healthy recreation for the benefit of the inhabitants of Shelf and the surrounding area by the provision of facilities to play football. (For the purposes of this clause "facilities" means land, buildings, equipment, access to coaching and organising sporting activities).

## **Mission**

Provide an environment for all our young players regardless of gender, ethnicity, or ability to achieve their potential in football and life.

## **The charity's main activities**

Shelf Juniors Football Club was established in 1988 to provide a home for local children to be involved in organised Junior Football. Since this start date the club has established itself within the local community with over 200 children (ranging from 4 year olds through to 18 year olds). To further compliment this from 2016, the club started to operate teams for Under 21s and ‘Open Age’ with the primary objective to retain our developed players in the game of football.

## **Public benefit statement**

In setting our objectives and planning our activities our trustees have given serious consideration to the Charity Commission’s general guidance on public benefit, in particular the provision of facilities for the coaching, learning and playing of football for the benefit of the Shelf community and the surrounding area with the objective of improving the physical and social well-being of all its members.

## **Achievements and performance**

This season has been one of the Clubs most successful ones, not perhaps in silverware but in the significant growth in our community, teams and kids we now have on our books. Aside from trying to ensure that each team has the right kit, training and match day facilities the main aim of the Club is to continue to expand and provide the opportunity for as many kids and adults as we can accommodate. The main growth area has been the creation of 2 new girl teams, with over 30 girls now registered to play under the Shelf name for the 2024/25 season. We have always encouraged girls to join our boys teams where they can play, but this season we made a specific push to set up at least 1 girls team for the 24/25 season. We have exceeded our expectations and will look to invest in setting up more Girls teams in the coming year. We are also running the Shelf Gala football tournament specifically for Girl teams on the 6[th] July. A special mention to Scott Ogden, Chris Ignatowski and Maizie Robinson for getting this up and running in a relatively short space of time.

As well as bringing in more players we also ran 7 mini-tournaments throughout the year, starting in January with our youngest players from the Soccer Tots (ages 3-6). Another special mention must go out to Luke Armitage who as well as running one of our Under 10 teams also runs the Soccer Tots sessions on a Saturday morning. He suggested to run some mini tournaments through January and February as a way if introducing the kids to a more competitive environment, the tournaments were a great success with all the kids who participated receiving a medal for their efforts! After the success of these tournaments the coaches decided to run some age-group only tournaments at our Westwood Park ground. These ran throughout June and were oversubscribed with teams from around the district within weeks. The main reason why the tournaments were a great success were down to the number of volunteers who helped set up, organise parking, referee games, organise the teams, present trophies, the list goes on. Without their support we could not operate them. Great feedback was received form the participants of the tournament and something we will look to be carrying on in the coming years.

Another reason for the great success of the tournaments was the smooth running of the Café that operates out of the Clubhouse at Westwood Park. Anyone watching football in the Winter months at Westwood appreciates the chance to purchase a bacon sandwich and a Hot Chocolate! The café throughout the year has contributed to around £1,700 which covers most of our rent for the Westwood facilities. A massive thanks goes out to Nicola Kelly, Donna Gibson and Tiah Smith for volunteering their time on a Saturday and Sunday morning to support the cause!

## Trustees' report (continued) for the year ended 30 June 2024

## **Achievements and performance continued**

We have seen our bank balance grow this season as we have recruited more players and seen some great support from local donations. The money that has come in this season will allow us to invest in all our teams to ensure that we can provide the kids with the right environment to continue to grow and play the game we all love.

As well as our growth of the club over the past season there are also a few notable mentions of some key achievements by some of our teams and players.

- Under 9 team coached by Scott Ogden secured 2 promotions in the season and finishing in the top division. As well as this the team raised over £3,000 (primarily via a sponsored walk) so they could attend a tournament in Blackpool that ran over a weekend in May. A great experience and bonding event for everyone involved.

- Oliver from Scott’s team who after all his hard work, commitment and dedication signed a contract with Huddersfield Town.

- Shelf Sunday team won the Bradford Sunday Alliance 2[nd] Division Title

And finally, as always, I’d like to thank all our members and volunteers who have given up their personal time to the Club throughout the year, without their help there simply would not be a club for all the kids to be involved in. There is a lot of work that goes on with each coach and club committee member, so my personal thanks for their continued support.

We are also happy to share our generous sponsors details: MC3 Logistics Howdens G.S.M Civils J&S Roofing Roy Waterhouse Unique Finishes Painting and Decorating Ltd Tatts Barbershop Advanced Water Solutions Tailored Doors Ltd ZIA Logistics Red group Scaffolding Ltd Holts Car and Van Ekulcakes Firesec

## **Financial review**

The net receipts for the year were £9,908, all of which were unrestricted in nature.

## **Reserves policy**

The charity's free reserves, at the year end were £21,921.

The trustees do not have a reserves policy, but it is under consideration for the coming financial year.
