- ADRODDIAD YR YMDDIRIEDOLWYR OPRA Cymru Cyf. Am y flwyddyn a ddaeth i ben 31 Gorffennaf 2021

Mae’r Ymddiriedolwyr, sydd hefyd yn Gyfarwyddwyr yr elusen at ddibenion Deddf Cwmnïau 2006, yn cyflwyno eu hadroddiad gyda datganiadau ariannol yr elusen ar gyfer y flwyddyn a ddaeth i ben 31 Gorffennaf 2021. Mae’r Ymddiriedolwyr wedi mabwysiadu darpariaethau Cyfrifon ac Adrodd gan Elusennau: Datganiad o Arferion Cymeradwy sy’n berthnasol i elusennau sy’n paratoi eu cyfrifon yn unol â’r Safon Adroddiad Ariannol sy’n gymwys yn y DU a Gweriniaeth Iwerddon (FRS 102) (yn weithredol 1 Ionawr 2015).

AMCANION A GWEITHGAREDDAU

Gan gyfeirio at yr Erthyglau Cymdeithasu, amcanion yr Ymddiriedolaeth yw:

Addysgu’r cyhoedd yng Nghymru yn y celfyddydau operatig a hybu datblygu gwerthfawrogiad a chwaeth y cyhoedd o’r celfyddydau hynny drwy hybu opera yn yr iaith Gymraeg. Mae amcanion yr elusen a'r gweithgareddau y mae'r elusen yn ymgymryd â nhw er mwyn cyflawni'r amcanion hynny er budd y cyhoedd.

CYFLAWNIADAU A PHERFFORMIADAU

Yn ystod y flwyddyn ariannol dan sylw (Awst 2020 - Gorffennaf 2021) roedd gweithgareddau perfformio’r cwmni yn bennaf yn amodol ar gyfyngiadau’r pandemig Covid.

Er hynny, cafodd y cwmni fudd o’r cymorth sydd ar gael drwy gronfeydd adferiad brys ac adferiad diwylliannol Cyngor Celfyddydau Cymru, ac felly llwyddodd y Cyfarwyddwr Artistig Patrick Young a’r Cyfarwyddwr Cerdd newydd, Iwan Teifion Davies, i greu cyfres o brosiectau a oedd nid yn unig yn cynnig cyfleoedd gwaith i berfformwyr llawrydd (y rhai yr effeithiwyd arnynt fwyaf gan y cyfnodau clo) ond oedd hefyd yn fuddsoddiad ar gyfer allbwn y sefydliad yn y dyfodol.

Y prosiect cyntaf yn ystod cyfnod y pandemig oedd y prosiect OPRA Sebon: cyfres ‘mini’ o operâu wedi’u bwriadu i’w darlledu ar y teledu, wedi’u sgriptio gan y Cyfarwyddwr Artistig a’r Cyfarwyddwr Cerdd yn gweithio mewn partneriaeth gyda’i gilydd (fel y gwnaethant fel cydlibretwyr ar opera Gareth Glyn a gomisiynwyd yn ddiweddar a ysbrydolwyd gan y nofel Un Nos Ola Leuad), a chawsant eu comisiynu i gael ei gosod i gerddoriaeth gan dri chyfansoddwr Cymreig. Felly, rhoddwyd ‘llinell stori’ yn y gyfres i Gareth Olobunmi Hughes, Claire Victoria Roberts a Pwyll ap Sion yn portreadu bywyd go iawn yng nghefn gwlad Cymru yn ystod y pandemig, a daethpwyd â’r tair stori at ei gilydd yn y casgliad (y ‘finale') wedi’u dylunio i fod yn gadarnhad cadarn o werth 'cymuned' yn ystod cyfnod o argyfwng. Cafodd y gwaith ei ysgrifennu, ei gyfansoddi, ei gastio a’i recordio erbyn dechrau Ionawr 2021, i gyd o dan amodau llym Covid-ddiogel. Rydyn ni nawr yn ceisio dod o hyd i bartner i ffilmio'r gwaith, sy'n para ychydig dros 40 munud.

Galluogodd cyllid ‘Adferiad Diwylliannol’ Cyngor y Celfyddydau i’r cwmni sefydlu cyfres o weithdai tiwtora ar-lein ar gyfer timau sydd â dyhead i fod yn gyfansoddwyr/libretwyr , yn y gobaith y byddai talent newydd yn cael ei ganfod ar gyfer comisiynau yn y dyfodol. Roedd hyn dros y cyfnod rhwng Ionawr ac Ebrill 2021, ac roedd yn cynnig cyfleoedd lled-berfformio i gantorion llawrydd trwy weithdai yn defnyddio rhannau o ddarpar weithiau newydd. Yn ogystal, dangosodd y gweithgaredd ddoniau un neu ddau o gyfansoddwyr y bydd y cwmni'n dymuno cydweithio â nhw yn y dyfodol.

Gyda chymorth pellach gan Gyngor y Celfyddydau (Cronfa Adferiad Diwylliannol 2) aeth y cwmni ati i gynnal rhaglen o weithdai, a fyddai’n cael eu cynnal yn ystod hanner olaf 2021, i ddatblygu opera yn seiliedig ar stori o Bedair Cainc y Mabinogi. Unwaith eto, cynlluniwyd y prosiect fel ffordd o roi cyfleoedd gweithdy, ymarfer a pherfformio i gantorion nad oeddynt, oherwydd cyfyngiadau Covid, yn gallu perfformio; tra hefyd yn datblygu syniad sy’n debygol o ddod yn gomisiwn ar gyfer opera Gymraeg newydd, gyda’r gyfansoddwraig Claire Victoria Roberts.

Yn y cyfamser, trwy gydol yr un cyfnod, datblygodd opera Gareth Glyn (Un Nos Ola Leuad) yn brosiect ag uchelgeisiau llawer ehangach. Cytunodd Cyngor y Celfyddydau i ail-bwrpasu ei grant teithio tuag at wneud ffilm, a daethpwyd â chwmni Opera Cenedlaethol Cymru i fod yn gerddorfa a chorws ar gyfer y prosiect. Daethpwyd â chast o bymtheg at ei gilydd i dreialu’r darn ym mis Chwefror 2021, ac ym mis Gorffennaf, recordiwyd yr opera gyfan, ac eithrio nifer fach o adrannau corws, gyda chast a cherddorfa lawn yn Neuadd Hoddinott, Caerdydd. Erbyn hyn roedd y cwmni cynhyrchu teledu Avanti Media hefyd yn bartner yn y prosiect, a chychwynnodd trafodaethau cyntaf â darlledwyr Channel 4 ac S4C. Erbyn diwedd y flwyddyn ariannol dan sylw, roedd y sefyllfa’n parhau’n ansicr, ond roedd ansawdd yr opera ei hun eisoes wedi dechrau ennyn diddordeb gwirioneddol, ac yn y misoedd yn dilyn y recordio ym mis Gorffennaf, mae’r diddordeb hwnnw wedi cynyddu’n sylweddol.

Mae cefnogaeth Cyngor y Celfyddydau drwy gydol y cyfnodau clo wedi golygu bod y cwmni wedi gallu talu tâl cadw rhesymol i’r Cyfarwyddwr Cerdd a’r Cyfarwyddwr Artistig – am eu hymrwymiad i weithio un diwrnod yr wythnos ar arweinyddiaeth artistig y cwmni. Ym mis Ionawr 2021, cynigodd y cwmni gytundeb dros dro a rhan amser i Swyddog Ymgysylltu Cymunedol – Huw Ynyr – a chafodd y dasg o ddatblygu prosiect arall: opera gomig newydd i blant/teuluoedd o’r enw Cyfrinach y Brenin. Codwyd arian o gronfeydd yr ymddiriedolaeth i gomisiynu’r gyfansoddwraig ifanc Mared Emlyn i gyfansoddi ei opera gyntaf gyda libreto gan arweinyddiaeth artistig y cwmni. Roedd rhan o’r broses gomisiynu yn cynnwys cyfres o weithdai Covid-ddiogel mewn ysgolion cynradd ar draws Gogledd Cymru, a gynhaliwyd yn yr awyr agored yn ail hanner tymor yr haf 2021, ac a gynlluniwyd fel cyflwyniad i opera i blant ifanc. Erbyn diwedd Gorffennaf 2021, y cynllun oedd cwblhau’r gwaith newydd gyda’r bwriad o fynd ar daith (yn amodol ar gyfyngiadau Covid) yng ngwanwyn 2022. Y Swyddog Ymgysylltu Cymunedol newydd oedd â’r dasg o reoli’r prosiect cyfan hwn, fel y ffordd orau o gyflawni ei friff trwy argyfwng Covid.

FFYNONELLAU ARIANNOL

Oherwydd Covid, wynebodd OPRA Cymru amhariad digynsail i’w weithgareddau ac felly i’w gefnogaeth ariannol, ac mae’r ymddiriedolwyr yn ystyriol ac yn ddiolchgar am y gefnogaeth a gafodd y cwmni er gwaethaf hynny yn ystod y cyfnod anodd hwn. Yr hyn sy’n dilyn yw dadansoddiad o’r cyllid a gafodd y cwmni yn ystod blwyddyn ariannol y cwmni, Awst 2020 i Orffennaf 2021; ffynonellau'r cyllid hwnnw; a'r prosiectau yr oedd cyllid i fod i fod ar eu cyfer.

Cefnogodd Cyngor Celfyddydau Cymru y cwmni:

ym mis Mehefin 2020 gyda dyfarniad o £10,000 gan ei Gronfa Argyfwng i gefnogi prosiect OPRA Sebon;

rhwng Hydref 2020 a Mawrth 2021 gyda grant o £22,059 o’r Gronfa Adferiad Diwylliannol (1) tuag at gostau rhedeg y cwmni, a’r gweithdai hyfforddi opera Gweithfeydd OPRA ;

rhwng Ebrill 2021 a Hydref 2021 gyda grant o £17,915 o’r Gronfa Adferiad Diwylliannol (2) tuag at rai costau rhedeg, ond yn bennaf prosiect y Mabinogi, a gafodd ei ddatblygu’n llawn ym mis Medi 2021;

drwy gytuno i ryddhau’r grant o £100,000 a glustnodwyd ar gyfer taith o amgylch Un Nos Ola Leuad, wedi’i ail-bwrpasu, oherwydd y pandemig, tuag at ddatblygu’r prosiect fel ffilm – rhyddhawyd 45% yn ystod y flwyddyn ariannol dan sylw, gyda 45% pellach ym mis Tachwedd 2021 (a’r 10% olaf i’w cyflwyno ar ôl cwblhau ochr ddatblygu’r prosiect ffilm.)

Daeth cymorth ychwanegol i brosiect OPRA Sebon ar ffurf grant o £2,400 gan Ymddiriedolaeth Moondance, a glustnodwyd ar gyfer ffilmio’r prosiect (sy’n cael ei drafod ar hyn o bryd).

Roedd datblygiad y ffilm Un Nos Ola Leuad yn cynnwys chwilio am gwmni cynhyrchu partner a dod â chast o bymtheg o gantorion ynghyd, yn gyntaf i ymarfer a recordio sgôr yr opera gyda’r arweinydd a phiano. Y cynllun yma, i ddechrau, oedd profi ansawdd y gwaith hyd yma (ac ystyried diwygiadau posib), ac yna creu recordiad o’r sesiynau i hyrwyddo’r gwaith gyda darpar ddarlledwyr comisiynu: digwyddodd y gwaith hwn ym mis Chwefror 2021 wedi’i ariannu o weddill y grant comisiwn gwreiddiol gan Gyngor Celfyddydau Cymru, ynghyd â £3,000 mewn cymorth cronfa ymddiriedolaeth gan Elusen Gwendoline a Margaret Davies.

Roedd y rhaglen datblygu ffilm hefyd yn cynnwys: negodi partneriaeth ag Opera Cenedlaethol Cymru i ddefnyddio eu cerddorfa wrth greu trac sain y ffilm (ym mis Gorffennaf 2021); negodi gyda darlledwyr comisiynu yn Channel 4 ac S4C ynghylch creu'r ffilm; datblygu’r rhaglen ddogfen am y nofel wreiddiol a’i dylanwad ar greu’r opera (fel hysbyseb i hyrwyddo’r ffilm arfaethedig); a chasglu'r tîm artistig i greu'r ffilm. Mae rhywfaint o’r gwaith hwn yn dal i fynd rhagddo, ond erbyn diwedd y flwyddyn ariannol berthnasol, roeddem yn gwybod bod Channel 4 wedi dangos arwydd o ddiddordeb yn y prosiect. Roedd hwn yn ddatblygiad gobeithiol gan

arwain at y gobaith y byddai’r cwmni’n gallu gwneud ffilm ar raddfa fwy nag a ddychmygwyd cyn hyn.

Dechreuodd y cwmni ddatblygu prosiect opera plant/teulu Cyfrinach y Brenin yn fuan ar ôl diwedd y cyfyngiadau symud, a thros y flwyddyn neu ddwy nesaf codwyd y symiau canlynol tuag at y comisiwn newydd: £3,800 gan Ymddiriedolaeth Grantiau Bach Clocaennog; £5340 o Gronfa Addysg Thomas Howell; £6,500 gan Ymddiriedolaeth Colwinston; £1,000 gan Gyngor Gwynedd; £2,000 gan Ymddiriedolaeth Leche; £3,000 trwy Gynllun Intern Prifysgol Bangor/Santander; £1012 gan Dŷ Cerdd (y 25% sy’n weddill o’r grant o £1350 i’w dalu ar ôl cwblhau prosiect y comisiwn); a £730 gan First Hydro. Y cyfanswm yw £23,720 (pan fydd yr holl daliadau i mewn).

Daeth y cyfanswm a dderbyniwyd mewn grantiau gan Gyngor Gwynedd i £2,500. Derbyniwyd rhoddion preifat gwerth £4,100, yn benodol i gefnogi ymgysylltiad y cwmni â pherfformwyr ifanc dawnus, y mae mawr eu hangen yn ystod cyfnod anodd y cloeon amrywiol; ond hefyd fel cymorth ychwanegol i hybu ymwybyddiaeth y cyhoedd o weithgareddau’r cwmni. Ar ddiwedd mis Mai 2021, derbyniodd y cwmni gredyd treth theatr CThEM o £3,395, mewn perthynas â’i weithgareddau teithiol ym mlwyddyn ariannol 2019-2020.

YMDDIRIEDOLWR

- REPORT of the TRUSTEES of OPRA Cymru Cyf. For the year ended 31[st] July 2021

The Trustees, who are also Directors of the charity for the purposes of the Companies Act 2006, present their report with the financial statements of the charity for the year ended 31[st] July 2021. The trustees have adopted the provisions of Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) ( effective 1 January 2015).

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

With reference to the Articles of Association, the objects of the Trust are:

To educate the public in Wales in the operatic arts and to further the development of public appreciation and taste for the said arts, through the promotion of opera in the Welsh language. The objectives of the charity and the activities that are undertaken by the charity in pursuance of those objectives are for public benefit.

ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE

During the financial year in question (August 2020 – July 2021) the company’s performing activities were for the most part subject to the constraints of the Covid pandemic.

The company benefitted, however, from support available through the Arts Council of Wales’ emergency and cultural recovery funds, and Artistic Director Patrick Young and the newly appointed Music Director Iwan Teifion Davies were thus able to devise a series of projects that not only offered work opportunities to freelance performers (those whose activities were most seriously affected by lockdown) but also represented an investment for the future output of the organisation.

The first project during the pandemic period was the OPRA Sebon project: an opera mini-series intended for television broadcast, scripted by Artistic Director and Music Director working in partnership (as they had done as co-librettists on Gareth Glyn’s recently commissioned opera inspired by the novel Un Nos Ola Leuad ), and commissioned to be set to music by three Welsh composers. Thus, Gareth Olobunmi Hughes, Claire Victoria Roberts and Pwyll ap Sion were each assigned a ‘story-line’ in the mini-series portraying real life in rural Wales under the pandemic, and the three stories were brought together in the conclusion (the ‘finale’) which was designed as a strong endorsement of the values of ‘community’ through crisis. The work was written, composed, cast and recorded by early January 2021, all under strict Covid-safe conditions. We are now looking to find a partner to film the work, which lasts just over 40 minutes.

Arts Council ‘Cultural Recovery’ funding allowed the company to establish a series of online tutoring workshops for aspiring composer/librettist teams, in the hopes that new talent would

be found for future commissions. This was over the period January to April 2021, and afforded quasi-performing opportunities for freelance singers through workshops of parts of prospective new works. In addition, the activity brought out the talents of a couple of composers with whom the company will wish to collaborate in the future.

With further Arts Council support (Cultural Recovery Fund 2) the company undertook to hold a workshop programme, destined to take place in the latter half of 2021, to develop an opera based on a story from the Mabinogi cycle. Again, the project was designed as a way of giving workshop, rehearsal and performance opportunities to singers who, because of Covid restrictions, were unable to perform; whilst also developing an idea that is likely to become the commission for a new Welsh opera, with composer Claire Victoria Roberts.

In the meantime, throughout the same period, the Gareth Glyn opera ( Un Nos Ola Leuad ) developed into a project with much wider ambitions. The Arts Council agreed to the repurposing of its touring grant towards the making of a film, and the Welsh National Opera company were brought on board to provide the orchestra and chorus for the project. A fifteenstrong cast was brought together to trial the piece in February 2021, and in July, the whole opera, except for a small number of chorus sections, was recorded with full cast and orchestra in the Hoddinott Hall in Cardiff. By this stage the television production company Avanti Media was also partnered in the project, and first approaches were made to broadcasters Channel 4 and S4C. By the end of the financial year in question, the situation remained uncertain, but the quality of the opera itself had already begun to arouse serious interest, and in the months following the July recordings, that interest has multiplied considerably.

Arts Council support throughout lockdown has meant that the company has been able to pay a modest retainer to both the Music Director and the Artistic Director – for their commitment to working one day a week on the artistic leadership of the company. In January 2021, the company engaged a Community Engagement Officer – Huw Ynyr – and he was tasked with developing another project: a new children’s/family comic opera, titled Cyfrinach y Brenin . Money was raised from trust funds to commission young composer Mared Emlyn to compose her first opera, to a libretto by the artistic leadership of the company. Part of the commissioning process involved a series of Covid-safe workshops in primary schools across North Wales, held outdoors in the second half of the summer term of 2021, and designed as an introduction to opera for young children. As of the end of July 2021, the plan was to complete the new work with a view to touring (Covid restrictions permitting) in the Spring of 2022. The new Community Engagement Officer was tasked with managing this entire project, as the best way of fulfilling his brief through the Covid crisis.

FUNDING SOURCES

Because of Covid, OPRA Cymru faced unprecedented disruption to its activities and thus to its financial support, and the trustees are mindful of and grateful for the support that the company nonetheless received throughout this difficult period. What follows is a breakdown of the

funding that the company received during the company’s financial year, August 2020 to July 2021; the sources of that funding; and the projects for which the funding was destined.

The Arts Council of Wales supported the company:

in June 2020 with a £10,000 award from its Emergency Fund to support the OPRA Sebon project;

between October 2020 and March 2021 with a £22,059 grant from the Cultural Recovery Fund (1) towards company running costs, and the opera coaching workshops known as Gweithfeydd OPRA ;

between April 2021 and October 2021 with a £17,915 grant from the Cultural Recovery Fund (2) towards some running costs, but principally the Mabinogi project, which went into full development in September 2021;

by agreeing to release the grant of £100,000 earmarked for a tour of Un Nos Ola Leuad, repurposed, because of the pandemic, towards development of the project as a film – 45% was released during the financial year in question, with a further 45% in November 2021 (and the final 10% due on completion of the development side of the film project.)

Additional support for the OPRA Sebon project came in the form of a grant of £2,400 from the Moondance Trust, earmarked for the filming of the project (currently under negotiation.)

The development of the film of Un Nos Ola Leuad included seeking out a partner production company and bringing together a fifteen-strong cast of singers, first to rehearse and record the opera score with conductor and piano. The plan here was, first, to test the quality of the work to date (and consider possible revisions), and secondly, to create a recording of the sessions to promote the work with prospective commissioning broadcasters: this work took place in February 2021 and was financed out of the remainder of the original commission grant from Arts Council of Wales, topped up with £3,000 in trust fund support from the Gwendoline and Margaret Davies Charity.

The film development programme also consisted in: negotiating a partnership with Welsh National Opera for the use of their orchestra in the creation of the film soundtrack (in July 2021); negotiating with commissioning broadcasters at Channel 4 and S4C about the creation of the film; developing the documentary about the original novel and its influence on the creation of the opera (as a promotional teaser for the proposed film); and gathering the artistic team to create the film. Some of this work is still ongoing, but by the end of the relevant financial year, we knew that there was a small sign of interest in the project from Channel 4. This was a hopeful development and raised the prospect of the company being able to make a film on a scale hitherto unimagined.

The company started to develop the Cyfrinach y Brenin children’s/family opera project soon after lockdown, and over the next year or so raised the following sums towards the new commission: £3,800 from Clocaennog Small Grants Trust; £5340 from the Thomas Howell’s Education Fund; £6,500 from the Colwinston Trust; £1,000 from Gwynedd Council; £2,000 from the Leche Trust; £3,000 through the Bangor University/Santander Intern Scheme; £1012 from Tŷ Cerdd (the remaining 25% of the £1350 grant to be paid on completion of the commission project); and £730 from First Hydro. The total is £23,720 (when all the payments are in.) The première tour of Cyfrinach y Brenin (originally proposed for Spring 2022) was awarded an Arts Council grant in September 2021.

The total sum received in grants from Gwynedd Council came to £2,500. Private donations to the value of £4,100 were received, specifically in supporting the company’s engagement of talented young performers, much needed during the difficult time of the various lockdowns; but also as additional support for promoting the public awareness of the company’s activities. In late May 2021, the company received an HMRC theatre tax credit of £3,395, in relation to its touring activities in the financial year 2019-2020.
