RANE Annual Report 2021/2022

We were somewhat restricted due to the pandemic and lockdown restrictions in terms of what we could achieve, nonetheless RANE has been as active as possible given the circumstances. We said our goodbye to RANE's co-founder the late Nigel Todd and welcomed Amad Ali who took over Nigel's place as a Trustee

Political Campaign in the UK

One of RANE's main objectives is to continue with the political campaign, to raise public awareness and we have continued to organise various online public meetings with members of the public as well as with local, national and international politicians. Over this financial year RANE was unable to organise and arrange any relief work directly, however, we did manage to work with a number of UK and Bangladesh based organisations, offering our support and endorsement of their relief work and promoting their relief efforts with their Ramadan and winter appeals.

Collaboration and joint working

RANE works closely with the British Rohingya Community (BRC) and Burmese Rohingya Organisation UK (BROUK). RANE attended a number of virtual events held by both BRC and BROUK. RANE supported the Newcastle City Council and Voluntary Organisations organising the Holocaust Memorial Day events highlighting the Rohingya genocide.

In August 2021 RANE organised an online event presenting a collection of photos in partnership with Rohingya Photography Competition to showcase photos taken by Rohingya themselves.

The Rohingya Photography Competition is an annual event and there have been two iterations in 2020 and 2021. The initiative was taken by London-based documentary filmmaker Shafiur Rahman. A selection of photos has been exhibited by the Oxford Human Rights Festival in Oxford, UK in both 2020 and 2021.

Review of the exhibition by Professor Dina Siddiqui, Faculty of Liberal Studies, New York University: https://forsea.co/rohingyas-auto-ethnographic-photo-exhibit-oxford-human- rights festival/

"To tell one’s own story, to have a voice, to be heard, should never be things one has to strive for, but for the Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, that too is an aspiration. Their photographs show their struggles and their reality. They also show hope. But above all they show their humanity. Hopefully they will reawaken ours.” Shahidul Alam, Photographer & Writer, Time Magazine Person of the Year 2018, CPJ International Press Freedom Award Winner.

“The Next Generation” is a unique exhibition of photos, focusing on the daily lives of the one million Rohingya refugees who have fled from Myanmar to Bangladesh. Taken by refugees themselves, the photos provide a moving insight into the courageous and creative

ways that the refugees are coping with life in exile.” Jeff Crisp, Former Head of UNHCR Policy Development and Evaluation; Research Associate, Refugee Studies Centre, Oxford & Chatham House, London.
