## **Summary of the objects of the charity set out in its governing document** 

Provide school fees for children in the Dombashawa region of Zimbabwe, improve the facilities at the school and provide medical aid for the sponsored children where necessary. 

We have provided sponsorship for 16 students this year, some of whom have moved from primary school to secondary. This has enabled those young people to access education which they would previously have been unable to do. FoMS have also provided the school with tools to assist them in nurturing their garden, computers to help them access the internet and other equipment to broaden the lessons available, i.e. sewing machines. The charity have maintained a reserve of £5000.00 as we have been unable to access funds to build the school a kitchen or a library. We have ringfenced this amount to provide the school with the structures following the amount being raised by parties specifically for this.

The charities principal source of funding this year has been one grant made by another charity and then a grant provided by an individual. The fund raising by our supporters is third in the list of ways that FoMS accesses funds and regular donations and Amazon Smile make up the last two ways in which funding has occurred for FoMS in the last year. 

Our expenditure is made up primarily of school fees for students but we have also provided funds to support the facility reparation, i.e. borehole repairs. We have also provided all of the children in their final year of school at Mutake School with tools to go on to secondary school with. 

- FoMS do not have an investment policy.

## **Friends of Mutake School** 

## 11 March 2022 

To whom it may concern, 

The Friends of Mutake School is a small Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) and has no paid members of staff, 3 volunteer trustees in the UK, 2 volunteers in Zimbabwe and the assistance of 3 teachers at the school in Zimbabwe. The Lead trustee and the Secretary grew up in Harare, Zimbabwe and still have ties to the country by way of family members living there. We have been an official charity since March 2020 but prior to this the Lead trustee/Chair, Yolanda, has been volunteering her support for the school for about eleven years. 

The main aim of our charity is to provide pupils, who would normally be unable to attend school due to poverty or lack of material resources, the means to attend education. The main provision of our work is working with sponsors who contribute GBP£5.00 per month. This money pays for the child’s school fees, school uniform, books and school equipment as well as providing a small amount left over to provide medical support if the young person needs it. This has provided essential support for students who required medication for AIDS/HIV treatment as well as support for minor ailments which have required antibiotics or eyecare treatment. 

We set up the charity in order for us to provide support in a much more transparent and target driven manner. Following the support for some students, we looked at how else the school environment could be improved to make learning easier for all of the students at Mutake. We have managed to provide the school with a solar powered borehole so that the school have access to regular and clean water, water drums so that the school can grow their own vegetables and planted some trees around the site so that in time, there can be shade for the children to sit in and be comfortable. 

We currently have 4 main projects of varying size, both physically and financially. 

- Build a kitchen for the school - they are currently providing one meal a day for all 1000 students using open fires and there is no storage facilities for fresh produce so most of the cooking is with dry goods and costs are high due to purchasing being done in short orders. Cost - Approx US$20,000.00 (GBP£15,250). This was costed in March 2021 at US$17,000 but prices have increased. We can get a more up tro date quote if required. 

- Provide a library for the school - We have sourced a sustainable repurposed shipping container which would be altered to provide a library structure. The company is based in Zimbabwe so as well as making use of an old shipping container, the carbon footprint for development and sourcing is minimal. We would work alongside other charities to provide the books but require the financial resource for the library. Cost US$7,000 (GBP£5,350) 

- Desks for the classroom - We would like to provide 200 new desk and chair sets for students. Cost - US$5000 (GBP£3,830).

- Trees for the nursery and vegetable seeds for the school patch - We would like to plant 100 trees around the nursery area to provide shade for the children to play in as well as put money to provide seeds for the school to grow their own vegetables in order to reduce costs for the cooking of school meals. Cost - US$1000 (GBP£765) 

For the kitchen, we have architectural drawings and a builder who has provided a quote for the work. The kitchen will provide a secure space for the staff to store, cook and serve the meals and will help to alleviate the potential harm that could come to either staff or pupils in the future. As there will be covered and secure storage facility within the building, more planning and bulk purchases can be made by the school which means they will get better value for their money spent on food. The kitchen will provide an area to prepare the food in a cleaner and more hygienic way, which will in turn lessen the potential for disease or bacteria spread reducing the risk of food poisoning and there will better cleaning of utensils and pots and pans available. The wellbeing of the staff preparing the food will be increased as they will have raised areas to cook the food, leading to reduced periods of time off ill and a reduction in the long-term problems associated with stooping over fires on the floor. 

We are happy to share the architectural drawings or the quotes for the library and we are happy to show the impact of any donations through use of our social media platforms and website.
