Chair's Report 2021/2022
For many of our members it has been a difficult and challenging year. Hopefully we can look forward to better times.
Elaine Vallack our Events Coordinator produced an excellent and varied programme. The regular Zoom talks were well attended. The visits and guided walks have all been full, and it has been good to meet people face to face.
The excavation at Plover Hall, Gilmonby in July led by Beverley Steel was enjoyed by many members. It was very hot most of the time we were there. I'm looking forward to returning this year.
It was very sad to lose Jenny Pritchard, both as a friend and someone who worked so hard for AA.
When we returned to our project at Gueswick Hills in August led by Dr Rob Young, we were delighted to discover some very significant finds. We had many visitors to the site throughout the excavation, some joining in to work watched by their families. We will resume work on the site in August.
Several members stayed locally to enjoy the excavations, good for the local economy too.
Natural England organised another weekend for visitors to Teesdale, and asked for our help. It was good once again that several members of the committee helped with the displays and talks at Wynch Bridge Cottage, and the guided archaeological walks. As a result we raised our profile and gained some new members.
We have been asked to give talks about our work to several local groups, and already bookings have been made to visit our excavations.
At our Fieldwork Task Group and Management Committee, we discussed the feasibility of buying our own GPS equipment in the future. The Swaledale and Arkengarthdale Archaeology Group have kindly let us borrow their equipment, which they bought with a grant some years ago. Shortly after the meeting , I was very pleasantly surprised when Rob Pearson called to say he and his family had bought Altogether Archaeology a Stonex Cube GPS and dedicated laptop computer, in memory of Val Pearson. On behalf of the Management Committee and the membership, I would like to thank the Pearson Family for their very generous donation.
Stephen Eastmead has been getting acquainted with the new equipment, and is producing a user's guide. Having our own GPS will make such a difference when we are planning work, and daily on site.
Carol White has been a member of the Management Committee, and our Membership Secretary for several years, she has decided not to stand for re-election. Thank you Carol for all your hard work.
It has been good working with a supportive and enthusiastic Management Committee.
I look forward to seeing you at our future events.
Tony Metcalfe.
