2020 -2021 Chair's Report
It has been a difficult year, our 2020 AGM was cancelled at short notice due to the Covid 19 restrictions. I would like to thank Jenny and Colin for all their hard work writing our successful application to the Charity Commission.
We had planned to return to Gueswick in Teesdale for two weeks. Dr Rob Young was to have been the lead archaeologist, aided by some of the Management Committee. Plans for Covid restrictions e.g. working in small groups each with a leader, arriving at staggered times were in place. Then further regulations meant we had to cancel at short notice.
However a research team from TerrAce Archaeology and Culture in Europe came to Gueswick to carry out their planned work. TerrACE is a five-year European Research Council grant funded archaeological research project under the direction of Professor Tony Brown of the Tromsø University Museum.
A research student (also an AA member) from Durham University was also doing some related work on site, helped by some of the Management team.
The results will hopefully add to our understanding of previous farming techniques in Teesdale
We hope to return to Gueswick and other activities when it is safe to work in groups.
The talks via Zoom have been successful, enabling members living some distance away to join in. It has been good to see our new members too.
The AA North Pennines Research Framework is being revised by the RF Task Group and the Fieldwork Task Group have been busy planning future activities.
Last year I was awarded a research grant from the Architectural and Archaeological Society of Durham and Northumberland (£500), for research of Tees Pottery (including Holwick). This helped towards the spectrometry costs of the project. Due to Covid the results haven't been finalised at Durham University. We are also waiting for Holwick soil sample results.
Rob Pearson has given me some information about the Durham Book project:
“The Durham Name Books Project is almost ready to start recruiting transcribers. Thanks to Stephen Eastmead for organising and processing more than 9,000 images that Val and I (Rob) made at The National Archives in 2019 and 2020. Initially it was proposed to put the transcribed Books onto the AA website but the technical problems proved insurmountable. Professor Diana Whaley has been very supportive throughout and has agreed that it would be an excellent idea ultimately to put the Durham Name Books onto the (Northumberland) Name Books website. I am currently populating the workbook templates with essential background information ready for them to be sent to transcribers.”
We have dedicated this project to the memory of Val.
I would like to thank Chris Powell for all her hard work as Newsletter Editor, and responsibility for writing successful grant applications to help with our work at Holwick. She has resigned from the Management Committee so she can devote more time to her writing.
Thank you to all the members who have given their continued support and encouragement.
I am grateful for the support and help from the Management Committee throughout this difficult time. We have lots planned and hopefully we will be able to return to our activities later this year, and learn more about the archaeology of our area.
Best wishes
Tony Metcalfe
