Annual Report

Downham Market Men’s Shed

July 2021 – June 2022

Summary

The year has seen us come out of covid restrictions and get back to working more as before. Our members are gradually returning although we have lost some to illness and some to reluctance to mixing. We still meet twice a week and moral is good among the members.

Sales of work have brought in much needed funds and given members enjoyment in the making.

A major upgrade of our toilet facility’s are required to improve them and make them more disabled friendly plus the premises repairs and maintenance in the pipeline which it’s hoped much of this work can be funded by charitable grants. During the year we had various social and fund raising events and outside visits and look forward to more in the year to come.

Chairman’s Report

First, I would like to thank you all for making the shed a happy place that I personally enjoy attending. I enjoy meeting new people who over time have become good friends, you just have to listen to our tea breaks to hear the laughter and banter to know that everyone is having a good time.

The alternative for me would be stuck at home, bored, annoying my long suffering wife and wondering if there was ever going to be anything interesting on TV.

This last year Covid has been a large factor in our shed operation, there have been times when we haven’t had a meeting, times we have met on Zoom and times where we have had to wear masks and observe social distancing; but we, along with many other organisations, are getting back to normal now that Covid is hopefully behind us.

Despite these challenges, we still have achieved quite a lot, thanks to a strong and willing membership and committee.

We have repaired the portacabin roof with Phil, Brian W, Brian P and one or two others, plus a little help from Nobel roofing, it’s now watertight again.

With Stephen’s cooking and help from members and wife’s, we had a BBQ, plant and tool sale in September, which was well attended and enjoyed by all. I’m hoping we can have another this summer. We have been working on improvements to our health & safety for the club. Derek has sourced some safe machine use guidance, from which we can create our own suite of user guides. Trevor organized a Red Cross first aid awareness training event which was informative and worthwhile.

Derek organized our local KBT litter clean up, bringing us some good publicity in the local paper. Derek also manages our Facebook page and profile that has brought us several new members and a lot of local PR.

John Downing organized, amongst other things, our successful and well attended Christmas dinner at the Jolly Brewers, Shouldham Sales of our work continues and some members have shown an aptitude for making certain items:

I would like to thank the committee for their help and support throughout the year, Stephen for being an able treasurer, with support from his vice-treasurer Derek. Thanks to Trevor for keeping us informed as our secretary and who’s minutes are so accurate that I don’t remember them being challenged - I sometimes wonder if no one can remember what was actually said!

My thanks to Brain P for supplying our breaks with tea, coffee and especially chocolate biscuits.

I take this opportunity to thank Alex and the Eternity Church for their enormous help and contribution to our success.

I look forward to next year with anticipation for another productive and enjoyable year. Bryan B (Chair)
