## Annual Report for Ability Sports and Social North East FY End 2021

## Charity Overview

Ability Sports and Social North East was set up to help support Adults with a very wide range of complex Learning Difficulties and other conditions including social mobility. We focus on offering all day Multi Sports sessions to our attendees featuring: Football, Cricket, Golf, Shot Putt, Javelin, Running, Indoor Hockey and Indoor New Age Kurling as well as a structured Walking group and we welcome all over 18s (16-18 welcome with Carer) regardless of Gender, Race or Ability. Our sessions are led by Brian Wood who has vast Experience in this sector and was a former Chairman of Gateshead Special Olympics. We also have a vastly experienced Multi Sports Coach in Kirsty West who works alongside Brian in the vast majority of Sports we offer.

We also run a separate Ladies Drop in group (Men are also Welcome) run by Irene Storey who has over 30 Years Experience in this sector as well as an experience Teaching Adults with Learning Difficulties at a local College which offers those not so keen on Sport, a variety of Activities like Bingo, Crafts, Flower arranging, basic Health and Well-being advice but more importantly somewhere safe to meet up with new and existing friends, just getting these vulnerable Adults out their homes is a massive stride forward after Covid.

We make positive differences in the lives of disabled adults where provision is often lacking in the North East. Through sports we increase a persons social, mental and health well-being. We are not a numbers led organisation and pride ourselves on measuring the impact we make on an individual’s life. Our services also provide vital respite to unpaid carers made up of partners, parents, siblings and friends of service users.

The charity is ran by a strong leadership and management team, each of whom bring skills in lived experience, finance, governance and service delivery.

## Plans for the Future

As the charity moves into its second year, we envisage building our beneficiary base to at least 20 attendees at each week’s sessions. We will also explore commissioning opportunities with local authorities, NHS Trusts and care providers in order to address the lack of provision. We also plan to explore creating additional days of service delivery as we deliver our growth plans.

Our aims are to build up our attendees fitness but as importantly their confidence, self esteem and social mobility. Adult Social Care has seen huge cuts in local budgets and as such; accessible Day Care or Activity centres are diminishing and we expect within a year there will be very few if any left in the Gateshead area highlighting the increased need for our service.

We will also look to build strong relationships with other local charities like Your Voice Counts and the Newcastle United Foundation and form collaborative partnerships with organisations such as; the Special Olympics, Mencap and the Down Syndrome Society which would give us the credibility as the regions only full multi Sports Club in this sector – meaning we can position ourselves as the only club in the region to deliver this type of service.

## Financial Review

Ability Sports and Social North East gained Charitable Status just before the Covid-19 pandemic lock down, this meant we were unable to acquire a bank account which stagnated our launch and ability to fundraise. This is reflected in our FY End 21 accounts showing one months trading.

The external funding landscape remains incredibly volatile however the trustees have plans to use a method of adopting various income generation streams in order to ensure we remain financially robust and viable in the future.

## Achievements

During our first period of trading we have secured an excellent base with safe indoor and outdoor areas for our athletes, we have a lot of interest and expect to hit our 20 regulars pretty quickly.

The biggest achievement is we have been able to attract a talented senior leadership and management team who are invested in growing Ability Sports and Social North East by providing quality opportunities to make a positive difference in the lives of disabled adults who otherwise would be inactive.
