Structure, Governance & Management

Description of the Charity's Trusts

Type of Governing Document:

Constitution

How the Charity is Constituted:

Charitable Incorporated Organisation - Foundation Registered 4[th] March 2020

APPOINTMENT OF TRUSTEES As set out in the Articles of Association, the maximum number and minimum number, respectively, of the trustees may be determined from time to time by ordinary resolution. Subject to and in default of any such determination the maximum number of trustees is eight and the minimum number of trustees shall be three. New trustees will be appointed and thoroughly vetted prior to appointment by the current trustees. It is not expected that any of the trustees will resign from the charity. There is no formal training programme provided to trustees, however they are briefed on their legal responsibilities and supplied with a copy of the Memorandum and Articles of Association. They are also made aware of external training opportunities and encouraged to participate if appropriate. They commit to uphold the aims, vision, mission and values of the organisation. A list of trustees who served during the financial year ending 30[th] June 2023 is included on page 2 of this report.

Additional Governance Issues

MANAGEMENT OF THE CHARITY The charity is governed by the board of trustees, which meets three times a year. The composition of the board is monitored on a regular basis to ensure that all members have the necessary skills and expertise to govern the charity. A budget is set annually and submitted to the trustees for approval.

REMUNERATION The trustees are the key management personnel of the charity, in charge of directing, controlling, running, and operating the charity on a day-to-day basis. All work is voluntary and there is no remuneration.

3

Objects

Statutory Declaration on Public Benefit

The trustees declare they have complied with their duty to have due regard to the guidance on public benefit published by the Charity Commission in exercising their powers or duties.

Fund Raising

ODE raises funds from the public but does not work with professional fundraisers or commercial participators.

In early October 2022 a special event “Jam and Jive” was held in the Jack “en” Jill Restobar, Kalibo, Aklan, The Philippines which not only raised money for our projects but publicised our work and brought it to a wider audience.

On May 6[th] an event in Salford was organised with the local Filipino community to publicise the ODE charity and attempt to raise money through the sale of buns and clothing as well as the promotion of the upcoming sponsored walk.

4

On May 13[th] , 2023, a ten-mile sponsored walk beside the historic Leeds to Liverpool Canal was organised. This event was processed using Wonderful.org a fee-free fundraising platform.

Additional funding came through donations for mugs, clothing and cakes. We would also like to thank Mrs L Whiteland of Yeadon for sending a cargo box of clothing to Kalibo which the Charity was able to sell. These proceeds were given to ODE. While in The Philippines some of the trustees were given a number of donations.

Executive Summary

Activities, Achievements & Performance

ODE is a British charity registered on 4th March 2020 in England & Wales. Money has been raised through sponsored walks in the UK as well as through the sale of mugs, clothing and buns. All of the monies and donations raised have been paid out as awards or equipment with a small balance held as a reserve.

This year has seen the retirement of Mr Richard Gallagher, one of the founding Trustees of ODE. We would all like to thank him for all his advice and contributions during the last three years and wish him all the best for the future. We would also like to welcome Ms Danielle Cape as a new Trustee.

The charity has already started to grow, yet despite its size has made a significant impact on the lives of many disadvantaged students, particularly those in remote areas of The Philippines.

This year has seen a period of consolidation and building foundations. The main focus has been the building of relationships, first between the trustees and the Headteachers of the nominated schools. Secondly developing an official core group of Filippino supporters who will act as local representatives. Thirdly to attempt to develop partnerships between schools in The Philippines and the UK. This we believe is the direction for future progress which we would hope to build upon.

Following the gradual return to face to face learning in The Philipppines at the end of 2022 The Board of Trustees therefore decided to continue their support for the five elementary schools and provide them with some extra resources to raise their educational level.

Our primary fund raising event, was a sponsored walk from Horsforth to Leeds via the historic Leeds to Liverpool Canal built in the late 1770s on May 13th 2023. May 7[th] We were also part of a special “Jam and Jive” in the Jack “en” Jill Restobar, Kalibo, Aklan, The Philippines

During the year some of the Trustees were able to visit four of the schools. Due to security issues, the fifth school in Balila was not visited

However this school, Balila, received a 55 inch internet TV for them to use with USB memory modules and some e- reading materials.

6

Some trustees visited Igpaho in August and were able to arrange the purchase of a 55 inch Internet connected TV accessed through Pisonet in the local barangay. This was delivered and set up in September.

In August 2022, some trustees were able to visit Pook where we arranged the purchase of 55 copies of Developing Reading Power from St Mary‟s Publishing in Laguna, We returned in December 2022 to deliver the books.

In September 2022 we provided Lantangan with twenty five 8 inch android tablets loaded with educational software which do not require an internet connection and can be used where the internet is not available.

In February 2023 we were able to visit Hucab in Ifugao Province in the north of the country. The purchase of an Epson business projector provided essential technology for staff and pupils.

Hucab was also sent a cargo box from the UK containing an integrated computer monitor, for their library and some clothing.

7

Transparency

ODE operates with complete transparency and all money raised, has been used solely for charitable purposes. The charity has no expenses and any work undertaken has been done so on a voluntary basis.

Local Representative

In April 2023 Ms Carel Perez was appointed as a second ODE local representative in order to facilitate the transfer of funds and equipment to partner schools.

Schools

The Board of Trustees has decided for the time being to continue to concentrate our work the five schools we have already been working with. Three of these are on and next to the island of Panay, one on the island of Mindanao and one in the mountainous region of Ifugao in the north of the country.

Projects

1 Balila Elementary School, Lantapan, Bukidnon, The Philippines

Background

At around 2,000 feet Balila is one of the fourteen barangays in the municipality of Lantapan in the province of Bukidnon on Mindanao Island in the south of the Philippines. Balila, a large elementary school with around 1,200 students. In October 2022 we were able to arrange for the purchase, transportation, delivery and set up of a 55 inch internet TV which is being used in the Grade 5 classroom with the help of the Assistant Principal Ms Adela R Ledres. We also provided a package of e- books and reading materials.

Impact

The TV has enabled the Grade 5s to view educational programs provided by the Department of Education as well as enabling teachers to access additional learning resources.

In February 2023 some of the trustees were able to visit the school.

In May we were able to supply a new Epson Digital Projector to replace one that had previously damaged.

We were also able to send a Balikbayan box from the UK containing an integrated computer monitor as well as some clothing and more books for their library

3 Igpaho Elementary School, Tubungan, Iloilo, The Philippines

Background

Igpaho Elementary School lies in the mountains near the town of Tubungan around 90-minute drive from Iloilo, Panay‟s biggest city. Situated in the bottom of a valley around 4 kms from the nearest road and accessible only by a walk of an hour and a half or a dangerous motorbike trip.

Many of the students are malnourished and some have long walks to school.

In October 2022 the Trustees agreed to purchase a television and our representatives Leo and Glen were able to arrange for the transportation, (which did involve the TV needing to be carried for the two hour trek to the school), delivery and set up of a 55 inch internet TV which is now being used in the Grade 3 classroom.

In June one of our trustees Mrs E Cape visited the school again and along with Mr and Mrs G Dellera were able to provide a nutritious meal for all the students in the school.

Impact

The new TV has enabled the students to view the outside world for the first time with the ability to play programs from attached USB drives.

“Our heartfelt thanks and gratitude to ODE - Overseas Development Education in England, your donation helps a lot to our learners and teachers on their classes to make learning more effective.”

“Thank you also to Engineer Glen Dellera and Engineer Leo and the team for your effort and support in installing our TV directly connected to the internet. Also to our parents who extended their help thank you, to ODE trustees God bless and more power!”

4 Lantangan Elementary School, Gigantes Sur, Iloilo, The Philippines

Background

Lantangan Elementary School is on Gigantes Sur Island which is part of the Gigantes, a group of 10 islands of the north east coast of Panay around 18 kms from the mainland.

Although the school has been substancially repaired after the impacts of Typhoons Frank 2008, Yolanda 2013 and Ursula 2019 it still faces ongoing difficulties and struggles to provide and education and help to it‟s students due to its location.

Two hours from the mainland the island‟s population rely mainly on subsistance fishing for their livelihood.

The school has been provided with 25 8 inch android tablets with specialised educational material for offline learning. We hope to have more details about how sucessful the idea was later in the year.

Impact

After a year of use all the tablets are still working. The tablets have been of particular use to the slower learners who have been able reinforce their learning through audio visual means in years 1 and 3. The students have also been allowed to use them in their spare time.

Thank you so much ODE It is of great help for us and for our learners. God bless & stay safe always Reggie Panado Villanueva

Tnx ODE for the great help to the learners of Lantangan ES . God bless ODE. Marlon Rutor Macalino

Thanks ODE its so helpful to the learners Adela Rubio Ledres

5 Pook Elementary School, Kalibo, Aklan, The Philippines

Background

Our first project was Pook Elementary School in Kalibo, Aklan. One of the smaller schools in Kalibo with many students struggling during the Covid pandemic.

In December 2022 Pook Elementary School was provided with copies of Developing Reading Power which we were able to purchase from St. Mary‟s Publishing in Laguna.

Impact

The Developing Reading Power books have enabled individual learning schemes to be developed to help some of the slower learners progress through reading and comprehension.

Thank you so much for visiting us once again. We always look forward for visitors whose footprints remain in our portals... POOK ES doors are always open for ODE family Mildred Zapansa Isada

The Future

Moving forward, ODE will continue to develop stronger relationships and provide further help with a variety of possible projects.

We are hoping to have some individual fund raising activities during the coming year however these will be impacted by current economic crisis and consequences of the Russian invasion of Ukraine

Currently we are in the process of trying to establish a relationship between a group of schools in the UK and our partner schools in the Philippines. One of our aims for the coming year is to develop purposeful links and institute direct communication between the schools.

It is hoped that more visits to each school can be arranged to identify potential projects that we may be able to assist with.

Fundraising Platforms

Wonderful was joined by PayPal, Facebook and Shop & Give as additional sources of revenue. In February 2023 the Amazon Smile program was withdrawn however we would like to thank them for the support they have given us.

We would also like to thank Kualo for providing us with free web hosting. In The Philippines we would like to thank Jack “en” Jill Restobar in Kalibo, Aklan as well as Mr Jerry Catabijan of St. Mary‟s Publishing in Sta. Rosa City, Laguna.
