Contribution made
by volunteers
Para 1.38 Contribution made by volunteers:
Celi Harper volunteered at the Bandari Project for nearly four weeks.
During that time she trained the new GOTM locally employed teacher,
Zawadi Lukamay. Together they connected with local schools and
devised a plan for the teaching of mathematics in these schools.
Together both teacher’s team taught and created termly plans for the
teaching of mathematics. Celi carried out staf inset with the support of
Zawadi and introduced the teachers to new materials. No other
volunteers joined this year due to covid restrictions. 3 teachers from
Australia were due to volunteer but Australia enforced restrictions on
leaving and entering the country.

Para 1.20 Achievements and Performance
The greatest achievement this year was employing a local
teacher in Tanzania who supported the work at the Bandari
project school but who also supported other local schools in the
training and teaching of Mathematics. Not only did this
empower the locals, it also ensured the project continued in our
physical absence. Having Zawadi team teaching in each class
increased collaboration within the school and allowed the
teachers to diferentiate more easily. As a result, mathematical
knowledge and understanding has increased across all year
groups. Some classes have two maths lessons a day, one in
Kiswahili and one in English and Zawadi noted that when she
was not there for the second lesson, the teachers still used the
manipulatives and if they were unsure they would ask her for
advice. The students are now very familiar with the
manipulatives and use them more readily. The students also use
the materials outside maths lessons.
At the start of 2021, Zawadi was employed with GOTM after the
position was publicly advertised. In December 2021 GOTM
returned to the Bandari Project and together with Zawadi, they
refected on the strengths and challenges of the year. We went
through all new resources and worked on the training days for
teachers to be held in February 2022. We have secured Zawadi
on secondment from the Bandari project for one more year.

The children at the local schools looked forward to Zawadi coming each week to teach mathematics. The teachers were very welcoming and asked questions, sometimes this does not occur if it is a westerner modelling lessons and doing training. The local teachers felt more comfortable around a Tanzanian teacher. Zawadi also searched for maths songs and lesson ideas online to use with the students in her classes. Edx Education donated 100 and 120 pocket charts for use at the local schools. Teachers at Bandari gave up their Saturdays to have additional maths training using the new manipulatives and to clean all resources and trays. Teachers are becoming more confident and are asking more questions if their understanding is not clear. The training focused on the new resources donated by Edx Education but also the importance of translating concepts for students in Kiswahili so the students understand fully. GOTM formed partnerships with international schools in Arusha - United World College and St Constantine's school. Both schools fully supported having Zawadi attend on a weekly basis to observe and partake in mathematics lessons in an international primary setting. GOTM purchased a laptop for Zawadi so she could communicate more effectively with GOTM and share Google docs of planning and feedback. Over the course of 2021, Celi Harper, the founder of GOTM saw a marked improvement in Zawadi’s confidence as a person and as a teacher. She represents the charity well, displaying great initiative. This year we decided to get the trolleys made locally to store the trays and manipulatives in, this way we are saving on environmental costs due to carriage and are putting money back into the local community. The new trolleys were all made of wood by a local carpenter. We connected with an NGO, Twende Education for All in Lusaka, Zambia. We held meetings to see whether it was viable for us to support their projects in the children’s cancer hospital in Lusaka and in local schools in Mpika starting in January 2022.
