Achievements and Performance

Summary of the main achievements
of the charity, identifying the
diference the charity’s work has
made to the circumstances of its
benefciaries and any wider benefts
From January 2020 to August 2020 Gecko on the
Move’s ability to carry out its activities were disrupted
due to the COVID 19 pandemic. The plan was to start
the charity in Florence, Italy by connecting with local

to society as a whole.

migrant organisations. The year started with the resignation of Huw Roberts and a new trustee coming on board, Heather Welch from Edx Education. Throughout the year the trustees have met via Zoom informally to discuss the charity and ways forward. Edx Education did a Podbean with Gecko on the Move in May 2020 which was placed on their site.

In January 2020, GOTM returned to the Bandari School in Tanzania for the third year running. It is always wonderful to return to Bandari to see it’s growth and development and to make a positive impact on the teaching and learning of Maths. The time spent there was only 15 days due to Celi returning to full time work and only being able to secure unpaid leave for this amount of time.

The first day GOTM held a teacher inset session focusing on the Big Ideas of Early Mathematics, recommended by maths specialist Dr Paul Swan. The Bandari teachers also felt they would benefit from inservice on teaching fractions. Edx Education sent two top up kits in addition to fraction manipulatives. Both were sent my DHL and both kits arrived without incurring import tax and duty. All three teachers from the previous years remained and a new teacher was employed. We found it challenging changing the new teacher’s mindset in the short period of time and she needed more modelling and mentoring. Unfortunately on the first day of the second week Cel’s mother had a massive stroke so she had to fly immediately to Australia and left Annemiek to finish up the project. This obviously

impacted the amount of time she could be in each class. It was clear that a 2 week period is just not effective and it needs to go back to one month which means finding volunteers and a co-ordinator for the second half of the project in January 2021.

The trolleys to store the maths manipulatives never arrived from last year (they were sent my freight from the UK) so we made a decision not to send anymore but to just carry the trays and lids in checked in baggage which restricted the number of boxes to 6. In the future this means we will need to get carpenters to build wooden shelving for the additional classes. Building a central storage area in the resource room would benefit the teachers and allow them to share resources. See Bandari Project Evaluation 2020 for further reflections of the project.

GOTM reconnected with Victor Hugo school and the plan was to run a project there in August 2020, however, due to covid this was not possible. GOTM still envisages starting the project in Nepal and is in communication with them, hoping it can take place in 2021.

In June 2020 Edx Education sent maths materials to Florence in preparation for the charity to commence it’s work there in September 2020 with the assistance of teachers and students from the International Schools of Italy. Celi has started sending emails to organisations in the hope of forming links with existing NGOs.

It has been a challenging and frustrating year on many fronts but a positive of this year was that we finally received our full UK charity status on 4th March 2020. Charity number 1188327. This will hopefully give us more credibility and allow us to apply for more funding through larger grant giving organisations and businesses.

In December 2020 no volunteers could take part in GOTM so Celi flew to Tanzania to train a local teacher to put in place for the 2021 calendar year. The position was advertised and 2 prospective teachers were interviewed. Zawadi was chosen (currently a teacher at Bandari). Bandari have agreed to a secondment for one year.

We asked the students of Bandari to return to school early after Christmas. Week 1 was Grade 4 only and week 2 in Jan 2021 the remainder of the classes will return.

Zawadi will teach at Bandari from 8 to 12 noon supporting and team teaching in Mathematics with class teachers. 2 afternoons are for planning. 2 afternoons are for visiting local schools and training other teachers using the 100 pocket chart, She will model lessons to students also. One day a week (Friday) she will attend an International School in Arusha and observe maths teaching in primary classes.

Over the 15 days Celi trained Zawadi and together they planned and team taught.
