Charity Status and st￿Cture
Chichester Marks Holocaust Memorial Day {CMHMDI is a charitable incorporated organisation govemed by
its conslilution. It was registered by the Charity Commission in England and Wales on 2 March 2020. The
trustees are the members of the Charity. In the event of a winding up the members have no liability to
contribute to the payment of CMHMD'S liabilities.
RecnJitm8nt, Appointment and Training of Twsle88
Trustees are recruited from those who share CMHMD'S aims and 8spirabons and musl be able to bring a
breadth and depth of experience and skills to the IrL¢Stee body. Prior lo appointment trustees are briefed on
CMHMD'S activities and on appointment complete Fil and Proper Person forms and Declarations of
Interests. All the tfustees take seriously the obligation to maintsin their knowledge.
Risk Management
The trustees have identified the major risks lo which they believe CMHMD is exposed and Systems have
been eslablished to minimise those risks. The risks are reviewed at each trustees. meeting. The principal
risks relate lo contracts for performances produced to inform and educate the publi¢ on matters Con￿mIng
the Holocaust and genocides.
Govemanco
The overall responsibillty for CMHMD rests with the trustees who meet regularfy to both oversee goveman¢o
and lo make operating decisions.
The trustees endeavour to apply the Charity Govemance Code, including the updated Code published on 8
December 2020, and the Nolan principles (selflessness, integrity, objectivty, accountability, openness.
honesty and leadership). Furthermore believing that corruption, bribery and unf8ir actions hamp8r
development 8nd imped6 prOg￿5S they insist on integrity in all CMHMD'S activities.
Objtr¢tlva8 and actlvlties
CMHMD seeks to both advance the educati¢￿ of the public in the history and experience of the Holocaust
and other genocid85 and. to promote tolerance by local engagement in education and the community.
CMHMD is the successor lo an ad hoc committee which had worked to mark Holocaust Memorial Day with
tivilies, including screenin9S, talks and Con￿rtS.
In January 2015 the committee marked Holocaust Memorial Day with a tribute tri fo￿er Chichester Member
of Parliament John Abel Smith, who campaigned for Religious and Political Rights in the mid-1800's.
For January 2016, the same team, niM workin9 Wlth the Unlverslty of Chichèsterfs Muslc Department and
Chichester Cathedral, organised the production of the opera 'Last Train to Tomorrow, conducted by its
composer Cart Davis.
Working with the D8partmenl of History & Politics at the University of Chichester. the team organised a film
screening of 'Con$piracies- the Evil and the Good, at Chichesterfs New Park Cinema on 27 JanL¢ary 2017.
Perfomances of the Opera PUSH, composed by Howard Moody, look place at Chichester Cathedral on 27
January 2018 and at St Paul's Church, Chi¢fTrester on 11 April 2018
To mark Holocaust Mernorial Day PUSH was performed at Th8 Speakerfs Apartments, Westminster on 28
January 2019. The invitstion onty audience was a cross-paty selection of MP'S, Rabbis, and senior
memb8rs of Jewish and refvgee groups.

Holocaust Memorial Day 2020 was marked with performances of PUSH at Chichester Festival Theatre's
Minerva Theatre and, at Wostboume House Sthool, in old of Sussex Snowdrop Trust.
Covid lockdown regulations prevented planned in person events and so these were replaced by an on line
Memorial Seryice on 27 January 2021. which included a tribute by Gillian Keegan, Chicheslerfs sittin9
Member of Padianknl, io John Abel Smith, Member of Parliament for Chichester from 1831-1859.
On 14 January 2022 CMHMD brought to Chichester Festsval Theatre's MineNa Theatre, Sir Michael
Morpurgo's the Mozart Question. a holocaust based story narrated by Sir Michael and Alison Reid
interwoven with music played by Daniel Pioro and The Storytellerfs Ensemble, Later in the month the film
Waitsng For Anya, based on Sir Michael Morpugro's story of the s8me name, was shown for schools at
ChiGhe$terfs New Park Cinema.
A conversation on 17 June 2022 with the author and historian Dr Helen Fry was held before a sell out
audience as part of The Festival of Chichester.
On 26 and 27 January 2023 the acclaimed film ￿ffiere is Anne Frank was shown ft)r schools at Chichesterfs
New Park Cinema alongside related workshops for the schools and on 27 January 2023 David Nott, the
surgeon noted for his work in war and conflid zones, was interviewed by author Kate Mosse at Chichester
Festival Treat￿,$ Minerva Theatre.
Holoeaust suNivor Steven Frank told his story on 22 June 2023. as part of The Festival of Chichester.

Events in 2024 have included Women Who Resisted, a one woman show from novelist and historian Kate
Mosse. which cèlebrated extraordinary brave women of Wortd War11, further showings of the film ￿ere is
Anne Frank for Sch￿15 alongside related workshops and, as part of The Festival of Chichestsr Peter Lantos
told of his experienc*s under the trtle a Childhood Journey lo Belsen.
Publlc benefrt
The trustees have paid due regard to the Charity Commission's guKlance on public benefit and strongly
beI￿ve in the public benefit of CMHMD'S activities.
Voluntsers
Almost all of the activrties of CMHMD are undertaken by volunteers. No ￿cord is kept of the time given on
voluntary basis but without this Contribution to CMHMD it would not fun¢tion.
Flnanclal rnvlow
The income from tickets sold for charitable events held during the year totalled £6,883 after box offi
commission deducted al source. The direct costs of the events totalled £6,062 and there was therefore
surplus of £821 from the staging of the charitable activities. Ticket prices a￿ set at a level which will cover
the costs but the events are not held for fundraising Pufposes but rather in furtherance of the charity's aims
of advancing the fjducation of the public in the history and experience of the Holocaust and other geno¢ides
and promoting tolerance by local engagement in education and the community.
In 2021 an individual known lo CMHMD lent £2,500 to the Charity unsecured and intsrest free. This loan,
which was outstanding at the year end. was repaid in February 2024.

Trustees do not receive any payment or benefits for their work eilher as trustees or as VO￿n￿er$ and there
are no employees.

Funds not required for current needs may be invested in investments of any kind at the absolute diSc￿tIOn of
the Iruslees.
Fundraislng
Raising funds for CMHMD'S activities is vitsl. Although, as a small charity, CMHMD is not required to follow
fundraising regulations it will at all times abide by Ihe spirit of those regulations.

with applicable law and United Kingdom Accounting Stsndards (United lfjngdom Generally Accepted

The trustees are responsible for keeping adequate accounting records that are sufficient to show and explain
the charity's transactions and disclose with reasonable accuracy at any time the financial position of the
challty and enable them to ensure that the financial statements comply with the Charities Act. They are also
sponsible for safeguarding the assets of the charity and hence for tsking reasonable steps for the
prevention and detection of fraud and other irregularities.
The trustees are responsible for the maintenance and integrity of the Corporate and financial information
included in the charity's website.
Legislation in the United Kingdom goveming the pre￿ration and dissemination of financial statements may
differ from legislation in other jurisdictions.
