ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE
Summary oftheyear
We have maintained a strong presence delivering Brthsh Sign Language Interpreting services in Derbyshire
which has included working main5y in the Heamh seclor under various contracts for example, University
Hospitals of Derby and Burton and Deiby & Derbyshire ICB. We worked together lo ensure that Deaf people
were able lo a¢¢ess their appointments and to be able to speak lo their health professional effectively. Many
GP servi¢es ¢onlinued lo see their patients remotely and this altso meant that we had lo interpret remotely
loo, in a 3 way conversation.
We have continued to provide both face to la￿ and remote inlerpreling serV￿eS matching the demands and
requests.
During the year we welcomed Maria Bradley and sadly lost Stacey Fox and Winston Denerley who have
moved on.
We had the honour of inlerpreling al the King Coronation Commemorative service al Derby Cathedral. Many
other ad hoc assignments have been undertaken working with companies in Derby and the Derbyshir¢ area.
Vve have also delivered Deaf Awareness sessions lo health professionals and other organisalions.
Our Inlerprelers have worked very hard lo deliver many difficult assignments. This has included a lol of
evenings and weekend work. Wilhoul the dedi¢alion of our interpreters we would have had difficulties
meeting these dernands.
We have continued lo develop strong relationships with freelance inlerprelers who have helped us lo deliver
on many medical appointments so the deaf communrty are able lo understand information al their
appointments.
The GP Extra Support contract continues, which has enabled us to support many Clients to obtsin
appointments with their GP or community Heallh services. We liaise wi(h the surgeries to organisè rep&al
pres¢riplions, something which was vital this year as many surgeiies moved to a lelephone-bssed service
and also organise their referrals lo allernalive setvices via the 'Choose and book, system.

British Deaf History museum in Manchester and a Christmas paty.
We worked with Derby College lo recruit deaf people lo join their Course Level 3 Education and training
course as we need 10 9enerale more BSL tutors especially with the new GCSE BSL and the current
interpreter shortage.

During our 34th yearwe have worked hard to continue to provide a

We continue to experience the challenge of the interpreter shortage
which is affectingthe whole ofthe UK and it has also impacted
Communication Unlimited with our recruitment. We have held
different discussions with different people including NRCPD, BSL
Advisory board.
I would like to saya bigthankyou to allthe staff at Communication
Unlimited and the freelance interpreters who have worked with CU
doing the health jobs fortheir continued dedication to provide a

Case stud 1
We were contacted by a family member to say that their deaf
sister was in hospital and was very confused. One of our
interpreters went in to interpret in the Emergency department
and helped communication go smoothly. The sister stayed
in hospital for a week, we provided an interpreter to go in
every day to interpret between the deaf sister and the
hospital staff. We also interpreted the consultations between
the various consultants and doctors with the deaf patient.
Outcome - the Deaf sister understood what was happening
and was able to participate in the discussions and decisions
about his treatment options.
Case stud 2
A deaf family had moved here from overseas and wanted
support to understand how things worked in UK. The family
wanted to know where the deaf support, services and
organisations were in Derbyshire.
Referrals were made to different services and translation
support from written English to BSL was given as the family
had very little understanding of English.
Outcome - The Deaf family have settled down in Derbyshire
and now active participants in the deaf community as well as
working, children are settled in school and learning English

that you illay reign for ever with him
in the life which is to c(xiie.
