ANNUAL REPORT **1ST APRIL 2022 - 31ST MARCH 2023** **“TO PROVIDE YOUNG PEOPLE IN THE SOUTH WHITEHAVEN AREA WITH SUPPORT, GUIDANCE, AND POSITIVE ACTIVITIES, TO HELP THEM TO REACH THEIR POTENTIAL AND BECOME VALUED MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY”.** ## _**BACKGROUND**_ South Whitehaven Youth Partnership (SWYP) launched the 1st of April 2020 and has been running successfully over the past three years and has overcome many difficulties and challenges. SWYP has become one of the main providers of youth work in Copeland, working with over 400 young people aged 8-19 years across the South Whitehaven area; an area clearly recognised with high levels of poverty and deprivation on national measures. (Government IMD 2019 & Cumbria Observatory 2021) SWYP delivers high quality youth work for children and young people living in Mirehouse, Woodhouse, Kells, Greenbank. There are also young people attending from surrounding areas such as Hensingham and Moresby. Delivery takes place through youth clubs, detached youth work, oneto-one support and school holiday provision. ## **CONTENTS:** **TRUSTEE REPORT 2022-23 YOUTH WORK JOURNEY TARGETS AND ACHIEVEMENTS YOUTH WORK TEAM FUNDERS AND SUPPORTERS** 2 ## **TRUSTEE REPORT 2022-23** This has been another great year for SWYP. All the trustees are very pleased with the progress and development of the project, the impact it has in the area and the community contribution it has been able to make through committed and enthusiastic staff, a dynamic manager and the young people who take an active part. It is still only our 3rd year of operation. We look at each trustee meeting at the numbers of young people participating in the project and this measure is extremely strong. Across the Mirehouse and Woodhouse youth sessions 470+ attend and from our 8-19 age group, most in the early-teen years. A key figure is that 165 young people have attended on 10 or more occasions which is a great annual return for a youth project. Both numbers show an increase on last year. We continue to provide the key feature of a safe place to go and meet or make friends and have fun making use of some excellent resources. We have brilliant staff with relevant youth work qualifications who plan and deliver high quality sessions which meet the needs and interests of our young people. We know this because trustees have a regular programme of visiting sessions to be assured of the high standard of delivery. Young people continue to access accredited learning through the project to develop and recognise key skills and to do some informal learning on matters which help them to stay safe and healthy and manage in the modern context. This is our youth work “curriculum” if you like, alongside some fun trips to new places and some rewarding holiday activity programmes which provide help to some parents and carers too. We see this community contribution as a key element of our offer which also includes things like the Jubilee Family Fun Day; activities which bring the community together and support community cohesion. Trustees were particularly pleased to support Jacq Cardy, our Project Manager, in the development of 2 new strands to our work. Firstly, in providing some 1:1 sessions for young people in secondary school experiencing difficulties coupled with activities and support provided out of school. This is Mentorole and has been really well received by a partner school to meet an identified need present in all schools. Secondly, Jacq and her team have developed a Detached provision. That is going out to meet young people who do not want to attend youth centres for whatever reason. Staff go to where young people gather together in the evenings and engage with them often with a focus on keeping safe. This can be difficult and challenging work but our skilled staff, led by Jacq, have made a fine start and established good, productive relationships both in South Whitehaven and into the town centre where young people from local estates often go. Trustees must thank our many community partners such as Cumberland County Council, Active Cumbria, St Benedict’s School, Cumbria Police, Mirehouse Community Association, St Peter’s, Kells RLFC, St Benedict’s RUFC amongst many others. Trustees, staff, young people and their parents and carers remain very grateful to our funders: Copeland Community Fund, Francis C Scott Charitable Trust, Cumbria Community Foundation, Sellafield Ltd (YDF Project), Cumbria County Council, Lottery Reaching Communities and Well Whitehaven. Without them none of this is possible. ## **Mike Priestley – Chair, South Whitehaven Youth Partnership** 3 In May, 3 members of staff took part in a Youth Mental Health First Aid training course delivered by Carlisle and Eden Mind – this to ensures each youth work session has a member of staff who is able to offer support to those suffering mental ill-health. There has been a rise since the covid pandemic of young people needing support and the waiting list for mental health services in Cumbria are long, resulting in young people waiting for long periods of time or not meeting the threshold. Now with this training complete young people have access to support from YMHFA Accredited Youth workers. ## **Quarter 2** From one school holiday to the next – Summer 2022. Both Mirehouse and Woodhouse had a 6-week summer programme funded through the Government initiative Holiday Activities Fund (HAF) and Local Committee (CCC) for the seniors. All groups enjoyed a nutritious hot meal each day and a wide range of sports & activities, which included football, dodgeball, tennis, sport day and The juniors enjoyed a visit from Pet Encounters, where they enjoyed a snuggle from rabbit to posing for a photo with a snake draped over their neck. The seniors chose something different and hired a rodeo bull, where they had a mini comp to see who could stay on the longest. To end the summer, all groups enjoyed a day trip – the juniors enjoyed a day at Gulliver’s World in Warrington, while the seniors enjoyed a day at Blackpool Pleasure Beach. Young people had a great summer enjoying the thrills of the theme parks to making new friends. In June we launched our new Detached Youth Work Project – During summer our focus was around building relationships with young people and having a presence on the streets across South Whitehaven. Since starting staff have offered advice and guidance to which includes safety during the winter months, as youth working are meeting young people dark parks, cattle arches and shop doorways. During one session a young person was scared one evening while waiting for the bus as she had previously been approached, the staff walked her too the bus, waited with her and gave her a personal alarm. These 'little' things are what are making a difference locally while establishing strong relationships. Youth Workers are also working with McDonalds, staff have been given the 'ok' by management to use their premises as a meeting point or a place to engage - this is one of the biggest hot spots within Whitehaven and over the past month this seem to be working positively and we are seeing repeat engagement, over the 6 months youth work staff have engaged with over 100 young people aged 11+ years. 4 Due to our youth provision extending SWYP employed 2 new staff members, Laura Kelly who is qualified Level 3 youth worker joined us to support the launch and delivery of Detached Youth Work, she has been a great asset to the team offering her experience and knowledge. Lyndsay Jones also joined our youth work team as a youth support worker, Lyndsay is new to youth work but her passion for supporting young people shined through during her interview, Lyndsay will be looking to qualify in Youth Work after gaining more experience. ## **Quarter 3** October saw the spooks of Halloween with both junior groups enjoying a UV party with glow sticks, lights and spooky games. A group of 11 young people completed Their Youth Development Fund (YDF) project during October half-term. The group didn’t want to travel too far from home due to some members of the group having anxiety, and choose to travel by train to Carlisle to visit Tullie House Museum, this was the first time the group members had been and really enjoyed their chosen cultural element. The group then enjoyed a meal at Nando’s which again was a first-time experience – each young person had to order their own food, which they hadn’t done before but going through the YDF process has helped to build their confidence in speaking to other. The group then finished off their day at Jump Mania. The 1st December we launched a new 2 year project The Health Triangle funded by Well Whitehaven The project is focussed around health and well-being for residents living in Mirehouse and 2 strands – one focussed around our core group – Young People, looking at healthy eating and changing unhealthy habits, the project started with a big look at healthy eating, food packaging and members plan a monthly healthy meal to be enjoyed by all youth club members. Young people are tasked with ordering food online, the prep and cooking their meal. The second strand is community focused working with a group of women, focussing on healthy family meals and also becoming more active through exercise. Each group member was given a slow cooker and the group work together to decide on a monthly meal, they then share tips, how easy or hard it was to prepare and family enjoyment. 5 Later on in December Woodhouse and Mirehouse Junior youth clubs came together for a joint Christmas Party, young people enjoyed pizza and chips, party games and a visit from the Grinch who caused chaos. Each young person also went home with a new game and party bag, this was thanks to a generous from Hensingham RLFC. Christmas also saw the return of the Youth Club in a Bag as part of Winter HAF. 60 bags of activities which included Lego, family games and festive crafts plus 60 bags of nutritious food for young people to make at home, we delivered the bags to children and young people across South Whitehaven. ## **Quarter 4** In January we welcomed back all young people after the Christmas break, we had one group of 4 girls from Detached finalising their YDF to attend during the February half-term. The group went to Newcastle and visited the Life Centre and worked as a team to get out of the escape room. The girls worked really hard on this project and being a street based group it wasn’t easy to complete the necessary paperwork but the girls worked through each challenge and gained their ASDAN awards. February half-term also saw 7 young people complete a food hygiene course – As part of the health project at Mirehouse, young people are prepping and cooking food, we felt it was important to have a key group of young people from each group complete the qualification, so they have the knowledge and understanding to cook food safely. That concludes our highlights from the past year, and it has been a busy one, our main goal is ensuring young people have a safe place to go, provide opportunities and increase their knowledge.
