In Septgrnb8r 2019 our flrst cohort of
children started weekty hockey
sessions with Spencer Lynx, running
until March 2020 when the county was
placed into natlonal lockdown dua to
Covld-19.
In September 2020 our oryinal cohort of
children began their second y8ar of
training and we began recruitment of a
second cohort (recruitment should havo
takon place In schools, summer tsmi
2020 but W8 Wora unable to do this due
to Covid restrlotions). By October 2020
wo had recrult8d an additional 50
chlldren, taklng our totsl number of
members to approximately 90 childrnn.
2021 started in lockdown. and there was
concern that Spencer Lynx members
that had Jolned in October 2020 would
find it hard to stay engaged with the
Club. and would bo less physically
active. To resolve thi& Spencer Lynx
decided to offer On￿h￿ hockey training
sessions.

However. over 50 members had yet to
earn their own hockey sticks. Thorefore,
Spencer Lynx hand-delivered stlcks and
tennls ball8 to every child Ihat wanted to
take part online. Safeguarding rules and
checks were put in place to keep the
children safe onllno_ Spencer Lynx

enabled the children to connect wlth
their friends.
Some of these sessions were run by
Spencer Lynx Ambassador and England
and GB Intemational. Rhys Smith, who
is an Snspiratlonal role model tor the
chlldren. Rhys has also coached in
person at Spencer Lynx during 2021,
when his schedule allowed, and hls
engagement and positlve effect on the
chIkIr￿ is second to none. Havlng a
relevant and inspitational role model is
very important for childrnn. particularfy
those with fewer opportunities.
On the Ilfting of lockdown restsictlons.
wo were able to return to weekty faco40-
face hockey sessions, and continued
these untll the start of Juty 2021. The
hockey season would ordlnarfty have
finlshed at the ond of March 2021, but
the trustees declded to extend the
season for the Lynx children. as they
had already missed out on many
aspects of normal life arKI opportunities
durfng k>ckdown.
Parents reported that because of
Spencer Lynx their chlldren wero more
physlcally actlve and enjoyed improved
rnental wellboing. Parents and schools
reported that the children enjoyed
maklng new frlends. and had increased
confidence, self*steem and were proud
of their club. Schools also reported
chlklrgn showed gr&￿r commitinent to
spor( and willingness to share thelr
skills with others.
