Annual Report to the Charity Commission: Cleveland Concert Band
Introduction This report serves to provide an overview of the activities, achievements, and challenges faced by Cleveland Concert Band over the past year. It highlights the commitment and dedication of the band members, musical directors, and volunteers who have contributed to the continued growth and success of the organization.
Overview of Activities and Achievements The Cleveland Concert Band has had a productive and successful year, further strengthening its reputation within the local community. Notable engagements include our ongoing annual commitment to perform at the Cenotaph in Middlesbrough during the wreathlaying ceremony, as well as our now established Christmas Concert at St. Columba’s Church in Darlington. These events have become cherished fixtures in our calendar, demonstrating our dedication to serving the community through music.
This success is largely attributed to the commitment and enthusiasm of our band members. A special acknowledgment goes to our musical directors, Ben and Di, whose leadership has been instrumental in developing the band’s performance skills and expanding our musical repertoire.
Membership and Engagement As with many organizations, the band has experienced fluctuations in membership over the year. While we have welcomed new members, we have also bid farewell to others who have moved on to pursue different musical opportunities. Despite these changes, our core group of dedicated musicians has remained steadfast, ensuring the band’s continuity and growth. The resilience and commitment demonstrated during the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic continue to be a testament to the strength of our community.
Grant Funding and Policy Development To support our activities and ensure financial stability, a dedicated sub-group led by Denise was established in late spring to focus on grant applications. This initiative has already yielded success, securing a grant of £600 from North Yorkshire County Council to assist with music costs.
In the process of applying for funding, it became evident that many grant providers require charities to have comprehensive policies and procedures in place. Denise and I undertook the necessary work to review, update, and formalize our governance documents to meet these requirements. As a result, we are now well-prepared to pursue further funding opportunities with confidence.
Acknowledgements The efficient operation of the band would not be possible without the dedication of key individuals. Special thanks are extended to:
-
Terry (Band Librarian) : Since assuming this role, Terry has made a significant impact by ensuring that all sheet music is organized and available for rehearsals and performances. His efforts have alleviated a considerable burden from Di, allowing her to focus on her other responsibilities.
-
Di (Secretary and Co-Treasurer) : Di's contributions are invaluable, fulfilling multiple roles within the organization. As Secretary, she coordinates gigs, concerts, and uniform distribution, while also managing administrative tasks. In her capacity as Co-Treasurer, she diligently oversees financial transactions, manages the subs book, and ensures accurate banking, she also undertakes the role of Deputy MD in the absence of our Musical Director. Her dedication and versatility are truly commendable.
-
Ben (Musical Director) : Ben's musical leadership has been pivotal in enhancing the band’s performance quality and ensuring an enjoyable experience for all members.
Conclusion In closing, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all trustees, members, and volunteers who have dedicated their time and energy to Cleveland Concert Band. Your collective efforts have been instrumental in making the band the vibrant and successful organization it is today. We look forward to the opportunities and challenges of the coming year, continuing our mission to bring the joy of music to our community.
On behalf of the Board of Trustees and myself, thank you once again for your commitment and dedication.
Dave Stones
Chairman and Co-Treasurer, Cleveland Concert Band
