## **Objectives and activities**

## **Our objectives are to:**

- Promote humane behaviour towards animals, specifically hedgehogs in Blackpool and the surrounding areas by providing appropriate care, protection, treatment and security for those in need of rescue, care and attention.

- Release back into the wild those hedgehogs which are healthy enough to survive.

- Promote understanding among the general public of hedgehog welfare including, but not limited to, how and when to feed wild hedgehogs; when they require care; and how to provide suitable habitats.

## **Our main activities are:**

- Operating a number of hubs where hedgehogs can be initially brought to when needing care or treatment.

- Supporting and coordinating a broader volunteer network who:

   - Continue providing medication and care.

   - Foster until the hedgehog is at an appropriate weight for release.

   - Collect and transport hedgehogs to a hub.

- Raising awareness at schools and other community groups.

- Fundraising to cover costs such as medication, veterinary fees, consumables and food.

- All of our activities are performed by volunteers, with none being paid for their time.

## **Review of the year ended 28 February 2025**

## **Admissions**

During the year in review, the admissions of hedgehogs increased again to 1,079, an increase of 15% on 2024. We are proud to say at no point during the 2024/25 season that we closed our doors to new admissions when other local rescues were forced to do so due to capacity constraints.

Year ended 28[th] February **2022 2023 2024 2025** Hedgehogs admitted 532 520 940 1,079

## **A few of our admissions during the year**

## **Rosie**

Rosie was found lying on the grass barely moving. On admission she was stone cold and flies had laid their eggs all over her. It took a while to warm her whilst removing the 100s of fly eggs. Rosie was also treated for internal parasites and once healthy and at release weight she was released.

## **Bamm-Bamm & Pebbles**

Bamm-Bamm and Pebbles were found in October on their own in a garden chirping for their Mum who didn’t return. On arrival they were cold, hungry, dehydrated and had flystrike, They stayed with us for the winter months and they were released in the spring.

## **Chestnut, Peanut, Walnut & Hazelnut**

These little hoglets were just 12 days old when they came in to the rescue. Their nest had been disturbed and Mum didn’t return. They required round the clock syringe feeding until they were able to feed themselves. They all did really well and were released when they were over 8 weeks of age.

## **Fundraising**

During the year in review our fundraising team organised a number of events including bingo, coffee afternoons, and summer and Christmas fairs. In addition we introduced a ‘Sponsor a Pod’ initiative where supporters can give an annual donation and receive updates on the residents in that pod throughout the year.

In February 2025 the charity received a grant of £2,000 from The Jean Sainsbury Animal Welfare Trust to provide funding for equipment purchases. We are also very grateful to Glasdon Group Ltd for their £600 donation.

Our JustGiving page has grown in importance as a source of funding for the charity. It provides an easy and convenient way for our supporters to donate, and works especially well alongside our social media presence.

## **Financial performance**

Our income increased 36% in the year ended 28 February 2025. This grew for the fourth successive year, as our charity continues to grow in terms of the numbers of hedgehogs taken into care, numbers of volunteers and community awareness of how we can help. Also within this is a significant donation from a trustee towards the cost of equipping the new facility being constructed in 2025.

Our expenses reduced in the year by 38%, due primarily to us strengthening our partnerships with local veterinary practices and therefore reducing our vet fees. In addition, the prior year included a number of one-off equipment purchases which have not been incurred in the current year.

As a result of the above, the charity’s reserves have increased 239% to £18,783. This is significantly higher than would ordinarily be required to perform the charity's normal activities. However, in 2025 the charity’s main hub is moving to a new purpose-built facility which will require equipping and these reserves will be expended in doing so. It is anticipated that the charity’s reserves will be at a more normal level in February 2026.

**The Trustees (and the hedgehogs) would like to once again say a very big thank you to all our volunteers, as well as all those members of the public who have helped us rescue and rehabilitate hedgehogs. Without your help, none of this would be possible.**
