## **Trustees Annual Report**
## **The organizations purposes are:**
1. To relieve the suffering of stray and unwanted rabbits and guinea pigs who are in need of care and attention and to provide treatment for sick or ill-treated animals.
2. To provide and maintain shelter and other facilities for the reception and care of stray and unwanted animals and to re-home where possible or sanctuary for the elderly and disabled.
3. To educate the public in all aspects of animal care and welfare.
4. Assist with local wildlife calls predominantly birds, in the rehabilitation with a view to release back to the wild.
## **How we carry out these purposes:**
1. We respond to calls from members of the public who find stray or abandoned rabbits and guinea pigs in the streets or dumped in public places.
2. We respond and assist local veterinary clinics with rabbits and guinea pigs brought in
- by members of the public or surrendered by individuals.
3. We provide safe shelter for rabbits and guinea pigs and medical care where necessary.
4. We educate potential adopters and carry out home checks and provide advice on the welfare and care of rabbits and guinea pigs in accordance with the RWAF guidelines and RSPCA guidelines.
## **Our Founding**
We registered as a Charity in February 2020, we had 38 Rabbits and 6 Guinea Pigs in residence on this date.

## **Income & Expenditure**
The end of the year accounts show an Income of £ **24,833.48** . Expenditure of £ **24,612.86** leaving a surplus of £ **220.62** for the year **.**
2022 saw the rise in the Cost of Living Crisis, this not only generated a huge influx in more animals being dumped and surrendered but a massive drop in donations and funds to charities in general.

A loan of **£1950** was made by Trustee Cinzia Delegate & **£200** by Trustee Nico Dattani to the charity to keep funds afloat during donation slow down.
## **Fundraising Activities**
The income generated is predominantly through adoption donations and donations for boarding services of adopted rabbits and guinea pigs.
This year has seen a few more regular donors through the Charity Commission and monthly Standing orders.
Gift Aid this year generated a reimbursement of £815.32 from HMRC.
## **Lush Charity Pot:**
We were fortunate to be nominated by Lush Cosmetics in Paddington as their Grass Root Charity the week of 22 March 2022 to exhibit educational material in store and to help drive adopters considering a rabbit/s as a pet.
The event ran for 1 week and raised £300!
## **Individual fundraisers:**
A sponsored 10 miles walk by a 7 year old little girl raised a staggering amount through her JustGiving public page in support of the rescue. In total we received £1460.
In July 2022 we were recipients of a fundraiser through a JustGiving public page which was run by a 13 year old girl who wanted to do more to help the bunnies. The fundraiser ran from May to July and raised just over £1000 (minus fees).
Extraordinary efforts.
## **Volunteer Support**
It has proven extremely difficult to recruit regular consistent volunteer help however, this year saw a huge take up in short term extracurricular activities by student sectors which have provided the much-needed help.
**Two Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award** placements (3 months each) one starting in Dec 21 the other in Feb 22.
**Multiple local schools sent us Work Experience placements** between July to August. Groups of up to 6 students at a time for a week. Some were a delight to have help whilst others a hindrance and sometimes a challenge.
The week of 1st August we had the absolute pleasure of having a **trainee vet** spend a week with us to build up experience with small animals.
Towards the end of the financial year we recruited 3 adult volunteers to assist on specific days of the week and have proven to be extremely helpful.

## **Review of the Year**
The repercussions of the COVID pandemic have continued to present significant challenges for the animal world, not just rabbits. The unethical pet shops have continued to sell animals despite the crisis the world is experiencing coupled with the opportunistic backstreet breeders, the accidental litters, the neglect/abuse cases, surrenders and animals simply thrown out with the rubbish.
The added factor of the Cost-of-Living crisis has exacerbated a problem which was already out of control.
We were forced to once again close our doors in July 2022 when we reached **59 rabbits** under our care. This is double our capacity for rabbits and doesn’t include the other animals inhouse. We had to focus on reducing the numbers and turn away all new emergencies.
Overall – we have had another tough year but have just about managed to keep things ticking over.
This is a snapshot of the rabbits coming in/out and turned away or rereferred (shown as Additional Requests). There is a clear increase in requests quarter on quarter.
## **Plans for 2022-23**
- Rehome the healthy animals - we are still working our way through the numbers built up in times of crisis.
- Continue to fundraise to cover ongoing vet bills especially with an aging and disabled residence base.
- Recruitment of long term volunteers.
- Assess continuity of rescue activities.
- Further development of marketing and social media strategies.
