## **Message from The Vemoye Foundation’s CEO – Korede Awobowale** 

2020 was an incredibly challenging year for us. We launched on the 26[th] , January 2020, and within a month, the covid-19 pandemic had completely disrupted our initial plan of action. Launching a UK charity focused on Africa during a pandemic, where both international and intranational travel were limited, posed some unique challenges to the Vemoye Foundation but we found a way to adapt our goals and objectives to the global climate we found ourselves in. 

## **What We Did In 2020** 

## _The Launch Event_ 

The launch event was an opportunity for us to bring together heads of the African diaspora community along with CEO and leaders of the African organisations. We had over 50 leaders in attendance. We used this to provide information about the current state of the education system in Africa by bringing thought leaders for our fireside chat. Additionally, we positioned ourselves as the bridge between the diaspora and Africa and spelt out our plan of action to increase access to quality education on the African continent. 

## _Information Dissemination_ 

Due to the limited travel, we harnessed technology to increase awareness and build our network. We launched a podcast series – Africa’s Victors – to engage and educate the African diaspora. The purpose of the podcast was to use true stories to pique the diaspora’s experience so that we can build a community interest in being a part of building the African education system. We found that engagement on our social media increased as a result of this podcast. Building an engaged community is vital for the work Vemoye wants to do. We want to encourage diasporans to use their skills to strengthen the work being done by grassroots African charities so the more active diasporans we can garner, the better. We released 10 episodes on 8 platforms and have had 818 plays to date. 

We also launched a news-based YouTube series called – Triggered – aimed at piquing the interest of the diaspora when it came to current affairs. We wanted to make African politics more accessible to the African diaspora by presenting it in a more digestible manner. We produced 10 episodes and we received over 1000 views.

## **Aims** 

1. Increase impact of pre-existing African-focused educational organisations by filling the skills gap within their organisations. 

2. Increase impact of pre-existing African-focused educational organisations by creating and implementing project plans. 

## _**2021 Goals**_ 

Aim 1 in 2021: We want to have helped 75% of our organisations fill at least 1 skills gap in their organisation by the end of 2021. To reach this goal we need volunteers and organisations. Number of volunteers – 50 professions 

Number of organisations – 10 charities 

Aim 2 in 2021: Work on completing one project by the end of 2021.
