Section C Objectives and activities (11 To advance education for the public benefit of persons living in the London Borough of Southwark in horticuEture and arts and crafts in such ways as Ihe Charity deems fil. {21 To help young people, especially bul not exclusively, through leisure time activities to develop their capabilities so that they may become helpful and productive members oftheir community and wider society. The Charity is a charitable incorporated organisation1118780). The Trustees are satisfied that the Charity's work is undertaken in accordance with the Charity Commission's guidance on public benefit. Summary of the obje¢ts of the charity set out in its governing document The year 2024-2025 was a period of further consolidation and growth for the Charity. During the year ended 31 March 2025 the Charity ran weekly Forest Schools sessions in Nursery and after school clubs and workshops in food growing, arts and crafts and gardening for children and young people in Southwath. Throughout the period 1 April 2024- 31 March 2025 the Charity delivered 105 clubs and workshops with 1,159 attendances (excluding 'unique' atlendancesl over a period of 110 hours. As in previous years, the focus of the Charity's delivery been April 2024 and March 2025 was running clubs for children at Surrey Square School, London, SE17. The growing spaces at Surrey Square School were utilised for all year round growing and art clubs maintained by an Edible Rotherhithe volunteer during the school holidays. Throughout the year the Charity continued to develop and support ils offer for all children from Early Years to Year 5. Summary of the main activities undertaken for the public benefit in relation to these objects (include within this section the statutory declaration that trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit) In June 2024 the Charity incorporated the 'Forest Schools, concept from ad hoc beginnings lo a regular club offer. The follow-on impact of forest schools includes children explaining the activities they have been involved with lo their classmates - simple oracy. Forest School club sessions with Nursery pupils have been replicated and delivered to morning pupils the next day by a teacher from Surrey Square School. All clubs run by the Charity are tailored to the needs of children who attend. both in terms of capability and age. For example, early years and nursery children are taught healthy eating principles, make and take- home simple salads from vegetables grown,. how lo identify insects and other fauna and exploring their habitats,. and artistical first steps in working with clay and other media. Children in all Years are engaged in indoor growing in the Surrey Square school polytunnel. During the period, they were taught root systems of plants and besides growing and planting, worked on nature-based worksheets. Artistic sessions included drawing from nature, print making, making signage, decorating pots, mosaic and collage making, paper- making and making lavender and tie-dyed bags. Funding for Clubs in the period April 2024 to March 2025 came from Team London Bridge, Southwark Neighbourhood Fund and Superzones programrnes. Throughout the period the Charity conducted regular Maintenan of the polytunn81. Children are laught the importance of and gain an appreciation of maintaining orderly growing spaces. Bark is laid and areas are made safer. This is facilitated by a grant from Southwark's Cleaner greener Safer programrne, The Charily continues to give free practical advice to community gardeners on an ad hoc basis. As in previous years, the Charity has held a stall in the Old Kent Road Zone, giving away plants, seeding up bulbs, sunflower seeds and herbs. The Charity engages with at least 30 families at each monthly Old Kent Road family Zone event. The Charity has also been a party to the London conference of the Ministry of Eco Education, delivering two sessions to 54 peop16 in total. Additional details of objectives and actlvltles (Optional inforrnation} The Charity is entirely run by volunteers and has been able to offer a Consistenl level of quality and supervision in its clubs due to ¢ommitmenl from volunteer support of the session tutor. In supporting the employment of a tutor trained at Goldsmiths College, the Charity is proud lo be able to offer work experience to its volunteers and paid ILrtors for their own portfolios, and as hands-on experience for their future careers as educators. The Charity has received commitments for grant funding from local fund&rs and London Borough of Soulhwark for thè year 2025-2026. The Charity Gontinues to run, with the assistance of volunteers, the Thought Press Project. This involves printmakers throughout the UK donating prints free of charge to Thought Press Project, which are then sold both online and at street stalls and fairs, Net proceeds raised are then split with a partner charity with similar ambitions that deliver in the London Borough of Southwark: in 2024 il was Pla 2be. For the year 2025 it is Children's Book Project which redistributes books to children and their families. The Thought Press Project raises between £3,500- £5,000 per annum. Section D Achievements and performance Summary ofthe main achievements of the charity during the year After-school club5 and workshops, Forest School sessions As in previous years, activity clubs are the core work of the Charity. The Charity has further consolidated its reputation within Southwark and with its regular funders for being a quality provider. The Charity's offer has remained consistent with previous years. The Charity conlinues to be Vegetable Advocates for the Food Foundation, members of the 4 in 10 London Child's Poverty Network, Social Farms and Gardens, Old Kent Road Family Zone and the RHS for Schools Community Garden Programme. Expansion of Reach The Charity consults informally on allolment and growing projects. The Early Years and Nursery offèr has been consolidated this year, with a greater variety and depth of engagement, particularly with our forest school offer. Expansion of the outdoor learning area and session tutoring at Surrey Square The Charity maintained and developed its outdoor learning space at Surrey Square School with an enhanced offer of arts-based learning and a planned programme of paper-making and development of skills necessary for production of printed book. As in past years, outdoor learning provided by the Charity has developed into the basis of classroom-based discussion and learning. Partnerships Throughout the period the Charity conlinued to work with Team London Bridge and Southwark Council, despite constrainls on funding generally. Bolh organisalions remain supportive of the Charity's work. Th8 Charity also enjoys strong relationships with Good Gym Soulhwark and Hands on London. Public Recognition During Ihe year 2024-2025 Surrey Square School (via the Charity) has been awarded RHS levels l and 2 School Gardening Awards. The Level 2 Award recognises the children's understanding of the importance of the environmenl, food growing, biodiversity and sustainability while developing life-skills such as teamwork, resilien and onfidence, and improving physical and mental well-being. Section E Financial review The policy of the Trustees of th8 Charity is to relain monies in reserve for use in the event of emergencies or to cover cashflow liabilities resulting from delays in grant payments, which can occur when grants are awarded in tranches and reporting is required.
