The Trustees present their Annual Report and accounts of the Marafiki TTUSt for the year
8nded 31 Dscember 2025.
Structure, governance and managemént
Structure
Mardfikl Trust, also known as MT (the Charity) is registered with the Charity Commlssion
with charity number 1187949. The Charity was origlnally formed In December 2019 and
became a registered charity on 13 February 2020.
Govemanco and Management
The Trustees manage the affalrs of the Charity. The Trustees who held office durlng the
year are listed on page 2.
The Trustees confirm that they have complied with the duty in section 4 of the Charities Act
2006 to have due regard io the Charity Commission's general guidan￿ on public benefit.
'Charilies and Public Benefit,.
The Charlty does not have any employees. The Truste8s carry out all day-to.day
management of the Charity.

Mar8fiki Trust was born out of a desire on the part of Its founding Trustees (Nlcola and Llz)
to support projects in Kenya to provide education and facilities for disadvantsged groups of
children living in poverty in the slum areas of Nairobi. On a trsp through Afiic£ in 2016. Ihey
met the founders of a then Community Based Organisation - Real Hope Community Youth
Oryanlsation ('RHYCO )- who are now formerfy registered in Kenya as a 'company limited
by guarantee, (Real Hope Communlty Foundatlon (RHCFJ) and subsequent visits
cemented 8 deep friendship. In December 2022. Trustee (Becky) visited Kenya as a sponsor
and after a successful trip was invited to become a third Trustee of the Charity. In addition to
RHCF, Ihe Tnjstees help to fund another project - Joyful Hearts Centre

('JHC) 8stablished to support a small group of ¢hildr8n with ￿rebral palsy. who are based
within the same compound ('Bella Ciao'} as RHCF.
A highlight for 2025 was the visit from RHCF Founder and Dlrector Bonface Muthlora
('Bubba') to the UK in April. Bubba spent Iwo weaks travelling the length and breadth of
England (and 8V8n slipping in a quick viskt to Walesl) meeting donors, supporters and
sponsors. He was generously hosted by so many people and gave talks in several
residential, school and other organisations, venues. The visit was an enormous success.

From tlme to tlme, the Ch8rlty supports Indlwduals outside of the programmes at RHCF and
JHC. This year th8 Charity continued to support Steve Maina (aged 26). a RHCF volunteer,
to access Hlgh School through an adult educalion programme. Steve successfully
completed Yrs 314 at the end of 2025 and obtained his High School certificate. In addition,
this year the Charity began supporting one of the RHCF security guards. Joseph Babion
Kilua. on the path to train as a soual w0￿er.
As part of thè Kenyan Govemment's 'Care Reforms, as provided for in the Children's Act
2022, the respite saf8 hous8 at Bella Clao Is required to reintegrate children within 3 years of
arrival unless they remain there under court protection. RHCF began a progrdmme of
reintegration in January 2024. initially targeting 20 children. In De￿mber 2024. after a highly

successful govemment directed (bul not funded) programme of reintegration (recognised by
the local Children's Department as a pilot and benchm8rk for other institutions), 18 Ghildren
began their new lives in either fostsr or kinship care or in some cases were ￿tUMed to
parents who had been empoweréd through the scheme. A further 14 children were
reintegrated in 2025. The lengthy process involves 7 stages beginning with idenlification,
assessment. tracing, case planning, implementation and reintsgration as the team continues
to monitor and evaluate the home-based care of all the children.
Trustee Liz and her husband Nick (a rellred Maths teacher) continue to visit Kenya for 54
months of the year, vthere they are Involved in various 8Ctlvltles at the cenlre Including
supportlng educational and extra-curricular programmes. Liz coordinates. and when in
Kenya hosts, visitors and volunteers. accompanies staff on home. sch(yJl and reintegration
visits and throughout the year liaises with sponsors and donors in the UK through termly
correspondence. Nick has been volunteering at a local school as well as tutoring maths and
physics, coachlng chess and Instlgating Rummlkub matches 8t Bella Ciao.
Tutoring at Bella Ciao has gon8 from st￿ngth to strength with volunteers from Kenya and
around the world supplementing the work of the paid teaching slaff. So many children have
gaps in their education due to absen￿, trauma and large class sizesllack of individual
attention. Sharon Land, previously a tutor in Ihe US for over 40 years. now residing In Kenya
wlth her daughter and f8mlly, continues to tutor regularly twice a week working wlth chlldren
in need of educatlonal support.
The Bella Clao premlses continua to be home to a growing business {'Eco Gla88 Gallery,)
which recycles glass bottles tuming them into glasses. bowls, windchimes and other
ornaments. The team, headed by Ken, provides opportunities for youth empowam8nt and
another exciting extracurrlcular activity for the children. Thls year, the team bullt. elched and
later stocked 8 flsh tank (suitably named 'The M8ra'flsh'kl Tank? In the centre
The Now Clty Networks (NCN - 8 US charity) muslc programme at B8118 Ciao goes from
strength to strength, empowering local youths in teaching music and dance and providing
year-round entertalnment for visitors. A number of RHCF beneficiaries participated in
music festival in Eldoret in 2025 Comlng home with no less than 8 Irophles and placed in
Se￿nd place In the Country. A new NCN inltlative this year 'Béds for Hope, saw the
introduction of a bed bullding project providing beds for families in n88d. Each bed is
sponsored by a donor in the US and provides employment for youths in the community.
The Charity funded a hugely successful disability awareness tralning week for siblings of
JHC beneflclarl8s eady in the year which was followed by similar training sessions for RHCF
children in the holidays before Christmas.
The work in JHC is cxjntinuing to have a profound impact. One of the beneficiaries of the
outreach occupational therapy programme ('Amiani' . pIdu￿d on the front cover) graduated
from malnstream pr&school last year 8nd is now in Grade 1. JHC works closely with the
RAFA Institulo of Dlsablllty Caro Sludles who provide Intems who train al the centre. A
number of organisations visited JHC Ihroughout the year induding Chang8 A Llfe and
Bethany Klds who fitted and supplied over 20 children with new wheelchairs.
Two ent￿pronoUrial beneficiaries. Alvin and Ishm881 IwFth the help of the RHCF social
worker Sam Ngugi) set up a mandazi (doughnut) business in the long holidays to raise
money to support thelr families.

Of the 140+ chi5d￿n in Ihe RHCF programme at the end of the year, 75 children had
be￿een them 80 UK Sponso￿ through the Charity wth a number of children dual
sponsored as they approached. loin8d and continued High Schtsjl in January. The
remainlng chlldren at Balla Ciao are sponsored through Intematlonal Needs Canada
flNCAJ and through RHCF direct (with support from other individual intemational donors and
the Marula Green Market (fornierly Oryanlc Famws Market) in Karen. Nairobi, Kenya).
Initially, RHCF sponsorship in the UK was £20 per month (with Grtt Aid ￿ere appropriate)
and JHC full sponsorship was £40 per month. During 2023. the Charity increased
sponsorship to £251£50 (dual) per month (with Gift where appropriate) for any new
sponsors1spons0￿d chlldren.
Of the 12 children registered at JHC. 1 child has a lull £40 monthly sponsorship, and 3
children have part sponsors at £20 per month.
with recent changes to Kenya's educatlon system, th8 Truslees are priorilising dual
sponsorship for children transitioning to Junlor Secondary School IJSS) and later to Senlor
Secondary School ISSS). many of which are boarding institutions. As of January 2024,
children now move from Grade 6 (Pfimaryl directly into JSS (Grades 7-9), followed by SSS
{Grad8s 10-121. The Charity continues to seek Gommrtted sponsors to help children thriv8 in
this new academic landscape. 2024 saw ￿ beneficiaries successfully complete their High
School education with Blessing achieving an impresslve overall B+ grade. Both hope to
continue on to tertiary education, and the Charity is exploring ways of supporting their
beneficiaries in fulfilllng their dreams through setting up a Tertiary Support Fund.
The RHCF and JHC children have written to their sponsors three times this year and
sponsors are kept regularly up to date wilh photos of their sponsored children through email
and WhatsApp. The Trustees facilitste 8 letter exchange programme and deliver gifts when
they vlslt. At th8 8nd of the year, In additlon to receiving letters, sponsors received reports on
their children's progress at school. Imth the help of one of its generous sponsors, Vlnc8
Haywood, the Charity Continues to fvnd monthly Jolnt birthday partles for all the chlldren
having a birthday in the given month.

Bella Ciao continues to offer ￿SpIte re$identl81 cara In the fonn of a safe house for those
children for whom home lrfe becomes unacceptsbly drficulL The safe house was designed
to accommodate up to 25 children to be cared for by a resident housemother and
housefather. Due to a shortage of institutions in the Kawangware area, the local Children's
Department deemed the Gentre could hold 40 children. At the end of 2025. there were 40
children residing at Bella Ciao, and in addition RHCF has a small baby unit hosting up to 5
babies at any one time. Bella Ciao also includes accommc*Jation for a residont social worker
and his family. a dininglmeeting hall, a library and classrooms, wash facilities and toilets,
kitchen and laundry facilitie5, offiGe5 and a playroom alongside accommodation for

volunteers, whiGh it is hoped will continue to generate incorne as well as providing an
immersive experience for volunteers.
JHC continues to operate Independenlly within separate accommodation in the Bella Ciao
compound with both groups benefiting hugely from th8 interaction bebN88n th8 childran and
economies of scale and staff overfap.
Plans are at the final stage to purchase neighbouring land to develop more permanent
buildings to house JHC and the RHCF dormitories in the first phase. Long tern ambitious
plans and developments include a complete rebulldlng of the enllre compound.

The Trustees desire a 'hands on. approach to their support and giving to RHCF and JHC
and want to ensure that their donations are m8ximisèd without OV8rheads in the UK. The
Tru5tee8 ensure that 811 donation5 and grants are used for the charltable purposes they ar8
intended for. The Trustees cover all administration expenses in the UK e.g. the website
hosting fee, and they personally cover all axpenses (including travel, accommodalion and
food) relating to any trips they makè to Kenya.
During the purchase process, links belween RHCF and the owners of the Marula Orngn
Market (ftimlerly Organlc Farmers Market) grew 8nd evolved such that prlmary school
and JSS fees are being met by MGM as well 8s fundlng of the baby unlt, an addltlonal
t8acher's salary and a signfficant weekly conlribulion towards fruil and vegetables. RHCF
volunteers ar8 employed at the Saturday and Sunday markets and offer car parking, h05ting
and set up as well as running a children's activty area.
The Kajatawa Foundatlon has conllnued to donate £1000 per month towards the Charlty'8
share of the running costs at Bella Clao as well as providlng One￿ support for the 2025
relntegratlon programme. This CA)mmltment has bean invaluable in securing stability for the
Charivs monthly contributions which inevitably ¢ontinu8 to rise as numbers of children
increase alongside rises in the cost of living in Kenya.
Ros and Ted Sulllvan and thelr daughter Nlcola have generously donated funds for
counselling from a fund set up in memory of their daughterlsister Emma.
Sponsor and tutor, Sharon Land facilitated the building of a house for an RHCF beneficiary
up in the Westem part of Kenya after he lost his home when his grandmolher passed away.
The Hllton Internatlonal Dèvélopmént Trust also provlded significant fundlng towards the
reintegration programme.
The Hughes family (Connor, Sohna and Amina) made a hugely generous unrestricted
donation following a visit from Bubba in April and American Orthodontics donated fijrther
signifficant unrestricted funds at Chrislmas.
A fundraiser set up by the Charity for medlcal needs early in the year was hugely Suc￿$fUl.

In January. Oundle resident Jean Clark celebrated her 90th birthday by completing a
sponsored zip wire challenge to raise signfficant fvnds for the Charity.
St Anthony House (Oundlo School) took part in the annual sponsored Santa Run at
Burghley House in December to raise significant funds.
A Charity Yea and s¢J)nes' event with Peterborough Flut8 Choir in July was enjoyed by
visitor5 to Wadenhoe.
John wh￿he contlnues to make regular donations from Wadenhoe vegetable sales.
Volunteers, Aice and Lucy raised funds for lacrosse equipment in advance of their visit with
surplus funds donated to the Charity.
Trustee, Nlcola fundrais8d for the Charlty through blrthday donatlons for her 60th blrthday
thls year and also through maklng dog treats at Chrlstmas.
Oundle Stronglands Yoga group made a donation from fundraising in 2025.
Trustee, Llz held a pop up shop sale in her village selllng items brought back from Kenya as
well as items donated by Margaret Hunter ('MaNellous Margaret,).
A partnership wlth UK based Specs for Africa has seen the delivery and distribution of
reading and sunglasses to staff. parents and members of the wider community.
Helen and lain Russell held Iheir fourth fabulous tennls toumament funclraiser in September
ralsing nearly £1000 and Ellza Weeks ran a marathon fundraiser In Llsbon in October raislng
over £5000.
Doug Northwood made a generous donatlon towards the purchase of addltional books for
the Bella Ciao academic library.
Sponsor Sue Greenwood ralsed funds In memory of her mother who sadly passed away this
year.
Tho Christmas appo81 this ygar was to raise funds to pay for all tho childron and their
families to attend a Christmas party where they We￿ given a food voucher for the fvstive
Season.
Throughout the year, fijnds have been recelved through 'Give Ss You Llve. customers
nominating th8 Charity.
The Charity has also received generous donations and support from Oundle Rotary Club,
LI￿ Valley Rotary Club, Oundle Town Football Club. Hudson Trust and Oundle School.
The Trustees would like to express their huge appreciation to all our supporters, child
sponsors and donors without whom this valuable work would not have been possible.

The volunteer programme grows from strength to strength with extsnded visits from Lily,
Tizz, Lou, Lyla, Hana, Harry, Karlos, Max. Katrien. AIIc8 and Lucy as well as olher day
visitors throughout the year from the UK including pupils and staff from Oundle School,
Ann8 and Peter Corder from Specs for Afrlca, Medina from IRISI, Tilch. Christabelle and
Rhoda from Kivull.

Financlal Revlew 2025
Tolal income re￿Ived during the p8riod was £98,143. Totsl expendlture during the perfod
was £68.124, includlng grants of £63,749 to RHCF end £2.522 to JHC.
As a result. the Charity has generated a net surplus of £30.019.
As a registered charity marari￿ Trust 15 exempt from corporatlon tax and income tax on
charit8bl8 acllvsties.
Donors In Canada (through INCA) continue to be the major supporters of JHC. Marafiki
Trust contlnues to S8nd £100 sponsorshlp monies per month which is donated specifically
for JHC children. as well as funding the occupational therapist at JHC.
R•8erve8 Pollcy
The Truslees. policy aims to maintain a sufficient level of general reserves to enable the
Charity to continue to support at least three months, running costs in the general RHCF and
JHC Funds. In addition, the Charity holds monies allocated for unrestricted Marafiki Trust
use. The estlmated free reserves r8quired, on a prudent basis, is £12.000.
As at 31 De￿mber 2025. the Charity hald £3,415 In unrestricted reserves allocated to
Marafiki Trust. and an additional £17.453 unrestricted except to RHCF and JHC.
Risk A8se8smont
The Trustees regularly monitor risks at each meeting. The cost of living In Kenya has
continued to rise significantly. Th8 exchange rate has fluctuated considerably.

The Future
Following a period supporting growth In numbers of children, supporting staff and the
acquiring of premises, over the next year or so, the Charity will continue to consolidate its
efforts to ensure its long term sustainable support ofthe children in the RHCF and JHC
programmes. The emphasis has a￿yS been upon quality provision and the limits pla￿d on
new children joining the centre until sponsors (and future dual sponsors) are secured for all
existing children will remain in plac8. Fundraising partners {INCA) in Canada have secured
funding to purchase a sm811 plece of land adlacent to Bella Clao to facllitate larger premises
for JHC and build belter boarding facilities as they and the Charity continue to fundraise to
meet ever increasing running costs whilst also fundraising to develop facilities over the
ming years.

Unrestricted Marafiki: Fundswith no restriction otherthan forthe Charity, i.e.. could be
used fora project otherthBn RHCF orJHC. The Charityaimsto keep a minimum of £500
in thisfund for unforeseen issueslprolects.
Unrestricted RHCFJHC: Funds that Can be u8ed for any aspect of RHCF or JHC
RHCF child sponsorship: Funds donated specificallyfor RHCF children sponsored by
individuals {£20 or 251month per child). Most donors give monthlythough some donate
annuaLiy so there is money carried forward each month.
RHCF general: Funds ralsed for any aspect of RHCF but notJHC orother projects.
JHC child sponsorship: Funds donated specificallyforJHC chlldren spon80red by
individuals {£401month per child divided b8tween two sponsors)

Peru Fundraiser. Funds raised 8peoificallyfor 8 child in Giwlwho needs additional
supportfor8econdary school. She is personally known to the Trustees through Giigii
Special School,Thls 8UPPOrt has now ended 80 Outstanding fundswere transferred to
the secondaryeducatlon fund.
Reintegr8tion: Funds r8ised 8peci8lLy to help with the programme to reintegrate
children who have been 8t8yingat Bella Ciao back into kinship care, foster care or back
to their families.
