ended 31 December 2023.
Structure, governance and management
Stru¢turo
Marafiki Trust, also known as MT (the Charity) is registered with the Charity Commission
with charity number 1187949. The Charity wa5 originally fonned in Dec8mber 2019 and
became a registered charity on 13 February 2020.
Governanco and Manag•ment
The Trustees manage the affairs of the Charity. The Trusle8s who held office during the
year are Ilsted on page 2. Becky Smllh was formally reglstered wlth the Charlty Commission
as a Trust88 in February 2023,
The Trustees confirm that thay have complied with the duty in sèction 4 of the Charities Ad
2006 to have due regard to the Charity Commission's general guidance on publiG benefit,
'Charities and Public Beneflt,.
The Charity does not hava any employees. The Trustees carry out all day to d8y
management of the Charlty.
Objects
The prevention and relief of povety in Kenya or tha UK by providing: grants, items 8nd
services to individuals in need andlor charities and other organisalions working to prevent or
relieve povety andlor provide educational opportunities.

Marafiki Trust was bom out of a desire on th8 part of Its founding Trustees (Nicola and Liz)
to support projects in Kenya to provide education and facilities for disadvantaged groups of
children living in poverty in the slum ar8as of Nairobi. On a trip through Afric8 in 2016. the
founding Trustees met the founders of a Communtty Based Organisation - Real Hope
Ctynmunity Youth Oryanlsation ('RHYCO?- who are now formerly registerod in Kenya as
a 'company limited by guarantee. (Real Hope Communlty Foundatlon (RHCFJJ and
subsequent visits cemented a deep friendship. In De￿mber 2021, new TNstee (Becky

Smith) visited Kenya as a sponsor and after a suc￿Ssful trip was invited to become a thlrd
Twstee of the Charity. In addition to RHCF, the Trustees help to fund a small
project - Joyful Hearts Centre fJHC? estsblished to support a small group of children with
rebral palsy, who are based within the same o)mpound as RHCF.
The Trustees desire a 'hands on. approach to their support and giving to RHCF and JHC
and want to ensure that their donations are maximised wthout overheads in tho UK. The
Trustees ensure that all donations and grants are used for the charitable purposes they are
intended for. The Trustees cover all administration expenses in the UK e.g. the website
hosting fe8. and th8 Trustees personally cover all expenses (including travel.
accommodation and food) relating to any trips they make to Kenya.
The Trustees have been delighted to contlnue with r8gular visits to Kenya in 2023 and to
expand the volunteer programme for sponsors and supporters of all ages.

Of the 126 chlldren In the RHCF proar8mme atthe end ofthe year, 66 children had UK
sponsors through the Charity with 7 children dual sponsored as they continu8dlwer8 due to
b8gin High School in January 2024. The r8malnlng chlldren arè sponSo￿d
through Intematlonal Needs Canada (INCA) and through RHCF dlrect (with 8UPPOrt from
other Indlvtdual Intsmational donors and th8 Organlc Farn7ers Market (OFM) In Karen,
Nairobi. Kenya). Inltlally, RHCF sponsorship in the UK was £20 per month (with Gift Aid
where appropdatel and JHC full spon8orshlp was £40 par month. Durlng 2023, the Charlty
increased sponsorshlp to £25 per month (wlth Gtft Ald wh8r8 approprlate) for any new
sponsorslsponsored children.
Of the 12 children registered at JHC, 1 child has a full £40 monthly sponsorship and 3
children have part sponsors at £20 per month.
The Trustees continued to seek sponsors for the JHC children and to look for more sponsors
for new RHCF children needing tojoln th8 progrdmme wilh priority being given to securing
dual sponsorship for those children at Ihe top end of Primary School heading to High School
(in th8 old educatlonal system). From January 2024, children will no longer transition to High
School but instead will move from Primary to Junlor Secondary School at the end of Grade 6
and it Is 8ntlclp8t8d from JSS to boardlng Senior Secondary Schools either after Grade 8 or
9. This is still awaiting clarification from the Kenyan Government's Education Department.
The RHCF chlldren have written to their sponsors tw1￿ this year and sponsors are kept
regularly up to date with photos of their sponsored children through email and WhatsApp.
The Trustees facilitate a18tter exchange programme and deliver gifts when they visit. At the
end of the year. in addibon to recetving letters and Christsnas decorations. sponsors
recetved reports on their children's progress at school. With the help of one of its sponsors.
the Charity funds monlhly joint birthday parties for all the children having a birthday in the
given month.

'Home is not 8 p18ce, its a feeling., Cecilia Ahem
On 19 October 2022, upon expiry of their 2-year tenancy of premises ('Bèlla Ciao,) in
Kawangware, the RHCF team. having renovated and refurbished these spaaous exdusiv6
use premises. were able to purchase Bella Ciao with pr(pbono legal support provided by
Kenyan child-focused leg81 group ('Legal Sisterf). Funding was provided jointly by INCA and
the Charity. INCA'S share was funded by one donor. After cL)nsid8rable fundraising efforts
wlth events and donations and a slzaabla grdnt from the Kajatawa Foundation, th8 Charity
was able to raise over half of its share of the purchase price (which Including legal fees and
stamp duty equated to £117, 601.83). The remainder of the requlred purchase funds
(£50.000) were loaned (Interest free) to the Charity by a donor who wishes to protect their
identity and is to be rep8id as soon as possible. By 31 Decemb8r 2023. Ihe Chartty had
successfully rapaid £21,000 with £29.000 remaining to be repaid.
Bella Ciao continues to offer respite residential care in the fonn of a safe house for those
Chlldren for whom home lrfe bewmes unacceptably difficult. Th8 safe house was designed
to accommodate up to 25 ¢hildran to be cared for by a resident housemother and social
worker. Due to a shortage of Institutions In th8 K8wangw8re area, the local Children's
Departm8nl detemilned the centre could hold 40 children. At the end of 2023, thare were 33
chlldren resldlng al Bella Clao. although in the prevlous w88ks an emergency caused by a
fire in a nelghbourlng centre, $8W the premlses 8t full cap8city. In addltlon to the safe house,
the premises Include aC￿mMOdatiOn for a resident social worker and his family as well
as Iwo security guards, a dininglmeetlng hall. a library and classrooms. wash facllltlas and
toilets, kitchen and laundry facilities, officas and a playroom alongslde accommodation for
volunteers, whlch it is hoped will continue to generate income as well as providing an
immersive experien￿ for volunteers.
JHC Continues to operat8 independently within separate accommodation in the Bella Ci80
compound with both groups benefiting hugely from the Inter8Ctlon between the children and
economie$ of scale and staff overlap.

During the purthase process. links between RHCF and the owners of OFM grew and
evolved such that primary school and JSS fees are being mat as well as a signifi¢anl vmkly
contributlon towards fruit and vegetables. This has been an immense help in 8n8bling the
Charity to focus on raising funds for tha purchase of and repayment of the loan for Bella
Ciao, alongslde the other running costs. OFM has purchased other items for the centre
including a much needed land appreciated by the Housemother Lucy) washlng machine.
RHCF volunteers are employed at the Saturday and Sunday markets and offer car parking.
hosting and set up as well as running a children's activity area.
From March 2021- February 2024, the Sullivan family through The Emma Sulllvan
Trust. have kindly financed the prowsion of counselling ServI￿S through the Charity for the
RHCF and JHC children. staff. parents and volunteers. A counselling room set up and
the professional services of a trained counsellor conlinue to be available thr8e days per
week. The Trustees are delighted to be able to support this important and essential servi
and hugely graleful to Ihe Sullivan family who have conb'nued to support it.

At the start of the year. local and UK volunteers, staff and older children undertook
sponsored Hlke for Yi8al Hope. through the Ngong Hills raising over £2500 to support the
running costs of Bella Ciao.
The 2022 Christrnas appeal enabled all the children to rèknrn to school in January in new
tracksuits.
Fifleen childr8n joined school for the first time in January 2023 after spending time in the
drop-in centr8. This would not have been possible without engaging new sponsors to
support their education.
An 'Educatlon81 Empowerment. JustGlvlng donadon page enabled the second of the
Charitys Sponsored children to graduate to High School, where fees and boarding
requirern8nts are significantly more than can be ralsed through a singl& sponsorship. The
Charity decided to focus on looking for dual sponsors for its two High School sponsored
children and for the five preparing for High SchcM)l in 2024.
Two fomer pupils from Oundle School (Rosanna Close-smith and Clemmie Senior) held a
charity hockey match in February and raised over £1500 for the Charity.
The Charlty was dellghted to be featured for a s8cond time In the popular Oundl•
Llfe magazine.
April saw the onllne Marafiki E8Ster Duck Race raise over £300.
In Aprll. th8 Charity began to fundralse for a 16 year old in Gilgil town vhjo vms bom with
spina bifida and hydrocephalus. Her single-mother is unable to fund her High School speci81
needs education and bursary funding in Kenya is limited. It is planned for her to start school
in JanLsary 2024.
A huge thank you to chlld sponsor, Bob Cheatham of VlcsGlgs 8nd Stevle Jones who put
together a Ch8rity Acoustlc Showc8se at The Talbot Hotel in May raising nearly £SOO.
A pupll at Welllngborough School, Rory Hunt and hls Hous6 mates from Crlpps
House raised over £1200 at their sponsored rowing event.
The Charity has also recelved generous donatlon$ from Nancy's Yogi's, Oundle Rotary
Club. Ufflngton Prlmary School s Treasure Hunt. Tansor bak8rs, Howard Russell
Constructlon and Chancerygate. Oundle School Music Departmenl, Kenton College•
Nalrobi (who funded food parcels and Christmas gifts directly).
A generous donation of Clothes enabled Laura and Sarah Hector to raise funds through
Vinted sales and a dothes sale in Tallington In the Autumn.
Vince Hayward has made regular addltlonal donatlons and now funds the Charfty's share of
monthly birthday parties. In June, he generously recelved gifts In Ileu of birthday presents
raising nearty £3000 at his &ithday Bash..
A Charity 'tea and scones, event with Peterbornugh Flute Cholr in JUEY vms enjoyed by
visitors to W8denhoe.
Congratulations to Jacob Dillarstone and Hannah Lewis who tied the knot in July and chose
the Charity as on8 of three charittes to re￿1ve donalions in lieu of gifts.

The Kajatawa Foundatlon generously donated £5.000 arKJ the Charity also received a
donation of £350 from the Hudson Trust
St James. Place provided a grant for the reintegration programme which RHCF will embark
upon in 2024. Bella Ciao is a respite safe house and not a children's orphanage or
permanent home. The Kenyan Govemment's Children's Department requires that RHCF
children are considered for reintegration back to their homes with parents. 8Xtended family
or in some cases kinshiplcommunity based care. Thls wlll be a long process requlrlng
careful implementation to @nsure children are kept safe.
Helen and lain Russell held the second fabulous tennis toumament fundraiser in September
raising over £1000 and Susie Valentine-Pyl8 and her husband cycled from London to
Brighton raising neady £1200.
Olivia Blakey laka 'Mamma Shoes) and husband Chris I'B8bb8 Sho&g) facilitated huge
donations of hundreds of pairs of shoes and toys for Christmas whllst out working In Kenya.
The Chrbstmas appeal thls year was to ralse furKls to pay for all the Charivs sponsored
chlldr8n to 8nloy a fi8ld trlp to Lake Nekuru whlch took place on 8 December wlth Twstees,
Becky and Liz able to attend too.
The Amerl¢an Orthodonllc$ donated in excess of £10,000 in De￿mber as part of
their annual Christrnas givlng programme.
Throughout the year, funds have been recewed through 'Give as You Live. customers
nomlnatlng th8 Charlty.
The Trusteeg would like to express their huge appreciation to all our supporters, chlld
sponsors and donors wthout whom thls valuable work would not have been possible.

The volunteer programme grew from strenglh to st￿nath with extended visits from Caroline
Andrews, Chrlstsbelle Nlcholls, Sara the dentist and friend Annabelle {both from Spain}, Lily
Bery, Annette Bery. Hope Dillarstone, Will Varcoe, Amanda Lovett and Nic Cunliffe, Polly
Potter, Archie Atkinson. Rachel Barritt, Nick Turnbull and visits from pupils and staff
from Oundle School in October and Healing Little Hearts in November.

Marafikn Trusl was so fulfflling and left me with such admiration and love for the amazing

Totsl income r￿1Ved during the period was £TT.389. Total expenditure during the period
v￿$ £56.358, including grants of £35.040 to RHYCO and £1,303 lo JHC. totsling £36,343.
Included in the gr8nts totsl is the ongolng repayment of the108n whlth financed the
purchase of the Bella Ciao premises. £17,000 has been paid off this year. wth £29.01)0
outstanding.
As a r8sult, the Charity has generated a net profit of £21.033.
As a registered charity Marafiki Trust is exempt from Wpofdtion tsx and ino)me tax on
charitable activities.
Donors In Canada (through Intemational Needs Canada) contlnue to be the major
supporters of JHC. Marafiki Trust contlnues to send £100 sponsorship monies per month
which is donated specifically for JHC children.
Re$erve8 Poll¢y
The Truste89' po15cy sims to m81ntaln a sufficient level of general reseNes to enable the
Charity to continue to support at least three months. runnlng cosls In the general RHCF and
JHC Funds. In addition, the Charity holds monles allocat8d for unr8Strlcted Marafiki Trust
Usè. Thè estlmated free reserves requlred, on a prudent basls. is £5,000. A £SOOO donation
was received in mid-December which was spent in January 2024, but elevated th8 end of
year free reserve8 figure.
As at 31 De￿mber 2023. the Charity held £11,315 of unrestricted reseNes and £390, in the
RHCF and JHC gener81 funds.
Rl8k Ass888mant
Th8 Trustees regularfy monitor risks at each meeting. The cost of living in Kenya has
continued to ri88 significantly. The exchange rats has fluctuated consid8rably.
Tho Futur•
Following a period supporting growth in numbers of children. supporting staff and the
acquiring of premises, over the next year or so. the Charity will be consolidating its efforts to
ensure its long term sustainable support of the RHCF and JHC programmes. The emphasis
has always been upon qu81ity provision and the cap placed on no new children joining the
centre until sponsors {and future dual sponsors) are secured for all existing children will
remain in place. Our fundraising partn8rs (INCA) in Canada are working on fundraising to
purchase a small piece of land adjacent to Bella Ciao to facilitate larger premlses for JHC
and bulld better boardlng fadlilles as Ihe Charity continues to fundraise to meet ever
increasing running costs and to pay off the loan secured to purchase Bella Ciao.

The significant accounting policies applied in the preparation of these fin8nci81
statements 8re set out below.
Ch8rlty Informatlon
The financial statements are prepared on a going concern basis and are
presented in sterlingwhich is the functional currency of the Charity.
Funds
Unrestricted funds are available for use atthe discretion ofthe Trustees in
furtherance ofthe general objectives of the Charityand which have not been
designated for other purpose8.
Designated funds comprlse unrestricted fundsthat have been set aslde bythe
Trustees for particular purposes. The aim and use of each designated fund is set
out in the notes to the financial 8t8tements.
Restricted funds ar8 funds which are to b8 Used in accordance with the specific
restrictions imposed by donors orwhich have been raised bythe Charity for
partlcular purposes. The cost of ralslng8nd admlnlsterlng such funds are
charged against the specific fund. The aim and use of each restricted fund 18 8et
out In the note8 to the financlal 8tatement8.
Income reeognltlon
All Incomlng resources are Included In the Recelpts and P8yment8 Account
when the Charity recelves the cash or monies directly into Its account.
Donated profession8l services are recognised in income at their fair value i.
The amountthe Charitywould be willingto pay in the open market for such
facilities and services. Acorresponding amount is recognised in expenditure. No
amount Is included in the finanGlal statements forvolunteertime.
Exp8ndlture recognltlon
All expenditure is accounted for on a cash basis and has been classlfled under
headings that aggregate all costs related to the category.
Support costs
Support costs are those that assistthe work of the Charitybut do not directly
repre8ent charitable activities and include administrative costs. They are
Incurred dlrectly In support of expenditure on the objects ofthe Charity.
