## **Welcome from Donna**

It is my privilege to present the Chair’s Report for the year ending 28 February 2025. The past year has shown how Feathers Futures can continue to adapt and grow while staying true to our values.

Feathers House has truly come into its own as a thriving hub where women feel safe, supported, and part of a community. It has become a place of kindness, belonging, and opportunity, where women know their voices will be heard and respected. Alongside the support we provide directly, we are proud that other organisations also now deliver services from Feathers House, ensuring women can access a wide range of help in a place they trust.

Although our income has remained steady rather than increasing this year, we are pleased to have been able to maintain and continue the wide range of services women rely upon. In many ways, this is an achievement to be celebrated in such a challenging financial climate. What has grown is the breadth of what we do and the depth of our impact. We have expanded opportunities for peer support, strengthened our volunteer pathway, and continued to ensure that women’s voices are at the centre of our work. A core strength of Feathers Futures remains our independence. As a local, women-led charity, we are shaped by and accountable to the women who use our services. Their experiences and aspirations guide us, ensuring that we live our values of respect, compassion, and collaboration in everything we do.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has played a part in Feathers Futures this year. To our staff team, for their dedication and commitment to living our values each day. To our volunteers and peer mentors, who so generously share their time, energy, and lived experience. To our trustees, who give their guidance and governance with care. To our funders, partners, and local businesses, whose support ensures we can sustain and grow our reach. And to the women who walk through our doors, you are the heart of Feathers Futures, and your courage and resilience inspire us every day.

Looking ahead, we will continue to build on this year’s achievements, keeping women’s voices at the centre of all we do, increasing our reach, and strengthening our role as an independent, values-led charity at the heart of the community.

## **Achievement and Performance**

Each year we reflect back on how we have grown, developed and continued to deliver support and activities that respond to the needs of the women in our community, this year is no different. As always, we remain deeply proud to be run by women in Great Yarmouth, for women in Great Yarmouth. Our work is grounded in lived experience, trust, and a trauma-informed, person-centred approach that puts the women we support at the heart of everything we do.

Feathers House has really come into its own this year; it’s now a busy, thriving women’s centre where so much is happening under one roof. It’s become a safe and welcoming space where women know they can come and get the support they need, not just from us but from lots of other brilliant organisations too. We now have a range of statutory and voluntary services delivering from Feathers House, which means women can access a whole range of support in a place they trust. It’s made a real difference to how joined-up things feel, and it’s lovely to see women popping in, staying for a chat, going to appointments, or just feeling like it’s their space. That’s exactly what we always hoped it would be, a place full of kindness, belonging, and mutual support, where women feel respected, understood, and truly part of something.

This year we have responded to enquiries from 607 women, delivered groups and activities to 518 women, provided placements to 7 student counsellors who, between them, completed over 800 hours of counselling, trained 24 volunteers with lived experience to support the charity, as well as continue to run our very busy toiletries bank.

We have made significant strides in strengthening our volunteer pathway, reflecting our deep commitment to valuing and supporting women with lived experience. We have designed a clear, structured journey for volunteers from first contact to meaningful, long-term involvement and introduced a new model of volunteer support that combines practical training, emotional wellbeing, and regular supervision. A key highlight has been the training of 29 in total accredited peer mentors, who completed their Level 3 qualification in Mentoring Women with Complex Needs, equipping them with the skills and confidence to support others through trauma-informed, person-centred approaches. In recognition of the critical role volunteers play in our charity, we chose to put ourselves forward for Investing in Volunteers accreditation, and we are now nearing the end of that rigorous process. Undertaking this assessment has been a powerful opportunity to strengthen our volunteer infrastructure, ensuring robust systems, good governance, and best practice are in place so every volunteer feels valued, safe, and supported.

Over the past year, we have continued to amplify the voices of women in our community through our active involvement in Community Voices for the Integrated Care Board (ICB) and our ongoing health research partnership with the University of East Anglia (UEA). These collaborations have enabled us to directly influence conversations around healthcare provision, ensuring that the lived experiences of women in Great Yarmouth; particularly those facing multiple disadvantages, are not only heard but acted upon. Through co-designed research, workshops with student midwives, and involvement in regional health forums, we are pushing forward in addressing the deep-rooted health inequalities that disproportionately affect the women we support. Our work in this space is rooted in trust, accessibility, and a trauma-informed approach. ensuring that systemic change starts with the voices and needs of the community.

We are proud of the difference we continue to make in our community and would like to thank each and every person who has been part of helping to make sure Feathers Futures has had another successful year, and continues to be such a special place in the heart of Great Yarmouth.

Future plans
**----- End of picture text -----**
As we look ahead, our focus remains on sustainable, values-led growth. The past year has shown us just how vital our services are and how important it is that we remain adaptable, resilient, and embedded in the Great Yarmouth community; meeting the needs of the women within it. With demand continuing to rise in the face of economic hardship, we are more committed than ever to securing the future of Feathers Futures.

In the coming year, we will continue to diversify our income, building on our strategic plan to explore earned income opportunities, community fundraising, and partnerships alongside our grant funding. We know that relying predominantly on grants is not sustainable long-term, and so we are actively developing new ways for people to support us, from room hire and regular giving campaigns to corporate sponsorship and community-led initiatives.

We are also working towards completing our Investors in Volunteering accreditation, which will further strengthen our internal systems and governance, ensuring that volunteers, many of whom bring invaluable lived experience, are supported and empowered at every stage of their journey with us.

Internally, we remain focused on embedding a healthy, inclusive workplace culture as we grow. We are actively exploring what makes a positive workplace, how we retain great staff, and how we ensure that leadership at every level is aligned with our core values of respect, compassion, and collaboration. These values will continue to guide our decisions and shape our direction. Most importantly, we will continue to listen to the women in our community, ensuring Feathers Futures remains the charity they have helped to shape; a space that reflects their voice, their experiences, and their hopes for the future.

## **Reserves Policy**

The Trustees consider the level of reserves they wish to retain, appropriate to the Charity's needs and circumstances. This is based on the charity's size and level of commitments held. The Trustees endeavour not to set aside funds unnecessarily. The Trustees aim to ensure the charity will be able to continue to fulfil its charitable objectives even if there is a temporary shortfall in income or unexpected expenditure. In doing this the Trustee's aim to make sure that the current budget forecast and reserves levels allow the charity to continue in operation for a rolling six month period and we have met this aim.

The Trustees recognise that the charity is in a good financial position for the end of the year and financial projections for the next financial year is that agreed funding should enable us to deliver and develop to meet demand.

_I quickly realised that Feathers Futures was different..._

15

Dotty’s _Feathers Futures was different. The small groups and the_ Story _diverse range of ages made me feel comfortable._ This year has been one of pushing boundaries and growing in confidence for me. Without Feathers Futures, I wouldn’t have accomplished all I have done; and I certainly wouldn't be in the positive position I find myself in today.

I moved to Gorleston two and a half years ago, completely alone, without knowing anyone. In an attempt to connect, I joined a local Facebook group, but instead of finding friendships, I felt bullied by a number of people. This experience was devastating—it knocked my confidence down to almost nothing, and I felt utterly alone. With no one to turn to, my mental health took a severe hit.

Desperate for help, I went to see a doctor, and it was there that a mental health nurse recommended Feathers Futures to me. I remember emailing the Feathers Futures team, feeling incredibly anxious and nervous. Walking into that first drop-in session was one of the hardest things I’ve done for a while. I was still very upset and unsure of what to expect.

But I quickly realised that Feathers Futures was different. The small groups and the diverse range of ages made me feel comfortable. The volunteers were so welcoming, they made me feel assured and safe. I had a brief one-to-one with Jo, who helped me work through my trust issues. Over time, I began to rebuild that trust, and when I left the centre after that first session, I felt something I hadn’t felt in a long time: energised. I wasn’t alone anymore. I had found a safe space, a place where I could go for a cuppa and feel supported.

My connection with Feathers Futures grew from there. I visited again on International Women’s Day; what better place to celebrate such an occasion? I brought cupcakes to show my appreciation, a small gesture for the enormous impact they had on me.

A year later, I joined the "All About Me" course, which taught me how to cope better. Even though I still felt vulnerable and fragile, I began to understand that it was time to focus on myself. For too long, I had put myself to one side, always prioritising others over my own well-being.

16

Through Feathers Futures, I gained the confidence to get out there and learned how to assess my feelings. I reaffirmed the fact that it’s okay to experience both positive and negative emotions and that it’s normal to feel things—whether emotional or physical. They taught me that anyone can change, from positive to negative and vice versa. The key is knowing how to make those changes. I realised that I matter, that I am likeable. Feathers Futures taught me the importance of self-love, self-esteem, and self-confidence. They equipped me with tactics and tools that I use daily, empowering me to control and change my thoughts.

I also joined their art groups, which became another source of strength for me. If I could describe Feathers Futures in one word, it would be “supportive.” It’s a wonderful, inclusive place where women can reach out when they need help. Everyone there is lovely and welcoming, and no one is made to feel out of place. There are so many different women, each with their own stories and experiences, and I’ve learned that I, too, have knowledge to share.

I would tell other women not to be afraid to take that first step. Don’t worry, don’t be anxious, Feathers Futures supports you. They understand how it feels to be stressed and anxious, and they help you find hobbies or activities that can ease that stress. They have counsellors, women’s products, and a community where everyone talks to each other, so no one feels alone. I even participated in an art class and made a “Worry Box.” That experience alone boosted my confidence so much.

Before Feathers Futures, I felt like a waste of space, like I should just disappear. I was so low, but they helped me understand that there will always be bumps in the road. What matters is how we deal with them, and thanks to Feathers Futures, I now feel equipped to handle whatever life throws my way. They encouraged me to seek therapy, which was life-changing and helped me take steps that have completely redirected my life.

Feathers Futures was the catalyst for so many positive changes in my life, and now I’m using what I’ve learned to support others. Recently, I helped a lady who was at the seafront in tears, contemplating life. I shared with her three steps she could do to help her feel better and reassured her that help is available.

Without Feathers Futures, I wouldn’t be where I am today. They gave me the tools, the confidence, and the support I needed to not only change my own life but to help others change theirs too. Thank you!

_If I could describe Feathers Futures in one word, it would be “supportive.” It’s a wonderful, inclusive place where women can reach out when they need help._ 17
