## **FEATHERS FUTURES CIO REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 28 FEBRUARY 2023 CHAIR'S SUMMARY**

Feathers Futures works with women in Great Yarmouth, to build friendships, support each other and learn new skills, by providing a safe, non-judgmental space for women to listen, be heard, and understood.

2022 has seen the charity grow in strength and confidence delivering vital courses , groups, and peer support, that are much needed and welcomed by the women that accessed our services. Due to the growth of the charity, it was necessary to move to a premises that was fit for our needs and gave us space in the future to develop. The new building has been adapted to ensure that we are accessible to all Women that need to access our space and services.

The continued generosity of organisations that have considered our funding applications and supported the work that we do has meant that charity has continued to grow financially, enabling the brilliant work of the team to help and support the women of Great Yarmouth to feel safe, grow and thrive. Thank you to those individuals and funders that have given so generously, through many donations, we couldn’t offer the support we do without your help.

I’m proud of the team at Feathers Futures, their hard work and commitment to the charity, its objectives and mostly, to the women that need our support is unwavering and this shows in the outcomes and mostly in the feedback from the Women themselves.

Donna Baldwin Chair of Trustees

## **Achievement and Performance**

Feathers Futures third year as a charity has been another busy one ending with the move to our larger new premises Feathers House. The move was needed as we had outgrown our previous premises and it was limiting our ability to run sessions due to lack of space. We were lucky to be chosen by The Princes Trust Cohort at East Coast College as their community project which saw the team come and paint Feathers House for two weeks before we moved in which was great. The feedback from women coming to our new premises has been positive and there has been lots of willing help to get settled and make it into the welcoming safe space we want it to be. We continue to offer an open door to women over 18 as we listened to what women said were barriers to accessing support and have tired to remove these and provide an accessible service in the community alongside our professional referral routes.

At the beginning of the year we were successful in our application to the SESF and were able to recruit two part-time peer support workers for one year which has taken our staff team to seven. This enabled us respond to enquiries from 421 women, deliver groups and activities to 326 women, provide placements to 11 student counsellors who between them completed 926 hours of counselling as well as continue to run our very busy toiletries bank. We are actively seeking additional funding to be able to continue the peer support worker roles beyond the one year as we would have to reduce our delivery if we were not able to do this.

One of our key aims for the year was to develop our volunteer offer and see how we could ensure we had the infrastructure in place to be able to support and train volunteers with lived experience in a safe way. We are pleased to be part of the WREN project delivered by St Giles Trust that has helped us to put in place a lived experience framework, volunteer induction and training plan for volunteers. Eleven volunteers were able to complete City and Guilds Learning to Advise Level 3 course. We hope to be able to continue our partnership with St Giles after the WREN project has ended by becoming a peer host hub as we firmly believe that peer support is key in women supporting women.

As a small grassroots charity in the Great Yarmouth community we care about where we live and want to ensure that we are always looking at ways to include the voices and needs of the community, we are a charity run by women in the community for the community. Whilst we have always involved women in the design and delivery of activities we now have structured the way we do this so that we can hold ourselves to account along with reviewing how we measure our impact with Make an Impact CIC so we now have a clear impact measurement framework. Following this we are pleased to be able to report that 100% of women accessing courses and counselling reported an improvement in their well-being and 100% of women accessing courses and counselling felt valued and listened to at Feathers Futures.

## **FEATHERS FUTURES CIO REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 28 FEBRUARY 2023 CONTINUED**

## **Activities offered this year:**

Over the past three years we have seen the charity grow, we have listened to the needs of the women and organisations in our community and worked together to develop services that fill gaps in services and previously unmet needs. These services aim to reduce isolation and develop powerful peer support networks so women know they aren't alone, improve skills and ability to move forward in life, improve health and connect the community **.**

**Domestic Abuse Recovery Toolkit** - We continue to deliver this course written by Sue Penna from Rockpool Life CIC the nationally recognised course is for women who have experienced domestic abuse in the past and are no longer in the relationship. It looks at the impact the abuse can leave behind and ways to move forward, building a "toolkit" of helpful resources focusing on self-esteem and future well-being. We run both face to face and online evening sessions.

**1-1 counselling** - Counsellors volunteer with Feathers Futures and come for their placement while completing the BA Honours Person Centred Counselling degree with Suffolk University, based at East Coast College campus in Great Yarmouth. Each student has to complete 100 hours counselling in order to qualify and we have been very pleased to have been able to offer over 450 hours of counselling this year.

**Group counselling** - We run weekly group counselling sessions facilitated by fully a fully qualified counsellor, these sessions allow women to listen and support each other.

**Craft group and Crafternoon** - The groups run evenings as well as during the week and are always incredibly popular with a waiting list. We have two dedicated craft rooms in our new premises, one with sewing machines enabling us to expand our crafting offer.

**Drop-in/Coffee morning** - Friday coffee morning is still the busiest time of the week, anyone can pop in and find out more about what we do, collect any toiletries or sanitary products they need, have refreshments and a chat. Over the year we have had kindly donated clothes and shoes that has allowed us to offer free clothes and shoes to women in need.

**Exercise classes for beginners** - Following our successful 6 month pilot of exercise classes we were awarded funding from the Norfolk Community Foundation Love Norfolk Fund to run weekly Zumba classes for a year.

**Own My Life** - A 12-week online or in-person course to help women who have been subjected to abuse to regain ownership of their lives.

## **FEATHERS FUTURES CIO REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 28 FEBRUARY 2023 CONTINUED**

**Sole Sisters** - The walking group were joined by Under Open Sky throughout the year, delivering a series of walking sessions with the additional benefit of connecting with nature through art and mindfulness, ending with a celebratory exhibition at PrimeYarc.

**Feathers Friends** - Is a peer support network where women come together and support each other whilst making friends and reducing isolation.

**Outreach** - We continue to be at Shrublands community centre allowing us to have the space to reach women in Gorleston, we run a weekly session of Feathers Friends as well as taking to Gorleston It's All About Me! and Domestic Abuse Recovery Toolkit Courses. We have been out to other more rural parts of the borough after identifying places with limited transport into central Great Yarmouth and delivered one off outreach sessions.

**Monthly Book Club** - The Book club is led by keen volunteers with a passion for books and is a very popular group who have read a variety of different genres.

**Free toiletries, sanitary products and make-up** - Thanks to incredibly kind donations locally and via Toiletries Amnesty with their support we have been able to offer free products to anyone in need.

**Flourish** - Young mums group for aged 16-21, newly formed group aimed at reducing isolation and feelings of loneliness.

**Its All About Me!** - This 6 week confidence building, self-esteem and self-care course has proved to be very popular, with courses running in Great Yarmouth and Gorleston, daytime and evening it has a waiting list.

**Volunteering** - We have a volunteer programme that offers various opportunities within Feathers Futures, each volunteer has their own personal development plan that looks at training and development linked to their future goals.

**Peer Mentors** - Thanks to bespoke accredited training offered by Cohort4 in Peer Mentoring Women with Complex Needs alongside modules such as safeguarding, lone working and domestic abuse awareness we have been able to secure funding to train women who have been through our service to support women who are new to Feathers Futures.

## **FEATHERS FUTURES CIO FINANCIAL REVIEW FOR THE YEAR ENDED 28 FEBRUARY 2023 CONTINUED**

## **Reserves Policy**

The Trustees consider the level of reserves they wish to retain, appropriate to the Charity's needs and circumstances. This is based on the charity's size and level of commitments held. The Trustees endeavour not to set aside funds unnecessarily. The Trustees aim to ensure the charity will be able to continue to fulfil its charitable objectives even if there is a temporary shortfall in income or unexpected expenditure. In doing this the Trustee's aim to make sure that the current budget forecast and reserves levels allow the charity to continue in operation for a rolling six month period and we have met this aim.

The Trustees recognise that the charity is in a good financial position for the end of it's first year and financial projections for the next financial year is that agreed funding should enable us to deliver and develop to meet demand.

## **Future plans**

We will continue to run open door drop-ins as a way to access our services alongside self and professional referrals but recognise that we have must continue to offer individualised person centred support to each person who accesses our services and this can place additional pressure on the staff team. We will manage this demand vs capacity issue by monitoring new referrals and referral needs, being clear about our services and support offer, investing in recruiting and training volunteers and peer mentors and continuing to work closely with specialist services to signpost appropriately.

We know that as the cost of living crisis continues currently the demand on charities has increased in terms of needing to increase capacity alongside rising bills and staff costs. We are predominantly grant funded and will continue to apply for grants as appropriate but recognise that we need to diversify our income streams and develop different ways for people to support us.
