Chair
This is the second year of a three-year period of office as Chairman during which we have seen a period of stability and consolidation.
We have gained Alistair on to the committee as Secretary who has taken on some of the work that Carole did. This has enabled Carole to focus predominantly on the engagements.
Micah has now been in post for 18 months, during which we have seen a huge transformation within the band and Micah’s confidence grow. We gained three new registered players, in Lisa Pass on 2[nd] Baritone, John Whittaker on Solo Trombone and Clare Ashworth in the last 12 months. John’s arrival has enabled Mark to swap between solo and bass trombone as required. Having 4 trombones at a time when work and family commitments make attendance difficult is a real bonus to the band. Clare had to take a break from band due to personal reasons and plans to return after the easter holidays. I would like to pass on a vote of thanks to Geoff who played 2[nd] Baritone for about 12 months. A fantastic example to us all. I’d also like to give Mandy a vote of thanks, who helps on the backrow.
Recent contest results have shown that the appointment of Micah has significantly improved the standard of playing within the band and is not only showing cohesiveness in the band room, but outside of it too. I think that recent performances both at Bedworth and the town hall have demonstrated that we can perform to a high standard which is essential now that we have gained promotion to the 2[nd] section.
In terms of contesting, we need to set out how many we would like to take part in over the year. We clearly already have two more lined up, the Nationals in September and Wychavon on the 31[st] of October. The running of the band is no mean feat. Over the last 12 months, we have set up a group that deals with assisting Micah in selecting new music for us to play. Thanks to Kate, Dan, Steph, Lisa, Jim, Jenny, Josh, Mark and Phil for the work that they have done. We plan to create a programme in the next few weeks for Wychavon contest that we will perform over the summer months, so that we will just need to have some focused rehearsals in the last few weeks before the contest. My ambition is for us to put a programme together that will entertain, have a good balance of pieces that will give us sufficient marks to win some prizes. This is the last contest we will be doing in the third section, so we must endeavour to ensure that we have a programme that has a good chance of winning. Thank you to you all for all the dedication and hard work over the past 12 months. Our success as a band is a team effort and I’d like to give special thanks to the following:
Carole for the immense amount of work she has done as engagement secretary. Organising engagements and deps is probably the most demanding position within the committee. Having a full band, has certainly helped reduce the need to get in deps.
Tim for hosting and updating the website. It is here that I’m looking for someone with a bit of flair to assist Tim in revamping the website. Josh for the work in uploading videos onto YouTube which has helped raise the profile of the band and for the immense amount of work he did producing the video for Wychavon contest. I hope that we can keep the backdrops to this year’s performance a little simpler.
Steph for placing regular posts on Facebook again raising the profile of the band and also updating current vacancies.
Rachel for sorting out the library. The librarian’s role is another that takes up hours of work and is largely unappreciated.
Thanks to Phil and Chris for organising the recent concert and persuading the Evesham Live committee to let the concert to go ahead given the small number of advanced ticket sales. Selling them on the door was a great success.
Other members of the committee; Mark for being contest secretary, a busy job over the last 4 months and Andrew as treasurer.
Carole and Rob for staying behind at band and cleaning the kitchen and toilets. Rob also regularly nips down to the band room has given the floor a hoover. Many thanks to you both.
Finally, to Micah. There has been a real transformation in the atmosphere in the band room over the last 12 months continues. His enthusiasm for music and dedication to the band is second to none and it is a pleasure to be working with him. I certainly cannot think of any time in the decades that I have been playing, that has prepared me more for a contest. I look forward to continuing to work with Micah and for you to drive this band forward and gain some good results in 2[nd] section over the coming years.

2025/2026 was a very busy year for the band, 28 separate jobs.
FOUR CONTESTS SIX CONCERTS TWO PARK JOBS TWO PARADES THREE SMALL GROUP JOBS ELEVEN CAROL PLAYING EVENTS
It was disappointing that we had only 2 park jobs. Normally we get 2 afternoons in Evesham Abbey Park, but last years’ only 1 was allocated for some reason. We did not get allocated Redditch or Malvern Parks. Councils are cutting back on expenditure and are using smaller groups (Jazz Bands or small ensembles) to play in parks. It is this time of year when we will be applying for all parks for 2026, watch this space.

Musical Director
Last year, I spoke to you all about the progress that you had made over the past year since I had become musical director of The Avonbank (Evesham) Brass Band, I spoke about vacancies being reduced and attendance in rehearsals being increased
The past year has held many highlights with the band’s first attendance at The National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain 2025 since 1990 and a performance of a brand new programme of music at the Wychavon Festival of Brass which was specially commissioned a premiered by The Avonbank (Evesham) Brass Band as well as a very successful Christmas period.
We have a full band and no outstanding vacancies, I am interested in advertising for a new Eb Bass player but this is something that is being actively explored. It must be mentioned that over the past number of weeks the band has been approached by three separate people asking if they can join the band. The band is gaining a reputation both on and off the contest front and you are all establishing a firm reputation as a band that is going places. We will continue to consolidate our position and continue to tighten up all those little corners to ensure we are consistent.
We have seen just one member leave the band and that was my father Geoff Parsons who covered the 2nd Baritone seat before the appointment
of Lisa Pass. We have also welcomed John on principal trombone and had a juggle around in the Trombone section to support busy work and life commitments without losing anyone from the band which has resulted in a very strong and consistent Trombone section.
Due to the reputation that the band is getting we are being given lots of new opportunities which has resulted in the band having a busy schedule of concert programmes, although it may seem difficult to juggle all these commitments it is a good position to be in and has put the band in a really strong position moving forward. It should be noted that some many bands in the local area seem to be struggling to gain new opportunities for concerts and that it is a privilege that we always have something to work towards.
You may have noticed that as the standard has increased that the smaller little things have become more noticeable and this is absolutely natural, as a band becomes tighter, as we play with our unique sound, as well play more accurately together and in tune when the odd little things happens it stands out more and we always have to remind ourselves that mistakes are natural and that by being on that journey that there will be rocky moments but we will always navigate those as a team. The journey to success is never a straight road and you guys have been absolutely giving this journey 110 percent!!
We have really developed our team spirit and I really feel that we are unified and supported and dare I say it like an extended family.
The early months of 2026 have been marked by success with a first prize result at The Oxfordshire Brass Band Association Winter Contest and a third prize at The Midlands Regional Brass Band Championships which has led to the band being invited to attend The National Championships of Great Britain in 2026, which is the first time in the bands history that we have been invited in back to back years, this year has also seen us achieve our overall long term musical goal of gaining promotion back to The Second Section. This is a huge achievement especially considering where we were in regard to our situation in 2024 and how quickly we have regained our position in The Second Section. We have recently given a very successful concert which I believe has firmly put The Avonbank (Evesham) Band back on the map.
Looking at the rest of the year, we have a busy year ahead of us, we have an exciting concert for St George’s Day, a gig with a rock choir, Whit Friday, our summer bandstand gigs, Wychavon, a remembrance gig in November as well as our normal Christmas Commitments.
The standard of the band has come on immensely, I have had so many comments that relate to the sound of the band, the tightness of the band and how professional the band look when on stage. When I look at the programme, we played at our first gig together to where we are now it is
an absolute world apart. The programmes we are now working on are more difficult both in technical standards but also in regards to stamina, you are fully capable of putting these programmes together and you will have seen the impact that they have on the audience with our programmes providing a variety of music that excites, engages and takes our audience members on a musical journey.
For me the longer-term musical goal needs to now focus on maintaining our position in The Second Section and progressing towards the top end of The Second Section as well as continuing with our existing musical goals of developing our concert programmes and relationships. The main differences between The Second Section and The Third Section is the technical difficulty of the music but the reality for me is that the band is better prepared for The Second Section and has a very good opportunity at doing well.
To split down this longer-term goal there will be an increased focus on increasing our own individual technical ability and I will be focusing a lot on the accuracy of tonguing, being accurate and rhythmic through technical passages and being 100% prepared for whatever we will face in The Second Section. I firmly believe having listened a lot of bands over the course of these past few months that we have the makings of a very good second section band.
I finished last year’s report with saying that “a busy band is a happy band” and I continue to stand by this statement. I would like to finish by thank you all for your help and support trust that you place in me and for your unrelenting commitment to striving for the best.

Accounts were distributed during the meeting and the treasurer made the following comments:
A very positive year compared to previous years, a surplus of £667.
Finished end of 2025 with £11397 in bank accounts, plus £10k in savings account.
