AVCA report for the year ending 31[st] March 2024
The tenth Allen Valleys Folk Festival was held in September 2023. This was a brilliant success and firmly placed the event in forefront of the North East’s musical calendar.
The year saw a huge increase in our social media presence with much engagement on Facebook, X (Twitter) and Instagram. This raised our profile and brought in a new audience.
The festival had a very strong lineup celebrating music, dance and heritage and featured some of the best live folk music acts from Scotland, London, Liverpool, Bristol, Belfast and Eastern Europe who performed alongside those from Tyneside, Wearside and Northumberland. Festivalgoers enjoyed a diverse range of free workshops, from early-morning yoga to sea shanties, clog dancing to creative writing. The annual burning of a wooden sculpture representing the legendary Allendale Wolf drew a huge crowd in the village square.
Ticket sales showed a 65% increase on the previous year. This was attributed to a combination of our strong social media presence and the popular lineup. Sponsorship from local companies was greatly appreciated. The collaboration with the Village Hall and the parish church worked very well and gave us ideal venues with catering and bar facilities. We were proud to be able to engage with local businesses who provided many services. As always, we were very grateful to the small army of volunteers who help make the event run smoothly.
In addition to the festival, we staged our annual New Year’s Eve Ceilidh which, once again, saw the hall at full capacity. Dancers enjoyed a fabulous evening before spilling out into the square to celebrate the New Year with the spectacular Tar Bar’ls event.
In November we promoted a performance of an up-and-coming local artist who had appeared at the festival, giving her the opportunity to play to a wider audience.
This was a very successful year for us. We were able to bring high quality performances to the isolated rural community of Allendale from both established artists and emerging talent. Our community involvement increased with an ever growing range of free activities for people to engage with.

Independent Examiner’s Report to the Trustees of Allen Valleys Community Arts - CIO No 1173463 on the Accounts for the[period] ended 31 March 2024
Respective Responsibilities of the Trustees and Independent Examiner
The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity's trustees consider that an audit is not required for this period under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 ("the Charities Act") and that an independent examination is needed.
It is my responsibility
- to examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charities Act; • to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5)(b) of the Charities Act, and; • to state whether particular matters have come to my attention. of Independent Examiner’s Statement
Basis
My examination was carried out in accordance with general Directions given by the Charity Commission.
An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a 'true and fair' view. Independent Examiner's Statement
In connection with my examination, no matters have come to my attention which gives me cause to believe that in any material respect: - the accounting records were not kept in accordance with s.130 of the Charities Act; or • the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or • the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a 'true and fair' view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination. I have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
