AVCA report year ending March 2023
This was the first year that Allen Valleys Folk Festival was organised by Allen Valleys Community Arts. Previously it had been administered by Allen Valleys Promotions Ltd (now dissolved). The transfer was made in order to attain charitable status.
Covid had prevented the running of a folk festival in 2020 and 2021 although we did secure Heritage Lottery Funding for live online streaming and a short film in 2021.
We started planning the three day 2022 folk festival early in the year, persuading all artists to ‘roll over’ contracts first negotiated two years earlier. The ticketed events brought a varied and diverse range of acts to the Dale and the performances were enjoyed by attendees from both the local area and further afield. We staged a variety of free events in the village which helped enhance a sense of community and expanded cultural horizons. There were performances in local pubs, dance displays and workshops. The bonfire and burning of “The Allendale Wolf” in the square was a tremendous spectacle which was very well attended. We would like to thank the “Wolf Team” for the creation of this feature which has now become a festival highlight. Many local businesses sponsored the event, and we are grateful to them.
The death of the Queen on September 8[th] meant that the festival avoided the two-week mourning period, but the mood of the nation may have had a negative impact on ticket sales, which were down 12% on 2019. Financially, the festival made a loss of £1,495 but this was more than compensated by a profit of £2,043 from the New Year’s Eve Ceilidh.
During the year Peter Aldcroft, one of the festival’s founders, began to hand over administrative duties to Craig Atkinson, who took over organisational responsibility for the 2023 folk festival.
