Suicide Prevention UK Trustees’ Report - introduction For the Year Ended 29 February 2024

As the year comes to a close, we reflect on the significant progress and challenges that have shaped our journey at Suicide Prevention UK. Our mission to reduce suicide rates and provide compassionate support to those in crisis has driven every initiative, partnership, and campaign we have undertaken. This report outlines our achievements, financial performance, governance, and future aspirations.

The Devastating Impact of Suicide

Every year, suicide claims the lives of over 700,000 individuals worldwide. In the UK alone, around 6,000 lives are lost to suicide annually, making it one of the leading causes of death among people aged 15-49. For every life lost, an estimated 135 people are profoundly affected—family members, friends, colleagues, and communities left grappling with grief, confusion, and often unanswered questions.

Suicide: A Ripple Effect

The impact of suicide extends far beyond the individual. Families often face overwhelming emotional and financial burdens, communities lose valuable members, and workplaces experience diminished morale and productivity. Suicide costs the UK economy billions each year, highlighting the urgent need for preventative measures and support systems.

Who is Affected?

While suicide can affect anyone, certain groups face heightened risks, including:

Warning Signs and Prevention

Recognising warning signs can save lives. Common indicators include:

Preventative measures include fostering open conversations, reducing access to means, providing timely mental health care, and creating a supportive environment. Organisations like Suicide Prevention UK play a critical role in these efforts.

Suicide Prevention UK Trustees’ Report For the Year Ended 29 February 2024

The Trustees’ present their report and accounts for the period ended 29 February 2024. The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with the accounting policies set out in note 1 to the financial statements, comply with the Charity’s governing document, applicable law and the requirement of the Statement of Recommended Practice, “Accounting and Reporting by Charities” (SORP FRS 102) (implemented 1 January 2019).

Structure, governance and management

Suicide Prevention UK is a Charitable Incorporated Organisation registered in England and Wales, number 1187866, registered on 11 February 2020. Our main office is located in Bristol and we also have new address in Cardiff.

New trustees are appointed by existing Trustees and there must be a minimum of three.

The Trustees hold regular meetings to discuss the strategy and operations of the charity. Due to the straightforward nature of the charity, and the small number of Trustees, no sub-committees are necessary.

The Trustees who served during the year and since the year end were:

T Easter (appointed 18 August 2024) M Everett (resigned September 2024) M Harris (resigned February 2024) J Hayward (appointed 25 January 2024) P Houghton

All trustees serve on a voluntary basis. Trustees are appointed through a transparent process, ensuring diversity and alignment with our mission. New trustees undergo a thorough induction programme to understand our operations, policies, and objectives.

Organisational Structure

Our organisational structure supports efficient decision-making. Strategic decisions are made by the trustees, while operational responsibilities are delegated to designated teams.

Policies for setting pay and remuneration for key personnel adhere to sector benchmarks, ensuring fairness and alignment with our charitable objectives.

Our Mission and Vision

At Suicide Prevention UK, our vision is a world where no one feels alone in their darkest moments. We aim to achieve this through active interventions, support services, public awareness campaigns, and collaborative partnerships with local communities, emergency services, and other stakeholders. Our efforts are focused on saving lives and fostering a culture of understanding, compassion, and hope.

Objectives and Activities

Our core objective is to prevent suicide and support those affected. This year, our key activities included:

Achievements and Performance

Our achievements in 2024 include:

1. Expanded Patrol Operations

We extended our patrols to new high-risk areas. Our patrol teams, equipped with BroadNet PoC radios, have been instrumental in identifying and assisting individuals in crisis.

2. Partnerships and Collaborations

We strengthened our partnerships with local authorities, emergency services, and mental health organisations. Notable collaborations include:

3. National Suicide Prevention Helpline UK

Our helpline, accessible at 0800 587 0800, has continued to provide critical support. Although not a 24-hour service, we have increased availability during peak times and enhanced training for our volunteers to offer empathetic and effective assistance. We have also recently improved this number to be more memorable. It was previously 0800 689 5652 however we feel this new number is a lot easier to remember in a crisis.

4. Public Awareness Campaigns

We launched impactful campaigns to destigmatise mental health issues and encourage people to seek help. The “Buy a Stranger a Drink” initiative gained traction, fostering a sense of community and kindness while raising funds for our cause.

5. Fundraising Milestones

We have now teamed up with Unity Lotteries. This allows players to donate 50% of their lottery entry fee to us.

6. Technological Advancements

Transitioning from the ICOM system to BroadNet radios has significantly improved our communication capabilities during patrols, enabling quicker and more coordinated responses.

Challenges and lessons learned

While we have made substantial progress, we faced challenges including:

These experiences have underscored the importance of adaptive strategies and resilient teams.

Financial Review

Financial sustainability is crucial to our mission. This year, we:

During the year the charity generated income of £378,244, of which £102,080 was restricted (2023 - £252,434, all unrestricted), and incurred expenditure of £283,109, of which £59,080 was restricted (2023 - £244,368, all unrestricted). After transfers for purchase of capital items, the surplus generated was £95,135, all unrestricted (2023 - £8,066, all unrestricted).

Reserves Policy

Reserves at the end of the year were £205,054, all unrestricted (2023 – £109,919 all unrestricted). During the year there was an investment in a new vehicle, funded by restricted funding, and therefore cash held at the year end was £106,631 (2023 - £42,880).

Free reserves, excluding fixed assets, at the year end were £86,686 (2023 - £41,352).

Our reserves policy ensures financial stability and readiness for unforeseen challenges. This year, reserves amounted to over £30,000 meeting the required threshold to sustain operations. We are however looking to increase this.

Plans for future periods

Looking ahead, we aim to:

None of this would be possible without the dedication of our volunteers, the generosity of our donors, and the trust of the individuals we serve. To everyone who has supported us—thank you for being part of our journey to make a meaningful difference.

As we close another year, we remain committed to our mission. With the continued support of our stakeholders, we look forward to saving more lives, breaking stigmas, and building a future where no one feels alone in their struggles.

Suicide Prevention UK Independent Examiner’s Report For the Year Ended 29 February 2024

Independent examiner’s report to the Trustees of Suicide Prevention UK

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts for Suicide Prevention UK (“the charity”) for the year ended 29 February 2024.

Responsibilities and basis of report

As the charity trustees of the charity you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the 2011 Act”).

I report in respect of my examination of the charity’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act.

Independent examiner’s statement

Since the charity’s gross income exceeded £250,000 your examiner must be a member of a body listed in section 145 of the 2011 Act. I confirm that I am qualified to undertake the examination because I am a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, which is one of the listed bodies.

I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination giving me cause to believe that in any material respect:

  1. accounting records were not kept in respect of the charity as required by section 130 of the 2011 Act; or

  2. the accounts do not comply with these records; or

  3. the accounts do not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of the accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a “true and fair view” which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

1 Accounting Policies

1.1 General information and basis of accounting

Suicide Prevention UK is a charity, registered in England and Wales. The nature of the charity’s operations and its principal activities are set out in the Trustees report on pages 3-7.

The financial statements have been prepared in accordance with Accounting and reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019)- (Charities SORP (FRS 102)).

The charity meets the definition of public benefit entity under FRS 102. Assets and liabilities are initially recognised at historical cost or transaction value unless otherwise stated in the relevant accounting policy.

1.2 Income

All income is included in the Statement of Financial Activities when the charity is entitled to the income and the amount can be quantified with reasonable accuracy. The following specific policies are applied to particular categories of income:

1.3

Expenditure

Expenditure is recognised once there is a legal or constructive obligation to transfer economic benefit to a third party, it is probable that a transfer of economic benefits will be required in settlement, and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably.

Expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis and has been classified under headings that aggregate all costs related to that activity. Expenditure includes attributable VAT which cannot be recovered.

Where costs cannot be directly attributed, they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of the resource.

Page 11

Suicide Prevention UK Notes to the Financial Statements For the Year Ended 29 February 2024

1 Accounting policies (continued)

1.4 Fixed assets

Fixed assets are valued at cost less depreciation.

Depreciation is calculated to write off the cost or valuation of fixed assets over their estimated useful lives at the following rate: -

Plant and machinery – 20% reducing balance Fixtures and fittings – 15% reducing balance Motor vehicles – 25% reducing balance

1.5 Debtors

Trade and other debtors are recognised at the settlement amount due, and prepayments are valued at the amount prepaid.

1.6

Cash at bank and in hand

Cash at bank and in hand comprise cash on hand and call deposits, and other short-term highly liquid investments that are readily convertible to a known amount of cash and are subject to an insignificant risk of change in value.

1.7

Creditors

Creditors and provisions are recognised where the charity has a present obligation resulting from a past event that will probably result in the transfer of funds to a third party and the amount due to settle the obligation can be measured or estimated reliably. Creditors and provisions are recognised at their settlement amount.

1.8 Taxation

The company is a registered charity and is therefore not liable to corporation tax on its charitable activities to the extent that income and gains are applied to charitable purposes.

The Charity is not VAT registered and therefore all costs are inclusive of VAT.

1.9 Fund accounting

General funds are unrestricted funds receivable or generated for the objects of the company without further specified purpose and are available as general funds.

Restricted funds are to be used for specific purposes as laid down by the donor. Expenditure which meets this criterion is charged to the fund, together with a fair allocation of management and support costs.

1.10 Financial Instruments

liabilities of the charity and their measurement basis are as follows:

Financial assets- trade and other debtors are basic financial instruments and are debt instruments measured at amortised cost. Prepayments are not financial instruments.

Cash at bank and in hand- is classified as a basic financial instrument and is measured at face value.

Financial liabilities- trade creditors, accruals, and other creditors are financial instruments and are measured at amortised cost. Taxation and social security are not included in the financial instruments disclosure definition.
