## **THE YORK ORATORY TRUST (CIO)**

## **Registered Charity No 1187865**

## **Report of the trustees for the year ended 31st December 2021**

The accounting year of the York Oratory Trust (CIO) [YOT] runs from 1st January to 31st December. This report covers the first full year of the Trust’s existence. The Trustees for the period concerned were:

V. Rev. Richard Duffield (Provost) Fr Daniel Seward (Deputy) Fr Stephen Brown (Deputy) Fr Henry O’Connell Br David Chadwick

## **Structure, Governance and Management**

The Trustees are chosen by election from among the members of the York Oratory, a Roman Catholic Religious Community serving the needs of the Catholic Church in the Diocese of Middlesbrough whose territory covers the area defined by the objectives of the YOT described below.

The day to day management of the YOT is entrusted to the Provost and his two deputies and, for bigger decisions and in any case once a month, plenary meetings of all the trustees. This corresponds to the management structure of the Congregation of the Oratory as defined by its own particular law.

Each Oratorian community is autonomous but is part of a world-wide confederation. Every community elects delegates who meet regularly to review particular law, to conduct visitations and provide support for individual communities and their members.

## **Risk Management**

The trustees receive a monthly financial report including the Trust’s income and expenditure, an account of restricted funds, invested funds, cash in hand, assets and liabilities. The trustees are satisfied that there is sufficient regular income to allow the YOT to fulfil its objectives.

## **Financial Review**

The YOT’s main expenses are the maintenance of our property; the support of the clergy who, together with volunteers, undertake most of the work for the YOT’s objectives; and the training of new clergy to do this work in the future. The income comes from the donations of those who come to our churches, some rental income, and grants from charities which support the training of clergy.

## **Objectives**

The public advancement of the Roman Catholic Religion in England and especially in, or in the vicinity of, the City of York and the County of North Yorkshire.

## **Achievements and Performance**

Each community works closely with the Diocese in which it operates and is usually dependent on the Diocese for a proportion of the work it undertakes to meet its objectives. The YOT operates in the Diocese of Middlesbrough. The YOT runs two parishes for the Diocese and the Shrine of St Margaret Clitherow, a historic property and chapel in the Shambles. We have kept two listed buildings regularly open to the public except when Covid restrictions have prevented this. We also provide Catholic chaplaincy in schools, hospitals, care homes and for the students of the University of York. We provide governors for two Catholic schools.

## **Volunteers**

We recruit and train volunteers to help us meet different demands of our charitable objectives including administration, pastoral support, education and the maintenance of the church buildings and their contents. We have three choirs and have musicians both volunteer and salaried who support the worship in our churches.

Further details of the YOT’s work can be found on our website www.yorkoratory.com

## **THE YORK ORATORY TRUST (CIO)**

## **Registered Charity No 1187865**

## **Report of the Independent Examiner to the Trustees for the period ended 31 December 2021**

I report on the accounts of the York Oratory Trust (CIO) for the year ended 31 December 2021 which are set out on pages 6 to 7.

## **Respective responsibilities of the Trustees and Examiner:**

As Trustees you are responsible for preparing the Accounts. You consider that the audit requirement of section 144 of the Charities Act 2011(the Charities Act) does not apply and that an Independent Examination is needed.

It is my responsibility to examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charites Act and to state, on the basis of procedures specified in the General Directions given by the Charity Commissioners under section 145(5)(b) of the Charities Act, whether particular matters have come to my attention.

## **Basis of Independent Examiner’s report:**

My examination was carried out in accordance with the General Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts and seeking explanations from you as Trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a 'true and fair view' and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

## **Independent Examiner’s Statement:**

In connection with my examination, no material matters have come to my attention which gives me cause to believe that in any material respect:

accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or

the accounts do not accord with the accounting records

I have come across no other matter in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
